There is no protocol-wide winner. A Zigbee door sensor is usually the better fit when you already have a compatible hub and want dependable local automations. A direct Wi‑Fi sensor can simplify the radio path to your router, but its alerts may depend on a cloud service. Some “Wi‑Fi alarm systems” use Wi‑Fi only between their hub and router while their sensors use a separate proprietary radio. Choose by the complete sensor-to-hub-to-alarm path, outage behavior, compatibility and notification requirements—not by the Wi‑Fi or Zigbee label alone.

What a door sensor actually does

A contact sensor detects whether a door or window is open or closed. It normally consists of a battery-powered sensor and a magnet mounted on the moving and fixed parts of the frame. Opening the door separates them, changing the sensor state. The sensor can then trigger a siren, scene, push notification or other automation through the system that receives the event.

The sensor itself is not a professionally monitored alarm service. Police, fire or guard dispatch requires a separate monitoring arrangement. A smart-home contact sensor can provide useful local warnings and phone alerts, but those outcomes depend on the hub, software, network and notification route.

How Zigbee and Wi‑Fi architectures differ

Zigbee: sensor to hub, then to the rest of the home

A Zigbee contact sensor communicates over the low-power Zigbee mesh to a compatible hub or coordinator. The hub may run automations locally, connect the system to the internet, or do both. Battery-powered Zigbee devices normally rely on mains-powered Zigbee devices or the hub to extend the mesh; they do not connect directly to an ordinary Wi‑Fi access point.

Compatibility is model-specific. The Aqara Door and Window Sensor requires an Aqara hub sold separately, and Aqara states on its US product page that the sensor is not compatible with hubs from other brands. The SONOFF SNZB-04P also requires a Zigbee hub; its manufacturer lists compatible SONOFF controllers and the second-generation Echo Plus as examples. A generic Zigbee logo does not guarantee that two products will pair or expose all features to one another.

Direct Wi‑Fi: sensor to router, often through a cloud

A direct Wi‑Fi sensor joins the home router like another network device. In the Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth LE design documented by Tuya, a door event travels from the sensor to the router, is reported to a cloud platform and then becomes a phone alert. The platform documentation lists door state, battery level, tamper and offline alerts, automations and over-the-air updates. This describes a platform design rather than confirming a particular retail model or its local-fallback behavior. See the Tuya developer documentation (updated June 20, 2024) and its door/window sensor solution page.

Wi‑Fi-connected alarm systems may use another radio for sensors

The radio label on an alarm system can be misleading. In the cited Arlo Home Security System, the Keypad Sensor Hub connects to 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, but the All-in-One Sensor communicates with that hub over Arlo’s SecureLink protocol. The sensor is therefore not a direct Wi‑Fi contact sensor. It requires the specified hub, which then provides the system’s network connection.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision axis Zigbee examples Wi‑Fi or Wi‑Fi-connected examples What to verify
Sensor-to-network path Sensor uses Zigbee and reaches a compatible hub or coordinator. Tuya’s documented design sends the event through the router to the cloud. Arlo’s sensor uses SecureLink to a Wi‑Fi-connected hub. Trace every link instead of assuming the product name describes the sensor radio.
Hub requirement Aqara and SONOFF examples require hubs, with different compatibility lists. Tuya’s platform design describes a Wi‑Fi sensor without a separate Zigbee hub; Arlo sensors require the Arlo Keypad Sensor Hub. Confirm the exact hub, app and account requirements before purchase.
Local response during a Wi‑Fi interruption SONOFF documents local Zigbee scenes continuing while Wi‑Fi is disconnected, provided the Zigbee devices remain powered. Tuya’s described phone-alert path passes through the router and cloud. Arlo advertises cellular and battery backup for the complete system. Ask separately whether a local siren works and whether a remote phone alert can still arrive.
Battery claim Aqara: over two years under normal usage; SONOFF: five years claimed. Arlo SecureLink All-in-One Sensor: one year listed. These are manufacturer claims for different products, not a controlled protocol test.
Ecosystem fit Aqara’s sensor is hub-specific; SONOFF publishes a list of compatible controllers. Arlo’s sensor is tied to its own hub; Tuya’s material is platform documentation rather than a specific consumer model. Use a device confirmed for your existing alarm or smart-home platform.

What happens when Wi‑Fi, internet or power fails?

