ZFS can use a large share of RAM for its Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC), an in-memory read cache that helps avoid slower disk reads. High ARC use alone does not mean your system is short on usable memory or that ZFS is malfunctioning. The familiar “half of RAM” rule is also outdated for current OpenZFS: since version 2.3.0, its documented automatic maximum is calculated differently.

Why ZFS uses RAM for ARC

OpenZFS describes ARC as ZFS’s in-memory cache. It keeps data available in memory so a later read may not need to go to disk. That is useful caching, not automatically wasted memory or evidence of a fault. OpenZFS explains the role of caching in its caching documentation and discusses cache behavior in its workload tuning guide.

The useful question is not simply “How much RAM does ARC occupy?” It is whether the machine is experiencing real memory pressure or whether the workload needs more memory capacity.

Does ZFS still use half of system memory by default?

Not as a general rule for current OpenZFS. The automatic zfs_arc_max setting is zero, which means OpenZFS selects a maximum according to a version- and platform-specific rule. The current module-parameter documentation says that from OpenZFS 2.3.0, on all platforms, the automatic maximum is the larger of total system memory minus 1 GiB and five-eighths of total system memory.

OpenZFS behavior Automatic ARC maximum when zfs_arc_max is 0
Before 2.3.0 on Linux Half of system memory.
Before 2.3.0 on FreeBSD The larger of total system memory minus 1 GiB and five-eighths of total system memory.
2.3.0 and later, all platforms The larger of total system memory minus 1 GiB and five-eighths of total system memory.

These are documented automatic maximums, not promises that ARC will always occupy that much RAM. The exact active maximum can be checked in ARC statistics such as c_max. See OpenZFS’s module parameter reference for the setting and version details.

ARC size and its configured maximum are different

The current ARC size is how much memory the cache is using now; zfs_arc_max is a maximum limit. ARC can respond to memory pressure, so an observed cache size should not be treated as the configured cap. OpenZFS also documents zfs_arc_sys_free, which sets a target for memory left free to the system. The available controls and behavior are described in the OpenZFS zfs(4) manual.

Should you limit ZFS ARC?

Consider changing ARC settings only when you have a concrete memory-pressure or workload reason. There is no single tuning value established as correct for every system.

  • First distinguish a large cache from an actual system memory problem; ARC occupancy alone does not establish pressure.
  • Check the installed OpenZFS version and the active maximum, including the documented c_max statistic, before assuming the old half-RAM rule applies.
  • If you do change zfs_arc_max, account for the fact that setting it below the current ARC size does not force immediate shrinkage when there is no memory pressure.
  • The cap can be changed dynamically, but OpenZFS documents that it cannot be returned to zero while running. Avoid treating a setting change as a universally safe or instantly reversible fix.

These behaviors and caveats are covered in the OpenZFS module parameter documentation and zfs(4) manual.

When more RAM may be warranted

A RAM upgrade is worth considering if your workload demonstrates genuine memory pressure or needs more capacity. A large ARC number by itself is not a reason to buy memory; it may simply reflect ZFS using available memory for caching. The OpenZFS documentation establishes no particular upgrade capacity, speed, or product as the right choice for an individual system.
