Choose Zenless Zone Zero if you want real-time action combat and direct control during fights. Choose Honkai: Star Rail if you prefer turn-based decisions, team planning, and selecting each character’s move. Both are free-to-play HoYoverse RPGs with chance-based character and equipment systems, but their combat formats and banner rules are different enough that the better game depends on how you want to play. The safest approach is to try both for free, then spend only after you understand the current banner rules in-game.
The short answer: which game fits which player?
Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) is an urban-fantasy action RPG. Its fights are built around real-time input: you control a team in active combat rather than waiting for a turn menu. The setting centers on New Eridu, a metropolis surviving the calamity known as the Hollows.
Honkai: Star Rail (HSR) is the turn-based team RPG choice. You select actions for your party, consider turn order and available resources, and plan how abilities work together. If you enjoy deliberate decisions more than reflexive control, this is the more natural starting point.

Neither format is objectively superior. The meaningful decision is whether you want to perform actions as combat unfolds or issue commands and plan turns. Claims about which game has more content, less grinding, easier builds, better accessibility or shorter sessions require evidence beyond the systems documented here, so they should not decide your purchase or spending plan.
How the combat formats differ
Zenless Zone Zero: direct, real-time action
ZZZ presents itself as an urban-fantasy action RPG. You actively control the battle as it happens, making it the appropriate choice if “I want to play the fight” means moving, attacking and reacting in real time. The game’s team structure still matters, but the basic input loop is action-oriented rather than a sequence of turn menus.

This distinction matters before you evaluate characters. An agent’s value to you depends partly on whether you enjoy controlling an action party. Someone who finds real-time combat engaging may regard ZZZ’s format as its central attraction; someone who prefers to pause mentally between decisions may find HSR’s structure more comfortable.
Honkai: Star Rail: turn-by-turn planning
HSR uses turn-based combat. You choose what party members do, decide when to spend abilities and account for the order in which actions occur. That makes team building and planning central to the experience even when you are not physically reacting to an attack.

Use combat preference as the first filter
- Pick ZZZ first if you want immediate, real-time control and an action-RPG feel.
- Pick HSR first if you want to examine a party, choose commands and plan a sequence of turns.
- Try both before spending if you are unsure. The combat difference is large enough that a free trial tells you more than a tier list or a banner advertisement.
Progression and character building: what is established
Honkai: Star Rail’s documented build pieces
HoYoverse’s Version 3.0 notes explicitly identify four HSR progression elements: character levels, Light Cones, Traces and Relics. The same material refers to a Leveling Guide for checking progress and materials, and to Smart Equip for Relics.
- Character levels: the level of the playable character.
- Light Cones: equipment associated with a character build.
- Traces: upgradeable character abilities or bonuses.
- Relics: equipment pieces that are managed as part of a build; Smart Equip is mentioned as a convenience feature.
These names tell you what categories you will encounter, but they do not establish how many hours of farming a particular account needs, how expensive a build is, or whether HSR is easier than ZZZ.
What cannot be fairly claimed about ZZZ progression
The official material used for this comparison does not provide an equivalent, comprehensive ZZZ progression reference. It would therefore be inaccurate to declare that ZZZ has less grind, simpler builds, faster leveling or more generous upgrade materials. Those conclusions need current, like-for-like documentation and account-level testing.

You can still make a sensible choice without a grind ranking. If you dislike action combat, a supposedly simpler build system would not compensate for the wrong combat format. If you enjoy real-time action, an incomplete progression comparison should not prevent you from trying ZZZ.
A practical way to evaluate progression yourself
- Play each game far enough to unlock its normal team-building loop.
- Open the in-game character and equipment screens and note which upgrades are immediately required.
- Check the game’s own material or leveling guidance before spending currency.
- Ask whether you enjoy improving a roster, not merely whether an individual upgrade is cheap or fast.
This method avoids turning an older version note into a permanent statement about a live-service game.
Gacha terminology: Signal Search versus Warp
Both games use chance-based acquisition for characters and equipment, but they name the activity differently. In ZZZ you perform a Signal Search. In HSR you perform a Warp. The banner type, counter and guarantee are not interchangeable, so always read the View Details panel for the exact banner you are considering.

These are permanent-channel rules. The 50-search guarantee and the 300-search selection are not a general promise for every ZZZ banner, and they should not be compared directly with a recurring limited-banner pity threshold in HSR.
Limited Agent and W-Engine channels
A separate official Version 3.0 limited-channel notice explains the separation between channels. Limited S-Rank Agents and W-Engines do not become available on the permanent Star-Studded Cast channel. Search counts on Exclusive Agent Channels accumulate across those channels, while remaining independent from other channel types. W-Engine channel counts are tracked separately.
Because that notice describes a historical version schedule, use it to understand the channel separation rather than to assume a current limited banner has identical rates or featured items. Open the live banner’s View Details screen before searching.
Honkai: Star Rail banner rules
Character Event Warps
HoYoverse’s Help Center article dated September 23, 2025 states: “You are guaranteed a 5-star character at least once every 90 Warps.” The same article lists a 0.600% base five-star rate and a 1.600% consolidated rate including the guarantee.

