Yes—ZimaOS 1.8.0 can replace the core Google Photos workflow for a home NAS. Its native ZimaOS Photos library combines phone backup with a chronological timeline, map views, smart search, albums, Favorites, Recently Viewed and Memories, while keeping the files on storage you control.

It is not a zero-maintenance cloud replica: you supply the hardware, disks, redundancy and backup plan. But the October 15, 2026 release from IceWhale removes the need to install a separate photo application just to browse and back up a local library.

What ZimaOS 1.8 adds

ZimaOS 1.8.0 introduces Photos as a native part of the NAS operating system. The release is designed around one library rather than a folder tree, so photos from configured sources appear in a unified chronological timeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Timeline: browse the collection by capture date.
  • Map view: rediscover images through location data when that metadata exists.
  • Smart search: find images using the library’s search tools.
  • Albums: organize selected photos into named collections.
  • Favorites and Recently Viewed: provide quick access to frequently revisited images.
  • Memories: surface older content for rediscovery.

The important change is integration. ZimaOS Photos is delivered as part of ZimaOS rather than as a separate photo server that you must deploy, update and connect to the NAS yourself.

Can it replace Google Photos?

For local storage, browsing and automatic phone backup, it can cover the main use case. Zima Client can back up photos already on a phone and automatically upload new shots to a ZimaOS device. Your library then remains on your NAS instead of depending on a hosted photo account.

The trade-off is responsibility. A cloud service normally abstracts away disks, operating-system updates and hardware failures. With ZimaOS, you must provide usable storage, select a redundancy scheme, keep the system updated and maintain an independent backup. RAID helps a NAS stay available when a drive fails; it does not create a second copy outside the NAS.

How to set up private phone photo backup

The exact button names can change between Zima Client releases, but the deployment sequence is straightforward:

  1. Install ZimaOS 1.8.0. Use a supported Zima device or a compatible generic x86-64 computer with UEFI.
  2. Create a local account. ZimaOS documents accounts that do not require an email address, phone number or platform login.
  3. Prepare the photo storage. Add the drives and create the storage arrangement appropriate for your library before importing a large collection.
  4. Install and pair Zima Client. Connect the mobile client to the ZimaOS device on your network or through the supported remote connection method.
  5. Enable photo backup. Turn on the client’s automatic backup option, include existing photos for the initial upload, and allow new camera shots to upload automatically.
  6. Verify the result. Open Photos on ZimaOS and confirm that recent images appear in the timeline before deleting anything from the phone.

Keep the originals on the phone until the first upload is complete and you have checked several dates, videos and location-tagged images. A backup that has not been verified is not a safe deletion target.

Privacy and access model

ZimaOS positions the feature as a self-hosted alternative because the library can stay on your own device. Local accounts avoid mandatory contact details, and ZimaOS states that peer-to-peer connections are encrypted and travel directly between devices without passing through a server or cloud.

That model reduces dependence on a hosted photo provider, but it does not eliminate network security work. Use strong account credentials, keep ZimaOS and Zima Client current, and expose remote access only through the connection method you understand and can secure.

Hardware and storage requirements

ZimaOS is derived from CasaOS. The official project documentation lists OTA and offline updates and support for ZimaBoard, ZimaBoard2, ZimaBlade, ZimaCube and generic x86-64 systems using UEFI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most direct pairing is ZimaCube 2. TechRadar reported a $799 starting price in 2026, with a 256GB NVMe SSD pre-installed for ZimaOS, six SATA bays for 3.5- or 2.5-inch drives, and four M.2 slots. Its documented storage modes include JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID 10.

For a photo-heavy library, plan capacity from the size of the original files, video growth and the usable capacity lost to redundancy. NAS-rated 3.5-inch SATA drives are the practical choice for the six-bay chassis. ZimaOS documentation specifically describes RAID 1, 5 and 6 options; the best choice depends on drive count, replacement time and how much usable capacity you need.

ZimaOS Photos versus Immich

Immich remains a credible alternative for people who want a dedicated self-hosted photo application. ZimaOS itself presents Immich as a personal Google Photos option, and Immich supports self-hosted photo and video backup with automatic upload, facial recognition and map views.

Decision point ZimaOS Photos Immich
Installation model Native feature in ZimaOS 1.8; no separate photo server is required. Separate self-hosted photo application that must be deployed and maintained.
Mobile backup Zima Client backs up existing photos and new shots to a ZimaOS device. Supports self-hosted photo and video backup with automatic upload.
Discovery Timeline, map, smart search, albums, Favorites, Recently Viewed and Memories. Facial recognition and map views are documented; the exact feature set depends on the Immich version and deployment.
Privacy Local accounts are available without email, phone number or platform login; encrypted peer-to-peer connections are designed to go directly between devices. Self-hosted storage keeps the library under your control, with privacy depending on your own server and network configuration.
Hardware Zima hardware or compatible generic x86-64 UEFI systems. Runs wherever the application’s server requirements can be satisfied.

Treating RAID as backup

RAID can preserve availability after a disk failure, but accidental deletion, malware, theft or a failed enclosure can affect the whole array. Keep an independent copy on separate storage or at another location.

Running out of usable capacity

Redundancy reduces the space available for photos. Include future video and multiple phone users in the estimate instead of sizing only for today’s image count.

Installing on the wrong disk

The installer wipes its selected target. Disconnect or clearly identify disks that contain irreplaceable data, and make a separate backup before installation.

Assuming every feature is identical to a cloud service

ZimaOS Photos supplies the familiar organization model, but cloud-provider features, account recovery, sharing behavior and remote availability may differ. Confirm the functions your household actually uses before retiring another service.

Who should choose ZimaOS Photos?

  • Choose it if you already want a ZimaOS NAS, prefer local accounts and storage, and value an integrated backup-and-library workflow.
  • Consider Immich instead if you want a dedicated photo application and are comfortable installing and maintaining it separately.
  • Keep a cloud copy as well if off-site disaster recovery matters and you do not yet have another independent backup location.

ZimaOS 1.8 makes a NAS-based photo library much closer to the everyday Google Photos experience: install the operating system, connect storage, enable Zima Client backup and use the native timeline, maps and search to retrieve the collection. The privacy benefit is real, but it comes with the ongoing duties of a NAS owner—capacity planning, updates, redundancy and tested backups.