“The Wi‑Fi is down” can mean three different failures: the wireless link between a device and router, the local network while the router still has power, or the internet connection beyond the router. A fourth failure is loss of mains power. They affect local automations and remote notifications differently.

Local sirens and scenes

A local action is executed inside the home, such as a hub sounding a siren or a Zigbee device turning on a light. SONOFF says local scenes between powered Zigbee devices can continue when Wi‑Fi is disconnected. That is a manufacturer-described capability for the SNZB-04P ecosystem, not a guarantee for every Zigbee hub or scene.

Aqara describes an alarm mode in which its hub sounds an alarm and sends a phone notification when the sensor detects an opening. The page does not establish that the phone notification will work without internet access, so treat the hub’s local alarm and the remote alert as separate functions.

Remote phone notifications

A phone alert normally needs a path from the home to a vendor service and then to your phone. In Tuya’s documented Wi‑Fi design, the event goes through the router and cloud before reaching the phone. An internet outage can therefore interrupt that route even if the sensor can still see the door state locally. Check whether the exact product stores events, retries them or offers a local notification alternative; do not infer those features from the radio type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cellular and battery backup

Arlo lists cellular and battery backup for its Home Security System when power or Wi‑Fi is down, along with a built-in hub siren. The available backup duration depends on settings, usage and environment. This resilience belongs to the complete alarm system, not to the SecureLink sensor alone.

Battery life: useful numbers, limited conclusions

Battery life depends on the sensor’s radio, reporting interval, signal quality, temperature, tamper events, firmware and battery chemistry. A door opened dozens of times a day can produce a different result from a rarely used storage-room door. Hub behavior and mesh quality also affect how often a battery device retransmits.

Product Battery and stated life How to interpret it
Aqara Door and Window Sensor CR2450; over two years under normal usage, according to Aqara’s US listing. A product claim; the page does not define a controlled test protocol or a calendar year for the claim.
SONOFF SNZB-04P CR2477; five years claimed by SONOFF/ITEAD. A manufacturer estimate for this model, not evidence that Zigbee universally outlasts Wi‑Fi.
Arlo SecureLink All-in-One Sensor One year listed by Arlo. A model-specific figure for a proprietary-radio sensor in Arlo’s alarm system.

No independent, directly comparable study establishes a universal Zigbee-versus-Wi‑Fi battery advantage. Treat the figures as planning estimates, keep a replacement battery available and follow the model’s specified battery type. Do not substitute a CR2450 and CR2477 merely because both are coin cells; their physical size and capacity differ.

Compatibility is the first buying decision

When an existing hub determines the answer

If you already operate an Aqara hub, the Aqara sensor is the straightforward ecosystem choice because the manufacturer specifies that hub requirement and excludes hubs from other brands. If you use a SONOFF controller or a compatible second-generation Echo Plus, the SNZB-04P’s published list gives you a starting point, but you should still verify the exact firmware and feature support in your app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an alarm system, use the manufacturer’s approved sensor family unless the documentation explicitly supports third-party pairing. Pairing a device at the radio level does not ensure that alarm modes, tamper events, battery reporting or automations will appear in the software.

When you are starting from scratch

Compare the price and complexity of the complete system: sensor, hub if required, siren, batteries, app account and any subscription or cellular service. A direct Wi‑Fi design may avoid a separate Zigbee coordinator, but it can add dependence on a cloud account and the router’s coverage. A Zigbee design adds a coordinator but can reduce the number of Wi‑Fi devices competing for airtime and may support local scenes.

Choose Zigbee when these conditions fit

  • You already own a compatible Zigbee hub and the sensor appears on its official compatibility list.
  • You want local sensor-to-device scenes that can continue during a Wi‑Fi interruption, and the manufacturer documents that behavior for your exact devices.
  • You are installing several low-power sensors and prefer a mesh designed for battery devices rather than adding every sensor to Wi‑Fi.
  • You can place the hub centrally, keep powered Zigbee routers available where needed and replace coin cells on the manufacturer’s schedule.
  • You accept that a Zigbee sensor still needs a hub and that hubs from different brands are not automatically interchangeable.

