Compression is the right starting point for most ZFS pools. It usually captures most of the practical space savings at a fraction of deduplication’s cost. Deduplication can save more when your pool contains many byte-for-byte identical blocks—such as virtual-machine images cloned from one base or backups of similar systems—but it consumes memory and I/O continuously and can hurt performance when its deduplication table (DDT) is not cached. Measure your own data before enabling either feature, and treat OpenZFS’s guidance of a simulated deduplication ratio comfortably above 2x as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.
Compression and deduplication solve different problems
Both features reduce the physical space ZFS allocates, but they look for different kinds of redundancy. Compression shrinks each record when its bytes can be represented more efficiently. Deduplication (dedup) compares blocks and stores one copy when multiple blocks are exactly identical, then records references to that shared copy.
| Characteristic | Compression | Deduplication |
|---|---|---|
| What it detects | Patterns within an individual record | Identical blocks appearing more than once |
| Where it is configured | Dataset property; inherited by children unless overridden | Dataset property; defaults to off and can be limited to selected datasets |
| Primary resource cost | CPU for compressing and decompressing records | Memory and I/O for DDT lookups on writes and frees, plus CPU for hashing and bookkeeping |
| When it affects data | Newly written records; old records need rewriting | Newly written blocks; old blocks are not retroactively deduplicated |
| Best evidence of benefit | compressratio, refcompressratio, and allocated-versus-logical space on the actual dataset |

A file can be highly compressible without sharing any blocks with another file. Conversely, two already-compressed files can be poor compression candidates yet still deduplicate if they contain identical blocks. That is why no universal percentage or winner exists.

OpenZFS documentation says that “For general file storage, compression usually gives most of the benefit at a fraction of the cost.” Compression normally requires no large index proportional to the amount of unique data, and it does not require a global search for matching blocks on every write. For those reasons, the project also cautions: “Unless you have a specific reason, do not enable dedup.” These are project-level recommendations, not a benchmark of your hardware or files.

Compression is particularly attractive when the pool contains text, databases with repeated structures, source code, logs, virtual-disk formats that are not already compressed, or other data with predictable byte patterns. The actual ratio still depends on record size, file contents, compression algorithm, and sector allocation.
Dedup has a narrower but important use case. A backup target receiving many copies of nearly the same operating system, or a virtualization store containing clones made from a common base image, may produce enough identical blocks to justify the DDT overhead. A pool of unique photographs, encrypted archives, or modern compressed media generally offers fewer exact matches; deduplication cannot share blocks that differ by even one byte.
What compression does inside ZFS
Per-record processing
ZFS divides data into records and attempts to compress each record before writing it. A record that compresses well occupies fewer sectors; a record that does not compress well is written with little or no reduction. Reads transparently decompress the record, so applications continue to see the original logical bytes.

OpenZFS describes lz4 as fast with a moderate compression ratio and zstd as capable of a higher ratio at higher CPU cost. The choice is therefore a throughput and latency decision as well as a space decision. A CPU-rich server with slower storage may favor a higher-ratio algorithm; a busy system where CPU headroom is scarce may favor the lower-cost option. Measure application performance rather than assuming the highest ratio is automatically best.
Compression is not retroactive
Changing a dataset’s compression property affects data written after the change. Existing records keep their previous representation until they are rewritten. To reclaim space from old data, copy it to a new location or otherwise perform a controlled rewrite, then verify the resulting accounting. A property toggle alone does not transform records already on disk.
How ZFS deduplication works
Block identity and the DDT
With deduplication enabled, ZFS calculates an identity for each block and consults a deduplication table (DDT). If an identical block already exists, the new reference points to the existing copy instead of allocating another copy. If it is new, ZFS stores the block and adds an entry. The DDT must also be updated when references are removed, so deduplication affects frees as well as writes.

Why memory and I/O matter
DDT lookups add work to normal storage operations. When the relevant DDT entries remain in memory, the cost can be manageable. When they do not fit in cache, ZFS may need additional device I/O, increasing latency and reducing write or administrative performance. The penalty can persist even after the pool has accumulated enough duplicate data to save space.

