Short answer: Nintendo’s official information does not show amiibo support in the original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The similarly named Link (Ocarina of Time) amiibo is a physical figure that has a documented use in Breath of the Wild, where it produces a random amount of meat. Its result is not an unlock in the original N64, 3DS, or other versions of Ocarina of Time.
Amiibo effects are game-specific. Depending on the Zelda title, a figure can provide materials, equipment, clothing, a companion, a dungeon room, or a cosmetic fabric. Rewards can be random, gated behind story progress, and limited to one scan per figure per Nintendo Account each day.
The important distinction: the game versus the figure
“Ocarina of Time amiibo” can mean two different things:

- Link (Ocarina of Time) amiibo: a figure modeled on Link from that era. Nintendo documents its reward in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a random amount of meat.
That distinction prevents the most common wrong answer. Scanning the figure does not unlock the Ocarina of Time outfit, a sword, Epona, or a dungeon in the original Ocarina of Time. Nintendo also warns that amiibo effects vary by game, so compatibility in one title does not establish an identical reward in another.

How Zelda amiibo rewards work
An amiibo figure stores or supplies data that a compatible game recognizes when you tap it on the console’s NFC reader. The game then applies its own reward rules. A figure may save data in one game while granting bonus content when tapped in another; those functions are separate.
Unlock the game’s amiibo feature first
In Breath of the Wild, the amiibo Rune normally becomes available roughly 45 minutes into play. In Tears of the Kingdom, the amiibo ability is likewise normally unlocked after about 45 minutes. Echoes of Wisdom makes its amiibo feature available after roughly one hour. These are approximate progression points, not guarantees for every save file.
Expect daily limits
In Breath of the Wild, each compatible figure can generally be scanned once per day per Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom instructions state: “You can use each amiibo figure once per day (per Nintendo Account).” Echoes of Wisdom allows one scan per figure per day and up to three figures per day per Nintendo Account. A unique item may require scans on multiple days.
Random does not mean broken
Many Zelda rewards are selected from a table rather than guaranteed on every tap. Nintendo specifically notes that some rewards, including Epona in applicable contexts, appear randomly. A failed attempt to receive a particular item is therefore not evidence that the figure is incompatible; follow the game’s daily limit and try again when permitted.

Breath of the Wild: rewards by Zelda figure
Nintendo’s official Zelda amiibo guide lists the following reward categories. The wording describes reward types, not a promise that every scan produces the named result.

Scanning procedure
- Play until the amiibo Rune is unlocked, usually around 45 minutes into the game.
- Open the Rune selection and choose the amiibo ability.
- Activate the ability, then place the figure on the console’s NFC reader when prompted. On compatible controllers, this is the NFC area on the right stick; on a Switch Lite, use a compatible controller with NFC.
- Collect the chest, materials, or companion produced by the scan. A daily scan limit applies per figure and Nintendo Account.
Wolf Link is the exception in feel, not in compatibility: it appears as an assisting companion rather than a normal pile of materials. Other figures can produce a chest or item bundle, and the exact contents can vary.
Tears of the Kingdom: materials, gear and paraglider fabrics
Nintendo Support says Zelda-series amiibo in Tears of the Kingdom can provide materials, weapons, and themed paraglider fabrics. Nintendo’s Explorer’s Guide adds category-level context: classic Zelda-series figures can yield ingredients or materials and legacy clothing, weapons, and shields; certain figures may also summon a familiar horse. The guide identifies the Ocarina of Time era as one of the represented Zelda eras.

That information should not be read as a guaranteed item-by-item chart for every figure. The exact drop can be random, and a unique reward may require repeated scans. A figure named for one game can therefore supply a mixture of useful resources and series-themed cosmetics rather than reproducing a complete outfit set from its source game.

