Shielded Zcash addresses (z-addresses) hide shielded addresses and transaction values from public blockchain observers. Transparent addresses (t-addresses) publish the address and value information on-chain. The privacy result depends on the entire transaction path: a shielded-to-shielded payment offers the strongest on-chain privacy, while shielding (transparent-to-shielded) and deshielding (shielded-to-transparent) leave the transparent side visible. Fees, wallet behavior, network data and anything you disclose can still create identifying links.
What is the difference between shielded and transparent Zcash?
Zcash has two address families that correspond to different visibility models:
- Transparent addresses (t-addresses): Their addresses, transaction amounts and relevant transaction relationships are recorded for public inspection, broadly like a Bitcoin-style transfer.
- Shielded addresses (z-addresses): The shielded addresses and values sent to or from them are concealed from ordinary blockchain observers, while the network still verifies that the transaction follows protocol rules.
This is a privacy distinction, not a promise of total anonymity or complete device security. A transaction that touches both address types protects only the shielded side. The Zcash glossary puts the boundary plainly: a mixed transaction “only protects the data associated with the shielded address.”
What observers can see for each transaction path
The same wallet may perform four materially different kinds of transfer. Classifying the path is more useful than simply asking whether a wallet “supports Zcash privacy.”

| Transaction path | Publicly visible | Privacy result |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent-to-transparent | Both transparent addresses, values and the public transaction record | Public transaction details; no address-level shielding |
| Shielded-to-shielded | The transaction record and fee; shielded address and value details are concealed | Strongest on-chain privacy among these paths, subject to metadata, network and disclosure risks |
| Transparent-to-shielded (shielding) | Information associated with the transparent input and sender side | The shielded recipient data is protected, but the public source and amount relationship on the transparent side remains observable |
| Shielded-to-transparent (deshielding) | Information associated with the transparent output and recipient side | Shielded sender details are protected, but the public destination and output-side information remain observable |
Calling a shielding or deshielding transaction “fully private” is therefore inaccurate. If an exchange, merchant or other service requires a transparent address, that endpoint creates a public connection even when the other endpoint is shielded.
How shielded addresses provide privacy
A shielded payment is constructed so that the chain can verify validity without publishing the shielded addresses and values in readable form. Public nodes can confirm that funds are authorized and that protocol rules are satisfied, but a normal chain observer cannot read the shielded sender, recipient or amount from the transaction record alone.
In a shielded-to-shielded transfer, neither endpoint is presented as a public address-value pair. This prevents the straightforward balance tracing available for transparent transfers. It does not prevent every form of analysis: timing, transaction identifiers, counterparties, network observations and information voluntarily released by participants can still produce correlations.

When funds enter the shielded pool from a transparent address, the transparent input remains visible. The shielded portion is protected, but the public side can reveal when value moved into or out of the private pool and which transparent address was involved.
Are Zcash shielded addresses private?
They are private against ordinary on-chain inspection of the shielded address and value fields, but “private” does not mean every surrounding fact disappears. Zcash’s own privacy guidance says that privacy depends on information leaked while a transaction is created and while it is broadcast for inclusion in the blockchain.
Fees remain public
Transaction fees are visible for all Zcash transactions, including shielded payments. An unusual fee choice can become a linking clue when combined with timing or other observations. Official guidance recommends letting a privacy-focused wallet select fees rather than manually choosing an unusual value.

Network metadata can identify activity
The Zcash network uses IP addresses for node communication; the protocol itself does not conceal a user’s IP address. Someone who can observe network traffic may correlate a broadcast with later blockchain activity, whether the transaction is shielded or transparent. A shielded address therefore does not replace network-level privacy measures.
People and services can create the link
Transaction IDs, amounts known to a counterparty, payment times, invoices, exchange records and other off-chain information can connect activity that the chain does not display directly. Sharing a viewing key or payment disclosure can also reveal selected details. Once a recipient, merchant or auditor knows those details, the privacy outcome includes that disclosure.
Changing transparent addresses is not enough
Using a new transparent address for every payment can improve basic account organization, but it does not make transparent activity private. Zcash’s feature UX guidance warns that address rotation alone can create a false sense of privacy because the transparent records and their values remain public and may still be linked.
Privacy versus security: what the address type does not protect
Shielding conceals transaction data; it does not automatically secure the wallet, computer or recovery material. Both address types depend on the same operational foundations:
- Seed and key protection: Anyone who obtains the wallet’s spending keys may control funds, regardless of whether those funds are in a transparent or shielded pool.
- Wallet software: Bugs, unsupported transaction types, poor randomness, malicious extensions or an outdated implementation can undermine safety even when the protocol’s privacy design is sound.
- Transaction construction: The wallet decides which pool and address type to use, how change is handled and when a fee is selected. Those choices affect linkability.
- Broadcast behavior: The device and network used to send the transaction can expose timing or IP information.
- Counterparty records: A merchant, exchange or employer may retain identity, invoice and payment data outside the blockchain.
Use “shielded” to describe the visibility of protected transaction fields, not as a guarantee of account, endpoint or network security.
Wallet support and defaults determine what you can actually do
Wallets differ significantly. Some support shielded transactions and select them by default; some expose a choice between transparent and shielded pools; others support only transparent addresses. A wallet that displays a z-address somewhere in its interface is not necessarily shielding every payment.

