Choose a USB coordinator when your Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT host is close to the best radio location and you can use an extension cable. Choose a network coordinator when the radio needs to sit elsewhere; use wired Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi for a remote serial adapter whenever possible. For a new Home Assistant ZHA network, Home Assistant currently recommends its Connect ZBT-2 USB adapter. The correct choice still depends on your gateway software, the exact adapter model and firmware, and your home’s network layout.
What a Zigbee coordinator actually does
A Zigbee coordinator is the radio interface used by gateway software to form and manage one Zigbee network. It is the device that permits your software to join sensors, switches, bulbs and plugs, maintains network parameters, and communicates with the mesh. Home Assistant describes a coordinator as typically a USB adapter, while its compatibility documentation also covers network-connected coordinators. Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation explains the supported arrangements.
The coordinator is not the same thing as a router. Mains-powered Zigbee devices such as powered plugs and in-wall switches can act as routers, relaying messages and helping extend coverage. A different coordinator cannot compensate for every poor mesh layout, a metal cabinet, or a radio shadow caused by a server rack.
Recommended Free Tools
One Zigbee network has one coordinator. You cannot normally attach one coordinator to two independent gateway applications at the same time, and adding a second coordinator does not simply double capacity. If you need separate networks, each requires its own coordinator and radio channel plan.

USB dongle versus network adapter at a glance
| Consideration | USB coordinator | Network coordinator |
|---|---|---|
| Connection to gateway | Direct USB connection to the Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT host | Remote serial connection over Ethernet or, less ideally, Wi-Fi |
| Best reason to choose it | The host is near a suitable radio position and a cable can keep the adapter away from interference | The radio needs to be placed in another room, on another floor, or near the center of the mesh |
| Link reliability | Local USB avoids network packet loss and latency | Wired Ethernet is preferred for remote serial traffic; Wi-Fi can introduce loss and latency |
| Installation complexity | Usually the simplest physical connection, but USB placement matters | Requires a powered adapter, network cabling or dependable local network service, and software configuration |
| Typical failure points | USB 3.0 interference, an obstructed dongle, bad cable, or missing coordinator firmware | Unstable Wi-Fi, WAN/VPN routing, incorrect IP or port, and adapter-specific firmware |
| Migration impact | Replacing it can require a documented backup and restore, and sometimes device repairs | The same migration rules apply because the radio identity and network database still matter |
Neither connection type is universally faster, has a guaranteed range, or supports a guaranteed device count. The cited Home Assistant and Zigbee2MQTT guidance establishes placement and connection considerations, not a market-wide performance ranking.
When a USB dongle is the better choice
USB is the sensible default when the gateway host is physically close to the area where most Zigbee devices live. It has fewer moving parts: there is no remote serial service to configure, and the radio traffic does not depend on a second network hop. That simplicity is particularly useful for a first ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT installation.
Plan the radio position, not just the USB port
Do not leave the dongle pressed against a mini-PC, a metal server chassis, a USB 3.0 hard-drive enclosure, or a dense bundle of cables. Home Assistant’s documented placement advice is to use a USB extension cable, a USB 2.0 port or powered USB 2.0 hub, and distance from USB 3.0 devices to reduce interference. Zigbee2MQTT also recommends an extension cable for better range and stability; see its “What do I need?” guide.
A short extension lets you move the radio into open air and rotate it away from nearby electronics. A powered USB 2.0 hub can help when the host’s port is crowded or cannot provide reliable power. The official guidance does not specify a universally best cable brand or length, so select a well-built cable long enough to create physical separation without placing the adapter where it can be knocked or pulled.

USB models named in Home Assistant’s compatibility guidance
| Adapter example | What the documentation establishes | What you must still verify |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 | Home Assistant’s current recommended USB choice for setting up a new ZHA network | That your gateway is ZHA if you are relying on this specific recommendation; it is not a blanket Zigbee2MQTT endorsement |
| SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus ZBDongle-E | Home Assistant lists the EFR32MG21 variant as tested and compatible with ZHA | The exact “E” suffix and radio variant; similarly named versions are not interchangeable assumptions |
| TI CC2652 or CC1352 USB adapters | Home Assistant lists adapters using Texas Instruments coordinator firmware among compatible ZHA hardware | The exact board, coordinator firmware and current support in your chosen gateway |
| ConBee III | Listed by Home Assistant among tested or compatible ZHA adapters | Current firmware and the connection method supported by your software version |
These are compatibility examples, not a promise that every revision works with every Zigbee application. Check the model suffix, chipset and firmware before ordering.
When a network coordinator is worth the extra setup
A network coordinator separates the radio’s physical location from the computer running your gateway. That can solve a practical problem: your Home Assistant server may be in a basement rack, while the best radio position is in a central hallway; or your Zigbee devices may be distributed across floors and the host has no convenient USB position.
Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation lists network coordinators such as the SMLIGHT SLZB-06 POE and Tube Ethernet serial coordinators. The list confirms that network-connected hardware can be used with ZHA; it does not make every model, firmware revision or radio variant interchangeable.
Use wired Ethernet for a remote serial adapter
Zigbee2MQTT supports remote adapters over Ethernet and Wi-Fi, but its supported-adapters guide warns that Wi-Fi can be less stable because serial protocols do not handle packet loss and latency well. It recommends wired Ethernet when a local USB or UART/GPIO connection is not practical. Home Assistant likewise cautions against using its serial-proxy approach over Wi-Fi, a WAN or a VPN because the coordinator needs a stable connection.