Using amiibo in Tears of the Kingdom
- Progress until the amiibo ability is available, normally around 45 minutes into the game.
- Equip the ability from the ability wheel.
- Place a compatible Zelda figure on the NFC reader when the game requests it.
- Open the resulting chest or collect the materials, equipment, or fabric.
- If a specific unique reward does not appear, observe the one-scan-per-figure-per-day rule and try again on a later day.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition has an app-based tracking and bonus-use feature described in current Nintendo Support instructions. Treat that as an edition-specific function, not a rule of the standard Switch release.
Link’s Awakening on Nintendo Switch: Chamber Dungeon content
The Switch remake uses Zelda amiibo for its Chamber Dungeon rather than an ordinary material drop. Nintendo documents two distinct effects:
- Link amiibo: unlocks Shadow Link for the Chamber Dungeon.
- Up to five different Zelda-series amiibo: unlock five chambers, awarded in random order.
The five chamber names are:
- Great Fairy’s Chamber
- Moblin Chief’s Chamber
- Ball and Chain Trooper’s Chamber
- Cracked Floor Chamber
- Armos Knight’s Chamber
Zelda-series figures can also save a Chamber Dungeon and let you share it with another player’s Switch. The random-order rule concerns which of the listed chambers you receive first; it does not turn every figure into a guaranteed Shadow Link unlock.

Echoes of Wisdom: helpful items and variant outfits
In Echoes of Wisdom, Zelda-series figures provide helpful items such as smoothie ingredients or variant outfits. The feature is not available immediately: unlock it through normal play, usually about one hour into the story.

Each figure may be scanned once per day per Nintendo Account, and no more than three figures may be scanned in a day. Nintendo also notes that repeated scans may be needed for a unique reward. Consequently, having several figures does not bypass the three-figure daily account limit.

Choosing a figure for a specific goal
If you want the Ocarina of Time Link figure
Buy or borrow it for its documented use in Breath of the Wild: a random meat drop. Do not buy it expecting an original Ocarina of Time unlock. For Tears of the Kingdom, treat it as a Zelda-series figure that may produce materials, gear, or a themed fabric; Nintendo’s category-level information does not establish one guaranteed Ocarina-specific item for every scan.
If you want useful resources in an open-world game
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom use amiibo primarily for item-generation systems. Scan after unlocking the ability, collect the day’s result, and plan around random drops rather than a guaranteed farming route.
If you want challenge content or cosmetics
Choose Link’s Awakening for Chamber Dungeon rooms and Shadow Link, or Echoes of Wisdom for variant outfits and item assistance. These effects are fundamentally different from the material drops in the open-world games.

Troubleshooting an amiibo that appears not to work
- The game says the feature is unavailable: continue the story until the amiibo ability or feature unlocks.
- No special item appeared: check whether the game describes the reward as random or as requiring repeat scans.
- You scanned the same figure earlier: wait for the next daily reset under the game’s account-based limit.
- A figure works in one Zelda game but not another: this is normal; compatibility and reward tables are title-specific.
- You are using a Switch 2 instruction with the standard Switch game: separate edition-specific app or tracking features from the base-game scan rules.
- The reader does not detect the figure: confirm NFC is enabled on the controller or console setup and place the figure directly on the indicated NFC area.
What “compatible” really means
Compatibility is not a universal unlock list. It means that a particular game recognizes a figure and applies that game’s reward logic. One title may read or write amiibo data, while another grants a bonus when the same figure is tapped. The figure’s name, source game, reward type, randomization, story prerequisite, scan limit, and hardware edition all matter.
For any Zelda figure or game not listed here, check that game’s current Nintendo amiibo or Support instructions before assuming a reward. Nintendo’s own FAQ cautions that effects differ by game, which is why a figure’s documented result in Breath of the Wild cannot be transferred automatically to Ocarina of Time or another title.
Bottom line
The Link (Ocarina of Time) amiibo does not have a documented unlock in the original Ocarina of Time. In Breath of the Wild, it gives a random amount of meat.