Before moving funds, verify these capabilities in the wallet’s current documentation:
- Can it receive and send shielded funds, or only display them?
- Does it support shielded-by-default payments?
- Will it automatically shield transparent funds, and under what conditions?
- Can it send to a recipient’s shielded address, transparent address or unified address?
- How does it select fees and handle change?
- Can it export viewing keys or payment disclosures when accounting or proof of payment is required?
- Which Zcash network and protocol version does the release support?
Consumer guidance recommends looking specifically for shielded-by-default support when confidentiality is the objective. Defaults matter because a user can unintentionally make a transparent payment simply by accepting the wallet’s standard route.
Unified addresses: easier routing, not automatic privacy
Unified addresses combine multiple receiver types into one address format. A compatible wallet can use the receiver it supports, while another wallet may choose a different receiver or require a separate address. This reduces the need to decide which address string to copy, but it does not guarantee that every payment is shielded.

Some wallets pair unified addresses with autoshielding, moving incoming transparent funds into a shielded pool according to the wallet’s rules. Treat that as a usability feature: check when the conversion occurs, whether a transparent intermediate transaction is visible, and whether the recipient’s wallet can use the shielded receiver. The address format alone cannot answer those questions.
How to make a more private Zcash payment
The exact buttons differ by wallet, so use this process rather than assuming a particular interface:
- Confirm shielded capability. In the wallet’s receive and send documentation, verify support for shielded transactions and identify whether the wallet is shielded by default or transparent by default.
- Choose the destination deliberately. Ask the recipient for a shielded address or a compatible unified address when the payment should avoid a transparent endpoint. A transparent destination necessarily makes the output-side information public.
- Check the funding pool. If the wallet is spending from a transparent balance, the initial shielding step exposes the transparent source. For the strongest on-chain privacy, use funds already held in the shielded pool and send shielded-to-shielded.
- Let the wallet choose a normal fee. Avoid manually selecting an unusual fee that could make the transaction easier to correlate with other activity.
- Review the transaction summary. Confirm which address type is used for the input and output, whether change is transparent or shielded, and whether the wallet warns that the operation is shielding or deshielding.
- Broadcast with network awareness. Understand that the network connection used by the wallet can expose an IP address and broadcast timing. Shielding does not remove that layer of metadata.
- Share only necessary proof. If a payer, auditor or employer needs verification, use the narrowest available disclosure rather than publishing a viewing key or transaction details broadly.
Operational requirements can force a transparent route. For example, ZIP 320 specifies an address type for transparent-source-only payments. In that situation, explain to the recipient which side is public instead of treating the transaction as equivalent to a fully shielded transfer.

Selective disclosure: proving a payment without publishing everything
Shielded data is not inherently unauditable. Zcash viewing keys can grant read access without granting spending authority, allowing an auditor or wallet operator to inspect information permitted by the key. A viewing key is therefore a sensitive read credential: whoever receives it may learn more than the single fact you intended to prove, depending on its scope.

ZIP 311 specifies a mechanism that can let a sender prove selected details of a shielded payment, such as information needed for proof of payment, without making every shielded transaction detail public. The ZIP 311 page identifies the specification as Draft, so availability depends on current wallet implementation; do not promise that any particular wallet supports it without checking that wallet’s documentation.
Before disclosing anything, decide exactly what the recipient must verify: payment existence, recipient, amount, memo or time. Provide the smallest credential or disclosure that meets that purpose, and treat exported keys and disclosures as confidential records.

| Situation | Prefer | Reason and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Public accounting, donation tracking or an address that anyone must inspect | Transparent address | Balances and transfers are easy for anyone to verify, but they are also permanently public |
| Payment where sender, recipient and amount should not be publicly readable | Shielded-to-shielded | Best on-chain privacy, subject to fee, network, timing and disclosure caveats |
| Moving funds from a transparent service into private storage | Transparent-to-shielded | Protects the shielded balance after entry, but the source-side activity remains public |
| Paying a service that accepts only transparent outputs | Shielded-to-transparent | Required for compatibility, but the destination and output-side information are public |
| Using one address string with wallets that support different receiver types | Unified address | Improves usability; the actual receiver selected still depends on wallet support and policy |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“One shielded endpoint makes the whole payment private.”
Correction: Identify the transparent endpoint. A mixed transaction protects only the shielded address-associated data; the transparent side remains observable.
“A new t-address removes the link to my old one.”
Correction: Address rotation does not hide transparent values or transaction history. Use a shielded-to-shielded path when the goal is to avoid public address and value tracing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“The fee does not matter because the amount is shielded.”
Correction: Fees are public. Let the wallet select a conventional fee and avoid creating distinctive patterns.

“A viewing key is as safe as a spending key.”
Correction: A viewing key may not authorize spending, but it grants read access. Share it only with a party that should see the associated information.
“My wallet supports Zcash, so it supports private Zcash.”
Correction: Check whether it can create shielded transactions, whether shielding is enabled by default and whether the wallet silently falls back to transparent addresses for a particular recipient or fee policy.
“Shielded means my IP address is hidden.”
Correction: The Zcash network uses IP addresses for node communication. Address privacy and network privacy are separate problems.

Protocol and documentation context
The Zcash documentation search identifies documentation version 6.12.2, while the protocol specification result identifies version 2025.6.3-179-g6025f3, labeled NU6.1. Wallet behavior can change independently of those document versions, so verify support against the wallet release you are actually using.
ZIP 315, “Best Practices for Wallet Implementations,” summarizes the core principle: “The privacy provided by a Zcash transaction depends on the information leaked in the creation of that transaction and the process of it being broadcast for inclusion in the block chain.” That is why address choice, pool selection, fee policy, disclosure practice and network conditions all belong in a privacy decision.
Bottom line for choosing between z-addresses and t-addresses
Choose a transparent address when public verifiability and broad compatibility are more important than confidentiality. Choose a shielded-to-shielded payment when you want the strongest protection available against ordinary on-chain inspection. Use shielding and deshielding with the understanding that the transparent side remains public. Finally, evaluate the wallet’s defaults and your broadcast and disclosure practices: the address type is the foundation of Zcash privacy, not the entire privacy system.