“Network” therefore should not be read as “put the coordinator anywhere on the internet.” Keep the adapter on the same reliable local network as the gateway, preferably on wired Ethernet. A power-over-Ethernet model can reduce the number of cables at the radio location, but PoE convenience does not prove better Zigbee range or reliability.
Network placement checklist
- Choose a location that improves the radio path to your devices, not merely a location with a spare network socket.
- Use a wired Ethernet run when possible, with stable power and a predictable local IP address or DHCP reservation.
- Confirm the adapter’s serial protocol, IP port and gateway integration instructions before installation.
- Keep the coordinator away from large metal enclosures, Wi-Fi access points and high-noise electronics even though its Zigbee connection is remote.
- Do not route the serial connection through a WAN, VPN or unreliable wireless bridge.
Match the coordinator to your gateway software
The same physical radio can be supported differently by ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT. Decide which application will own the network before buying hardware.
| Gateway | Selection guidance | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant ZHA | Use the ZHA compatible-hardware information. Home Assistant currently recommends Connect ZBT-2 for a new ZHA network and lists compatible USB and network examples. | Home Assistant does not update firmware on third-party adapters; firmware support remains with the manufacturer or user. |
| Zigbee2MQTT | Its official recommended adapter families are zStack (Texas Instruments), EmberZNet (Silicon Labs) and deCONZ (Dresden Elektronik). It supports local and remote connection types. | The exact adapter, firmware and connection mode must appear in the current Zigbee2MQTT documentation; ZiGate is marked not maintained and ZBOSS experimental in the current adapter guide. |
Do not buy solely from a chipset name. An adapter needs coordinator firmware, and some units arrive preflashed while others require a firmware installation before pairing devices. Verify the firmware image and update procedure for the exact board.

Zigbee2MQTT explains that CC2652 and CC1352 have no relevant difference for its 2.4 GHz Zigbee use. The P variants support a higher transmit-power specification than R or RB variants. That is a chip-level specification, not a promise of a particular distance in your home; walls, antenna design, interference and router placement determine practical coverage.