OpenZFS’s current documentation gives a planning estimate of at least 1.25 GiB of RAM per 1 TiB of stored data. That is not a fixed requirement: the project says actual needs depend on block sizes and how much data is duplicated. A separate workload-tuning page estimates slightly more than 320 bytes per cached DDT entry. This is a sizing detail for cached entries, not a promise that a particular total amount of RAM will make deduplication safe.
Deduplication is also not retroactive
Enabling deduplication changes how future writes are handled. Blocks already stored are not automatically scanned and merged merely because the property is turned on. Rewriting data through a dataset with deduplication enabled can create shared blocks, but that rewrite consumes time, bandwidth, and temporary space and should be planned like any other migration.
Which one saves more space?
The answer depends on the redundancy in your pool, not on the feature name. Use these questions to identify the dominant opportunity:
- Can each record be represented with fewer bytes? If yes, compression is likely to provide savings even when every file is unique.
- Do many blocks match exactly? If yes, deduplication may add savings beyond compression, especially for cloned virtual machines or repeated backup images.
- Are the files already compressed or encrypted? If yes, compression may be close to 1:1, while deduplication still depends on exact block reuse.
- Will the DDT fit the available memory and cache? If no, the operational cost may outweigh the saved disk space.
- What does the pool actually report? Ratios measured on your data are more useful than generic claims.
Compression and deduplication can be enabled together. In that arrangement, records are compressed and identical resulting blocks can be shared. The combined result is workload-specific: compression may reduce the size of each unique block, while deduplication removes repeated copies. Adding deduplication still adds DDT costs even when compression is already enabled.

zfs get -r compression pool
Look for datasets whose value differs from the pool-wide expectation. A child dataset can have its own setting, so checking only the parent can give a misleading picture.
Check ratios and logical versus physical usage
For a focused dataset, inspect both the configured property and the ratios ZFS reports:
zfs get compression,compressratio,refcompressratio pool/data
For a pool-wide view, list logical and allocated usage recursively:
Recommended Free Tools
zfs list -o name,used,logicalused,compressratio -r pool
compressratio reflects the effect of compression in the reported usage, while refcompressratio is useful when snapshots and clones make referenced space different from a dataset’s directly allocated space. Interpret both in the context of snapshots, reservations, and the exact dataset hierarchy.
Simulate deduplication without enabling it
OpenZFS recommends simulating the DDT for the data currently in the pool:
zdb -S pool
The simulation estimates how many unique and duplicate blocks the pool would have and reports a deduplication ratio. OpenZFS documentation suggests that deduplication is not worthwhile unless the simulated ratio is comfortably above 2x. That threshold is guidance, not a guarantee of future savings or performance. It describes the current contents; incoming data can have a different mix of duplicates, and the DDT may grow beyond the simulation’s assumptions.

Applying compression safely
- Inventory datasets. Run
zfs get -r compression pooland identify which datasets hold compressible data, already-compressed data, virtual disks, databases, or backups. - Measure the baseline. Capture
used, logicalused, compressratio, and application latency before changing settings. - Choose an algorithm for the workload. Use a fast algorithm when CPU headroom or latency is the constraint; consider a higher-ratio algorithm when CPU capacity is available and storage reduction matters more.
- Set the property on the intended dataset. For example,
zfs set compression=lz4 pool/data. Use the algorithm you selected rather than copying this example blindly. - Write representative data. The new setting only affects new records, so monitor ratios as normal workloads create or rewrite files.
- Verify results. Re-run the property and usage commands, then check application throughput and latency. A good ratio does not justify a change that violates performance requirements.
- Plan any rewrite separately. If older data must benefit, use a controlled copy-and-replace or other rewrite process with sufficient free space and a recovery plan.
Since OpenZFS 2.2.0, newly created datasets default to compression=on. Datasets created before that release keep their previous setting, so a mixed-version history can produce different behavior across an otherwise similar pool. Check the property instead of inferring it from the OpenZFS release alone.
Evaluating and enabling deduplication selectively
Start with a candidate dataset
Deduplication is a dataset property and defaults to off. Limit it to datasets with a defensible source of identical blocks rather than enabling it pool-wide. Examples include VM image libraries built from a common base and backup datasets that repeatedly receive similar systems. Keep unrelated general-purpose file datasets on compression alone unless measurement shows a reason to do otherwise.
Use the simulation as a gate
Run zdb -S pool and record the estimated ratio and DDT characteristics. If the result is not comfortably above 2x, the documented guidance points toward leaving deduplication disabled. If it clears that bar, validate that available memory, storage latency, and administrative tooling can absorb the DDT workload.
Enable, observe, and be ready to stop
- Confirm that the dataset is the one intended for deduplication and that backups and rollback procedures are current.
- Enable deduplication on that dataset with the ZFS property command used by your operating procedure, such as
zfs set dedup=on pool/vmstore. - Write a representative batch rather than extrapolating from a tiny test file.
- Watch memory pressure, write latency, pool I/O, and application behavior while the DDT grows.
- Inspect deduplication statistics with
zpool status -D pooland review the relevant dataset properties. - If the operational cost is unacceptable, stop new deduplicated writes and migrate or rewrite data according to a tested rollback plan. Disabling the property does not undo existing sharing; it changes handling of future writes.
Do not treat a high deduplication ratio as a complete success metric. A ratio can look attractive while cache misses make writes or frees unacceptably slow. The decision must include both physical-space savings and the service-level impact of maintaining the DDT.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Allocation geometry can erase apparent compression savings
Nominal compressibility is not identical to allocated-space reduction. ZFS allocates whole sectors, so a compressed record may still occupy the same number of sectors as an only slightly larger record. OpenZFS gives a concrete example: a 16 KiB record written on 4 KiB sectors needs at least 25% compression savings before the allocation drops from four sectors to three. A record that shrinks by less than that threshold can show useful logical compression while consuming the same physical sector count.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is why you should compare logical and allocated usage, not just a compression ratio. Record size, sector size, ashift-related allocation geometry, metadata, snapshots, and copy-on-write effects all influence the space users can actually reclaim.

