Zeiss Ikon AG’s 1926 place in Dresden’s camera industry gives 2026 its centenary frame. The cameras that make the anniversary worth exploring range from the 35 mm Contax rangefinder to folding Super Ikontas, twin-lens Ikoflexes and compact box cameras—but they are distinct families, not one interchangeable system.
What does the 2026 centenary mark?
It marks a century since Zeiss Ikon AG became part of Dresden’s camera-industry story in 1926. The city’s Technische Sammlungen Dresden describes the company as one of the businesses that helped make Dresden internationally known as a camera-industry center.
The anniversary is not the beginning of all Zeiss optical history, nor the start of every camera line associated with the name Contax. ZEISS traces its lens heritage further back: Paul Rudolph developed a Planar prototype in 1896, and the Tessar dates to 1902, according to the company’s history of camera and cine lenses. Those are lens milestones, separate from the 1926 company anniversary.

The Science Museum Group records an early Contax made by Zeiss Ikon in Dresden between 1932 and 1936. Its collection entry describes a solid-body camera for 35 mm film, using a coupled rangefinder and an interchangeable lens on a three-point bayonet mount. The frame size is 24 × 36 mm.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its design paired a metal, vertically running focal-plane shutter with a separate direct-vision finder. The museum says the camera was intended to provide accurate focusing, faster loading, interchangeable lenses and a higher maximum speed than the Leica II. That is the museum’s description of the design’s aims, not a claim that every Contax model or lens configuration had identical performance. The record also notes that the rangefinder on its particular example is faulty; that condition applies to the museum object, not the whole line.
ZEISS dates a high-speed Sonnar f/2 lens for Contax cameras to 1931. This is an important lens milestone just before the museum’s production dates for the camera, but it does not establish that every Contax was sold with that lens.

Which camera families show Zeiss Ikon’s range?
Contax is the most recognizable name in this anniversary story, but it represents only one kind of camera. Museum collections document several different designs and uses:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Family or example | Camera type | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Contax | 35 mm coupled-rangefinder camera | Interchangeable lens mount and separate finder; the Science Museum Group’s documented example uses 24 × 36 mm film. |
| Super Ikonta | Folding roll-film camera | A folding design, distinct from the solid-body Contax. |
| Ikoflex | Twin-lens reflex | A two-lens viewing and picture-taking arrangement, rather than the Contax rangefinder layout. |
| Box-Tengor and Baby Box | Box cameras | Simple box-bodied cameras; the Camera Heritage Museum identifies the Baby Box as a 127-film model. |
| Nettel 870 | Large-format focal-plane press camera | A substantially different scale and format from a 35 mm Contax. |
| Contaflex and Contarex | Camera families represented in museum collections | The collection records establish their place in the wider range; the cited records here do not specify a single format or design detail for each family. |
The examples are documented across the collections of Technische Sammlungen Dresden and the Camera Heritage Museum. They are representative objects, not a complete company catalogue or exhaustive chronology.

How should you compare these cameras?
Start with the camera’s actual model and purpose, rather than treating “Zeiss” as a guarantee of one format, lens mount or shooting experience. The museum examples illustrate why:
- Camera type: A rangefinder, folding roll-film camera, twin-lens reflex, box camera and press camera work differently and suit different preferences.
- Film format: The Contax example takes 35 mm film, while the Baby Box example takes 127 film and the Nettel 870 is identified as large-format. Check the exact model before buying film or accessories.
- Focusing and lenses: The Contax record describes a coupled rangefinder and interchangeable lens mount. Do not assume that arrangement applies to other Zeiss Ikon families.
- Portability and use: A folding camera, a box camera and a press camera differ in size and handling by design; choose based on the particular camera, not just the maker’s name.
- Period and production context: Zeiss Ikon’s 1926 Dresden milestone, the 1930s Contax example and later camera-brand partnerships belong to different historical chapters.
How did the Zeiss camera story continue?
Later developments should not be conflated with the original Dresden company. ZEISS dates the start of its partnership with Kyocera, which had acquired Yashica, to 1983. That partnership is a later chapter in branded camera history, distinct from Zeiss Ikon AG’s 1926 place in Dresden.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The optics story also continued beyond the early camera families. ZEISS says its camera lenses received three Academy Awards in the Science and Engineering category—in 1987, 1999 and 2012. These awards are attributed by ZEISS to its camera lenses, not to the 1926 founding milestone or to one particular Zeiss Ikon camera.
Where can you see Zeiss Ikon cameras today?
Technische Sammlungen Dresden says its collections include around 4,000 cameras and 550 film cameras. That breadth makes a museum collection useful for seeing how many designs sat alongside Contax, from folding and twin-lens cameras to boxes and other formats.

If you are considering using an old camera, verify its exact model, film format and condition before sourcing supplies. A camera’s historical design does not establish that an individual example is currently working; the Science Museum Group’s faulty-rangefinder note, for instance, describes only its own Contax object. Film compatibility and mechanical condition are separate questions.