Silicon Labs, deCONZ and other families
Silicon Labs EmberZNet and Dresden Elektronik deCONZ are established adapter families in Zigbee2MQTT’s guide. Home Assistant also lists specific Silicon Labs, TI and ConBee/RaspBee hardware in its ZHA compatibility and migration information. Support is model- and firmware-specific, so record the complete product name, suffix and radio family before you begin.
A decision process that avoids the common buying mistakes
- Name the gateway. Decide whether the network will be managed by ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT or another application. A recommendation for one gateway is not automatically a recommendation for another.
- Map the best radio location. Identify where a coordinator would have the clearest path to the first group of devices. Note server racks, electrical panels, concrete walls, metal appliances and USB 3.0 equipment.
- Test the connection option. If the host can reach that location with a USB extension and the adapter can be kept clear of interference, USB is usually the simpler route. If not, plan a wired Ethernet coordinator at the better location.
- Check the exact hardware record. Confirm model suffix, chipset, antenna arrangement, connection type and whether coordinator firmware is installed. Do not treat two products with similar names as equivalent.
- Read the current software entry. Look up the adapter in the relevant ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT documentation and check whether the listed connection method matches your plan.
- Plan recovery. For an existing network, make the supported backup before changing coordinators and understand whether devices may need to be repaired.
- Budget for placement accessories. A USB extension cable or a properly wired Ethernet run can have more practical value than moving to a different radio family without changing the physical layout.
Set up a USB coordinator correctly
- Install the gateway software first. Finish the ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT installation so you know which adapter configuration screen and firmware requirements apply.
- Prepare the adapter. Confirm that it has coordinator firmware, not router or unsupported firmware. If it is not preflashed, follow the exact manufacturer’s or software project’s procedure for that model.
- Connect through USB 2.0 separation. Use an extension cable and, when practical, a USB 2.0 port or powered USB 2.0 hub. Keep the radio away from USB 3.0 devices and the host’s metal body.
- Select the serial device. In the gateway’s integration or adapter settings, choose the detected serial path and the adapter type required by the software. Do not guess a protocol from the connector shape.
- Create or restore the network. For a new network, let the gateway initialize the coordinator. For an existing network, use the documented backup and migration workflow instead of starting a second network by accident.
- Pair a nearby device first. Join one easily accessible sensor or plug, then inspect logs and link quality before installing devices throughout the building.
- Secure the final position. Strain-relieve the extension cable and leave the adapter in open air. A dongle hidden behind the server can undo the benefit of a compatible radio.
Set up a network coordinator correctly
- Choose a local wired location. Place the adapter where it improves the mesh and where an Ethernet cable can remain connected reliably.
- Power the adapter. Follow its power or PoE requirements. A network link that is up while the radio repeatedly reboots is not a stable coordinator connection.
- Identify its address and port. Use the adapter’s documented discovery method or your router’s lease table. Prefer a DHCP reservation so a restart does not silently change the address.
- Configure the gateway’s remote adapter settings. Enter the exact protocol, host address and port required by the adapter and by ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. Use the software’s current documentation rather than a generic TCP serial setting.
- Keep the route local. Do not place the serial stream behind a VPN, WAN hop or unstable Wi-Fi bridge. If Ethernet is impossible, understand that Wi-Fi adds a stability risk rather than assuming it behaves like USB.
- Initialize or restore the network. A new coordinator can form a new network; an existing one should be restored only through the supported migration process.
- Verify failure behavior. Temporarily disconnect Ethernet or power and confirm that the gateway reports the coordinator loss clearly. This makes future troubleshooting easier.
Replacing an existing coordinator: backup and migration
Changing the physical adapter is not the same as adding a router. The coordinator stores network information that your gateway uses to recognize and manage devices. ZHA documents migration between specified Silicon Labs, TI and ConBee/RaspBee adapters through its own backup workflow. Zigbee2MQTT warns that switching adapters may require repairing devices in some circumstances.
Before unplugging the old adapter
- Record the current gateway version, coordinator model, firmware version and serial or network settings.
- Make the backup supported by your software and store a copy somewhere separate from the gateway host.
- Read the migration instructions for the exact old and new adapter families; a generic backup file is not proof that every combination is restorable.
- Plan a maintenance window and keep the old coordinator untouched until the new one is working.
After the change
- Install the new coordinator’s required firmware and connect it using the planned USB or wired Ethernet method.
- Use the gateway’s documented restore or migrate action, not the “new network” action, when you intend to preserve the existing network.
- Check that the coordinator starts with the expected network identity and that devices appear without unnecessary re-pairing.
- Test representative mains-powered routers, battery sensors and remotes. A single successful pairing does not prove that the old mesh was restored correctly.
- If devices do not return, consult the software’s migration notes before factory-resetting them; some failures are recoverable without deleting every device.
Coordinator choice cannot replace a healthy mesh
A coordinator is the network’s radio origin, but mains-powered Zigbee routers carry messages beyond its immediate range and increase the number of devices that can connect. If a sensor is separated from the coordinator by several walls, adding a well-placed router may be more effective than buying a different coordinator.

Allow time for a mesh to settle after moving routers or changing the coordinator. Pairing a device at its final location, rather than beside the coordinator and then carrying it away, gives the gateway a more realistic route to manage.
Common problems and practical fixes
The adapter is not detected over USB
- Move it to a USB 2.0 port or powered USB 2.0 hub and try a known-good extension cable.
- Check the host operating system’s serial-device list and confirm that no other application has opened the port.
- Verify that the adapter is running coordinator firmware and that the selected protocol matches the hardware family.
- Disconnect other USB 3.0 storage or radio devices temporarily to identify interference or power problems.
The network coordinator connects, then drops
- Replace Wi-Fi or a wireless bridge with wired Ethernet where possible.
- Check power, Ethernet link negotiation, address reservations and the adapter’s documented port.
- Remove WAN, VPN or proxy hops from the serial path.
- Review gateway logs for packet loss, timeouts and adapter resets rather than assuming the Zigbee radio itself is defective.
Pairing works beside the coordinator but fails in rooms farther away
- Move the USB adapter away from the host or relocate the network adapter to a more central wired point.
- Add mains-powered Zigbee routers between the coordinator and the weak area.
- Check for metal appliances, reinforced walls and crowded 2.4 GHz equipment.
- Pair or re-pair at the final location only after the mesh has suitable router coverage.
A replacement coordinator starts an empty network
You probably initialized a new network instead of restoring the old one, or the adapter’s migration path is unsupported. Stop pairing new devices, keep the old coordinator safe, and follow the exact backup and migration procedure for your gateway and adapter families.

Quick Recap
Final buying recommendations by situation
- New Home Assistant ZHA installation with a nearby host: Start with the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 recommendation, use a USB extension and keep it away from USB 3.0 equipment.
- New Zigbee2MQTT installation: Choose an adapter family listed as supported by Zigbee2MQTT, confirm coordinator firmware, and decide between local USB and wired Ethernet based on the radio location.
- Server hidden in a basement or metal rack: Prefer a network coordinator at a better location over leaving a USB dongle buried beside the server; make the network link wired and local.
- Existing network that already works: Do not replace the coordinator for a theoretical upgrade alone. Back up first, verify the migration path and account for possible repairs.
- Coverage problems after installation: Improve USB placement or add mains-powered routers before assuming a different coordinator model will solve the mesh.