Workload examples
| Workload | Likely first choice | Reasoning and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Documents, source code, logs | Compression | Repeated patterns within records can be reduced without requiring identical files. Measure the dataset ratio. |
| Photos, video, encrypted archives | Compression, usually with modest expectations | Many files are already compressed or randomized. Deduplication helps only if blocks are truly identical. |
| VM clones from one base image | Compression plus measured deduplication | Exact block reuse can be substantial, but estimate DDT memory and test cache behavior. |
| Backup repository receiving similar machines | Compression first; deduplication if simulation supports it | Repeated operating-system blocks may deduplicate. Future backup diversity can reduce the ratio. |
| Mixed general-purpose pool | Compression on relevant datasets; deduplication limited or off | Different datasets have different redundancy and latency needs. Avoid imposing DDT costs where duplicates are rare. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming deduplication always saves more
Deduplication only removes exact repeats. If data differs at the block level, it cannot share it. Correct the assumption by running the simulation and measuring the real pool.
Assuming compression settings rewrite old files
They do not. Correct the misunderstanding by scheduling a controlled rewrite when the value of reclaiming old data exceeds the migration cost.
Using a generic RAM-per-terabyte number as a guarantee
The 1.25 GiB per 1 TiB figure is an OpenZFS planning estimate, and the slightly-more-than-320-byte figure applies to cached DDT entries. Neither is a universal total-RAM requirement. Size from block size, duplicate rate, DDT population, cache behavior, and workload latency targets.
Reading a ratio without checking allocated space
Sector rounding can leave physical allocation unchanged even when records compress. Compare used and logicalused, and account for snapshots and metadata.
Enabling deduplication globally for convenience
Because deduplication is a dataset property, apply it only where the evidence supports it. A selective design limits DDT growth and confines any performance impact to the workload that benefits.
Ignoring version history
New datasets default to compression beginning with OpenZFS 2.2.0, while older datasets retain their prior settings. Always inspect properties recursively on the actual pool.
A practical decision framework
- Enable or verify compression first. It is the lower-cost baseline for general storage and often supplies most of the attainable reduction.
- Measure physical results. Use dataset ratios and logical-versus-allocated usage after representative writes.
- Identify exact-duplicate workloads. Look for cloned VM images or repetitive backup streams rather than assuming all repeated-looking files are block-identical.
- Simulate deduplication. Run
zdb -S pooland require a comfortably above-2x estimate before treating deduplication as a candidate. - Model resources. Include DDT memory, cache residency, extra I/O, write and free latency, and administrative complexity—not just disk capacity.
- Scope the change. Enable deduplication only on datasets likely to benefit, then monitor with
zpool status -D pooland system-level metrics. - Reassess over time. A pool’s workload changes. New data can lower duplicate rates, increase DDT size, or alter the balance between saved space and service performance.
Bottom line for most ZFS pools
Use compression as the default experiment and verify its real allocated-space effect. Consider deduplication only when identical blocks are a defining property of the workload, the simulated ratio is comfortably above 2x, and the system has enough memory and I/O capacity to keep DDT lookups from becoming a bottleneck. Neither feature retroactively transforms existing records, and neither produces a guaranteed percentage without measurement on the actual pool.
