The Nintendo Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time keeps the original adventure’s structure but adds targeted side content, modern movement, tougher shooting challenges and selective dungeon redesigns. Nintendo has announced a November 5, 2026 release. Preview coverage has verified a Castle Town bug quest, the Threads of Time quest log, Fairy Messages, jump, dash and swim abilities, and substantial changes to the Forest Temple.

What is new in the Ocarina of Time remake?

This is a preservation-minded remake rather than a new interpretation of Hyrule. The main journey, major locations and progression remain recognizable, while quality-of-life systems and carefully chosen encounters address areas that feel dated in the original.

A Castle Town bug-catching quest

A potion-shop character in Castle Town asks Link to deal with a bug. After catching it, Link receives an empty bottle and can apparently keep the bottle as part of the reward. The character also offers to fill it with a healing red potion once the request is complete. This is a small quest, but it demonstrates the remake’s approach: new activities are woven into familiar spaces instead of replacing the original route.

Fairy Messages and Threads of Time

Fairy Messages are hidden around Hyrule and provide hints for secrets and dungeon clues. Nintendo has also indicated that fairy thoughts can be found throughout Hyrule. The Threads of Time quest log gives players a dedicated place to track objectives, making optional tasks easier to resume than in the 1998 design.

Are the minigames harder?

Yes, the previews describe both a harder target-shooting option and a redesigned shooting gallery.

Target shooting

One target-shooting variant gives Link substantially less time to hit targets. That changes the challenge from simply learning the pattern to executing quickly under pressure. The available reports do not establish the exact time limit or whether the mode is unlocked through a particular quest.

Shooting gallery progression

The shooting gallery now ramps up in difficulty instead of placing players immediately into the hardest pattern. A staged curve should make early attempts more approachable while still giving experienced players a demanding later sequence. Preview coverage does not yet document every stage, reward or score requirement.

What changed in the Forest Temple?

The Forest Temple receives the clearest structural and combat changes reported so far. These are not a wholesale replacement of the dungeon, but they alter hazards, enemy encounters, visual navigation and shortcuts.

Hazards and enemy encounters

  • The central bottomless pit is replaced by an acid pool that damages Link.
  • Two Stalfos appear after the first Stalfos is defeated, changing the rhythm of that encounter.
  • The Poe Sister fights have been changed, although the previews do not list every behavior or arena difference.

Navigation and visual landmarks

  • A lift shortcut provides a faster route through the dungeon.
  • The old map corridor has been removed.
  • The western and eastern halves are visually separated with red and blue carpeting, windows and views of the sky.

These adjustments appear designed to make orientation clearer and combat less predictable without discarding the temple’s identity. Because the reports cover previewed sections, the final version could contain additional changes elsewhere in the dungeon.

Does Link finally have a jump button?

Yes. The remake adds a dedicated jump button, along with dashing and swimming. Those abilities change how Link traverses spaces and may make movement feel less dependent on context-sensitive hops. The previews also mention gyro aiming, smoother item menus and fewer loading screens. The reports do not establish whether every original movement puzzle has been redesigned around the new abilities.

How does the remake expand dialogue and lore?

Castle Town NPC interactions are substantially expanded, giving the hub more context and optional conversations. One notable passage comes from Professor Shakashi, who explains the Sheikah’s role in Hyrule’s power structure:

“If the royal family are the light of Hyrule, then the Sheikah are the shadows that rise up behind our foes. If the King wishes it, the Sheikah see to it that any enemy of Hyrule disappears without a trace.”

The line adds political and historical texture without changing the central conflict. It also illustrates how the remake uses dialogue to deepen lore in places where the original offered fewer interactions.

Remake versus original: what is preserved and what is modernized?

Area Original Ocarina of Time Switch 2 remake
Adventure structure The familiar Hyrule journey, dungeons and progression. The same core structure with new optional activities and revised sections.
Side content and guidance Optional tasks rely heavily on memory and manual tracking. Bug-catching quest, Fairy Messages and the Threads of Time quest log.
Minigames Established target and gallery patterns. A shorter-timer target variant and a gallery that escalates difficulty.
Forest Temple Bottomless-pit centerpiece, original Stalfos sequence and map corridor. Damaging acid pool, added Stalfos, changed Poe fights, lift shortcut and revised navigation.
Movement and controls Context-sensitive movement and original item-menu handling. Jump button, dashing, swimming, gyro aiming and smoother menus.
Dialogue and presentation More limited NPC conversations and the original visual presentation. Expanded Castle Town dialogue, clearer temple visual divisions and fewer loading screens.

When does the remake release?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. Nintendo’s September Direct recap also names Zelda Notes support, Link and Zelda amiibo, and a Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2, Pro Controller and carry case. Availability can vary by region, and the previews do not confirm final product bundles or every market.

What remains unknown before launch?

The verified reports come from selected preview sections before release. They do not establish the complete late-game quest list, changes to every dungeon, final performance, the full reward structure for minigames or the complete regional availability of commemorative hardware and accessories. Claims about unseen quests or comprehensive coverage should therefore be treated as provisional until the finished game is available.