Consider direct Wi‑Fi when these conditions fit

  • Your chosen model is documented to work with the router, app and alarm platform you already use.
  • You prefer a simpler network topology and do not want a separate Zigbee coordinator.
  • Your router provides reliable 2.4 GHz coverage at every door or window, including outbuildings and basements.
  • Cloud-based phone alerts are acceptable, and you have verified what remains functional when the internet is unavailable.
  • You have a plan for router replacement, Wi‑Fi password changes and re-pairing devices after a network outage.

Do not select a direct Wi‑Fi model solely because its product page says “Wi‑Fi alarm.” Confirm whether the sensor itself uses Wi‑Fi or whether it uses a proprietary link to a Wi‑Fi-connected hub, as in Arlo’s SecureLink architecture.

Buyer checklist before ordering

  1. Identify the exact radio path. Read the technical specifications for the sensor, hub and router connection. Record whether the sensor uses Zigbee, direct Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth during setup or a proprietary radio.
  2. Check hub compatibility. Verify the exact model number, region, app and firmware. For Aqara, the cited sensor requires an Aqara hub and is not listed as compatible with other brands’ hubs. For SONOFF, consult the published controller list.
  3. Define the alarm action. Decide whether you need a hub siren, a local light or scene, a push notification, a cellular path, or all of them. A contact sensor alone does not provide professional dispatch.
  4. Test outage expectations on paper. Ask what works during a router outage, an internet outage and a mains-power failure. Separate local siren behavior from remote phone notifications.
  5. Assess battery maintenance. Note the specified cell type, the manufacturer’s stated life and how the app reports low battery. Treat “five years,” “over two years” and “one year” as product claims, not protocol benchmarks.
  6. Measure the installation location. Check the sensor and magnet’s allowable alignment and gap, the frame’s flatness, adhesive or screw options and whether the door can close without forcing the parts apart. Follow the model’s installation guide rather than guessing a gap.
  7. Verify wireless coverage. For Zigbee, plan hub placement and powered mesh routers. For Wi‑Fi, confirm stable 2.4 GHz coverage and reserve a reliable location for the router or access point.
  8. Confirm software features. Ensure the app exposes open/close state, tamper status, battery level, offline alerts and the alarm modes you intend to use. Platform support can differ even when basic pairing succeeds.
  9. Plan recovery. Keep the hub’s account credentials, reset procedure and battery information accessible. Decide how you will silence a false alarm and restore the sensor after replacing a router or hub.

Common failure modes and fixes

The sensor pairs but never triggers an alarm

Check that the sensor is included in the alarm mode or automation, not merely visible as a device. Verify that the magnet moves with the door and that the app changes state when the door opens. If the state changes but no siren sounds, inspect the hub’s alarm schedule, silent mode and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The device disappears after a router change

Direct Wi‑Fi sensors commonly need the new network name and password. Reconnect them using the manufacturer’s documented reset and pairing process. A Zigbee sensor normally remains paired to its hub when the Wi‑Fi router changes, but any cloud account or hub integration may still require attention.

Alerts arrive late or not at all

Determine whether the local state changed first. If the hub saw the opening but the phone did not alert, investigate internet access, cloud service status, phone notification permissions and battery-saving restrictions. A cloud-dependent path can fail even while a local siren or scene continues.

Battery life is much shorter than advertised

Compare your opening frequency and temperature with the manufacturer’s “normal usage” assumption. Improve radio coverage, check for repeated tamper or offline events and use the specified battery chemistry and size. Do not treat another model’s advertised life as a correction factor.

Two Zigbee products will not pair

Check the hub’s approved-device list and region-specific firmware. Zigbee certification does not promise that every manufacturer’s sensor works with every coordinator, and unsupported devices may expose only partial functions or none at all.

Which option is better for a smart-home alarm?

Choose a compatible Zigbee sensor when local scenes, an existing hub and low-power mesh operation are your priorities. The SNZB-04P documentation specifically describes local Zigbee scenes continuing through a Wi‑Fi interruption while powered Zigbee devices remain available. Choose a direct Wi‑Fi design only after confirming its cloud and outage behavior, router coverage and app support. Choose an integrated alarm system when you need a hub siren plus a documented backup path; in that case, verify the sensor’s actual radio, as a Wi‑Fi-connected hub does not make every sensor a Wi‑Fi device.

The practical winner is the system that still performs the alarm action you care about under the failure you expect, while fitting your exact hub and app. Compare the complete architecture and recovery plan before comparing protocol names or battery numbers.
