Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis was a small, flightless avialan that ran through Late Jurassic China on bird-like legs but carried a dinosaur-style sickle claw. The fossil shows that early bird-line dinosaurs were already exploring ground-running, meat-eating lifestyles rather than following one straight path toward modern flight.

What was Yuezhuornis?

Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis is a newly named avialan—a member of the early bird lineage within theropod dinosaurs. It is not a modern bird, but it belongs on the evolutionary branch that eventually produced birds. The animal is known from specimen IVPP V34427, held by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

It lived approximately 150–148 million years ago during the Late Jurassic, in the Zhenghe Fauna of what is now southeastern China. Liming Xu, Min Wang, Ganmin Lin and colleagues described it in Nature on 14 October 2026.

Why scientists think it could not fly

Short forelimbs

The fossil’s forelimbs are markedly short. In many early flying paravians, relatively long forelimbs helped support wings and generate lift. Yuezhuornis instead has a body plan more consistent with moving over the ground than launching into sustained flight.

Comparisons with living birds

A comparative analysis reported by Live Science examined limb proportions across 377 living bird species. Yuezhuornis clustered most closely with terrestrial birds rather than flying specialists. The Nature study describes these phylogenetically informed comparisons as “strong evidence for a terrestrial, flightless lifestyle.”

That conclusion is an anatomical inference, not an observation of behavior. Fossils cannot show whether an individual ever made a short hop, but the combination of forelimb reduction and terrestrial limb proportions indicates that powered flight was not its normal form of locomotion.

A small runner with a dangerous foot

Size and proportions

Min Wang told Live Science that the animal was probably about the size of a crow. The reported mass estimate is approximately 1.8 pounds (0.8 kilograms). Its compact build would have suited a quick ground hunter better than a large, soaring or tree-dependent bird.

The hyperextensible second toe

The second pedal digit was hyperextensible, meaning it could be held in a raised position and driven downward. Its large, curved claw resembles the “sickle claw” associated with deinonychosaur predatory dinosaurs. This feature could have helped the animal seize, pin or restrain prey.

Evidence for a meat-based diet

Slender cranial elements and sparsely spaced teeth add to the predatory picture. The teeth could have gripped flesh, while the claw provided a close-range weapon. Scientists therefore interpret Yuezhuornis as a small carnivore or meat-eating opportunist, rather than a seed-eating or purely insectivorous bird relative.

Why it looks like both a bird and a dinosaur

The species has a mosaic of traits. Its avialan anatomy places it on the early bird branch, while several details remain strongly dinosaur-like. The authors identify a combination of avialan and troodontid-like cranial characters alongside derived postcranial features.

Wang summarized the blend this way: “Its key anatomical features are the combination of dinosaurs’ and birds’ features: for instance, its teeth, pectoral gird, and especially the hyperextensible, ‘sickle-clawed’ second pedal digit are similar to that of dinosaurs.”

The pectoral girdle and other bird-line features show that “bird” and “dinosaur” were not mutually exclusive categories during this period. Early avialans could retain ancestral predatory equipment while experimenting with body designs that no longer emphasized flight.

How it changes the story of early bird evolution

Flight was not the only evolutionary destination

A simplified account of bird evolution imagines a steady progression from small feathered dinosaurs to increasingly efficient fliers. Yuezhuornis complicates that picture. Its short forelimbs and running adaptations indicate that at least some early avialans moved away from a flight-centered body plan.

Different niches existed at the same time

The fossil provides evidence that flightless forms lived alongside flying relatives during the Jurassic. Nature’s accompanying News & Views interpretation presents this as a case of ecological coexistence: early birds were diversifying into several roles instead of occupying one narrow pathway.

The important evolutionary signal is the branching itself. During the initial diversification of birds, lineages explored terrestrial running, predation and other specialized lifestyles while flight-capable species continued to exist. Modern birds represent one surviving outcome of that experimentation, not the only form those early lineages tried.

Yuezhuornis compared with a typical early flying avialan

Feature Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis Flight-adapted early avialan pattern
Forelimbs Markedly short; consistent with reduced flight function Generally longer, providing more area for lift-producing wings
Overall locomotion Terrestrial, ground-running lifestyle supported by limb proportions Greater emphasis on powered flight, gliding or aerial maneuvering
Feeding evidence Sparsely spaced teeth and slender cranial elements suggest meat eating Diet varied among lineages; not defined by a sickle-clawed second toe
Foot weapon Hyperextensible, curved second digit with a sickle-like claw Less specialized for the deinonychosaur-style grasping strike
Evolutionary significance Shows an early avialan experimenting with flightlessness and predation Represents the aerial specialization that eventually became dominant among surviving birds

What the fossil can—and cannot—tell us

  • Well supported: the specimen’s age, locality, short forelimbs, terrestrial limb proportions and distinctive second toe.
  • Strongly inferred: a flightless, ground-running lifestyle and a diet that included meat.
  • Still reconstructed: exact hunting behavior, speed, feather arrangement and whether it could make brief, unpowered hops.

Those limits do not weaken the central finding. Multiple independent anatomical signals point in the same direction: this was an early bird-line dinosaur adapted for life on the ground, equipped with a predatory foot rather than a wing-first body plan.

The takeaway

Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis was a crow-sized, approximately 0.8-kilogram Late Jurassic avialan from southeastern China. Short forelimbs and terrestrial proportions indicate that it did not normally fly. Teeth, predatory cranial features and a hyperextensible sickle-clawed second toe suggest a small carnivore. Its anatomy demonstrates that early bird evolution was an adaptive radiation, with flightless hunters living beside flying relatives long before the modern bird blueprint became familiar.