The 90-Warp counter applies to Character Event Warps. It is not a universal counter shared with Light Cone banners or every other Warp type.
Light Cone Event Warps
The Help Center states: “You are guaranteed a 5-star Light Cone at least once every 80 Warps.” It lists a 0.800% base five-star rate. Each five-star Light Cone has a 75% chance to be the featured item; if the five-star result is not featured, the next five-star is guaranteed to be featured.

Four-star-or-higher guarantee
HSR also guarantees a four-star-or-higher item at least once every ten Warps. This is a separate quality guarantee from the five-star character and Light Cone thresholds.
Independent counters
Banner-type counters are independent. A search on a Light Cone banner does not advance the Character Event Warp counter, and the game’s current rules may specify additional distinctions between banner types. Treat the counter shown in the relevant View Details panel as the authoritative one.

It is tempting to write “ZZZ guarantees an S-Rank in 50, while HSR guarantees a five-star in 90,” but that comparison hides the most important qualification. ZZZ’s 50-search figure is a one-time new-player guarantee on the permanent Star-Studded Cast channel. HSR’s 90-Warp figure is a recurring ceiling described for Character Event Warps. They refer to different channels, different item terminology and different availability rules.
ZZZ’s 300-search selectable S-Rank is also a one-time permanent-channel recruitment benefit, not a recurring limited-banner promise. Conversely, HSR’s featured-character and Light Cone rules are tied to their respective event-banner counters. Before comparing generosity, write down the exact banner, currency, counter and guarantee shown in-game.
Spending decisions for free-to-play and paying players
If you plan to spend nothing
Choose by combat first. The documented guarantee rules do not establish how many free searches or Warps an account earns, so they cannot predict whether a free-to-play player will obtain a particular limited character. Avoid planning around a headline number without checking the current in-game income and banner schedule.

- Decide which banner type you are targeting before purchasing currency.
- Read the current View Details screen, including featured-item rules and counter behavior.
- Keep ZZZ permanent-channel onboarding guarantees separate from limited-channel plans.
- Keep HSR Character Event Warp and Light Cone Event Warp counters separate in your notes.
- Set a personal spending limit before searching; a guarantee is a maximum counter, not a promise that a desired result is inexpensive.
What the published figures do not tell you
The official figures do not provide a reliable price estimate for a desired character, a total number of free pulls, or the probability of completing a full roster. Do not convert the 50, 80 or 90 thresholds into a universal cost claim without current currency prices, earning rates and banner-specific rules.
Live-service context and platform plans
Zenless Zone Zero Version 3.3
HoYoverse’s October 12, 2026 announcement schedules Version 3.3 for October 21, 2026 and describes a main-story segment introducing mech combat. It lists planned availability on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PC, iOS, Android and Steam.
Because October 21 is later than the October 12 announcement date, treat this as a scheduled version and platform plan, not proof that Version 3.3 is already live. Check the current client and official announcement for release status.
Honkai: Star Rail Version 4.6 context
October 2026 Version 4.6 material confirms that HSR continues to add version-specific characters, Light Cones, areas, events and combat effects. That establishes ongoing live-service development; it does not prove that HSR has more content, a faster update cadence or a larger game than ZZZ.

- Calling ZZZ turn-based: its defining format is action-oriented, real-time combat.
- Treating all ZZZ guarantees as one pity counter: permanent, Exclusive Agent and W-Engine channels are separated.
- Comparing 50 ZZZ searches directly with 90 HSR Warps: the ZZZ figure is a one-time permanent-channel onboarding guarantee, while the HSR figure describes Character Event Warps.
- Assuming a Light Cone search advances a character counter in HSR: banner-type counters are independent.
- Using an old banner notice as a current rate sheet: open the live View Details page.
- Claiming one game is less grindy or easier to build: the documented material does not establish a complete, current comparison.
- Interpreting a scheduled update as released content: Version 3.3 was announced for October 21, 2026, so confirm its actual release status.
Bottom line for a new player
Start with the combat question, not the banner spreadsheet. Pick Zenless Zone Zero if controlling an action fight sounds exciting; pick Honkai: Star Rail if turn-by-turn planning is what you want from an RPG. Then learn the exact banner rules in the game you choose: ZZZ’s permanent Star-Studded Cast onboarding benefits are distinct from its limited channels, while HSR’s 90-Warp character and 80-Warp Light Cone guarantees use independent counters. Try the free versions before spending, and treat every guarantee, rate and featured list as a rule to verify on the current banner screen.
