Short answer: YouTube evaluates sexual or nude game footage on three separate tracks: whether the video violates Community Guidelines, whether it is age-restricted, and whether it is eligible for advertising. A fourth issue sits outside YouTube’s content rules: the game publisher must grant you suitable commercial-use rights if you want to monetize gameplay.
Sex scenes, sexualized characters, nudity, mods, thumbnails, titles, audio and surrounding context can all change the result. The official examples are illustrative rather than a guaranteed frame-count test, so assess the complete upload package instead of relying on a single blur, crop or short duration.
The three YouTube decisions creators must separate
A game scene can be acceptable under one policy layer and still create a problem under another. YouTube’s gaming and monetization guidance, Nudity and sexual content policy and age-restriction guidance address different outcomes.

These decisions are independent. A video can remain online but be age-restricted, remain online with limited advertising, or be removed for a Community Guidelines violation. Conversely, compliance with the sexual-content rules does not by itself prove that a publisher has granted commercial-use permission.

What Community Guidelines prohibit in game footage
YouTube’s sexual-content policy applies to fictional and computer-generated material as well as real people. It identifies sexualized nudity intended to gratify viewers, sexual acts or fetishes presented for gratification, non-consensual sexualization, and prolonged or non-consensual focus on sexual body parts as prohibited examples. The policy also names video-game content that has been developed or modified (“modded”) for sexual gratification or unwanted sexualisation.
That means the fact that a scene comes from a mature-rated game, is rendered rather than filmed, or is part of a fictional story does not create an automatic exception. YouTube may consider context in the video, title and description, and official third-party ratings can be relevant to educational, documentary, scientific or artistic material. Those factors help explain a legitimate purpose; they do not excuse content that otherwise violates the policy.
How intent and presentation matter
Review what a viewer is encouraged to notice. A brief, non-sexual story moment framed like the rest of the game is different from a deliberate camera hold on breasts, genitals or buttocks, repeated replay of a sex act, or editing that turns a plot event into erotic material. Audio matters too: sexual sounds, dialogue and descriptive commentary can change how the scene is understood even when the image is partly hidden.

Sexually modified games and mods
Mods that add explicit acts, remove clothing to make characters sexualized, or direct the camera toward unwanted sexualisation create a higher-risk presentation. YouTube’s policy specifically includes game content developed or modified for sexual gratification, so “the base game did not show this” is not a reliable defense.
How gaming videos are classified for ads
The official gaming monetization page says its examples are existing advertiser-friendly guidelines applied to real or computer-generated subjects. The assessment covers visual and audio content, text, thumbnails and titles. The categories below are examples, not promises about an individual upload.

YouTube warns that age-restricted videos may still show ads, but advertiser preferences can leave them with limited or no earnings. Therefore, “no ads” in the table describes ad suitability, not an automatic removal decision, and “can earn ads” is not a guarantee that every upload will monetize.

Does blurring nudity make gameplay safe?
No. Blurring or pixelation can hide detail from a viewer, but YouTube’s gaming ad examples specifically list recognizable pixelated or blurred sexual body parts as a no-ad presentation. A censor bar is therefore not a guaranteed route to full monetization.
Blurring also does not answer the Community Guidelines question. YouTube can still evaluate the underlying scene, the reason it was included, the camera’s focus, the editing and the surrounding audio. If the upload is built around sexual gratification or unwanted sexualisation, obscuring the image may not cure the violation. Treat a blur as an editing choice, not a safe harbor.
Titles, thumbnails, audio and descriptions are part of the review
The gaming guidance expressly covers text, thumbnails and titles as well as gameplay. A neutral video can become less advertiser-friendly when its thumbnail isolates a character’s breasts or buttocks, its title uses explicit sexual wording, or its description and links add sexual emphasis. Conversely, clear context can help establish that an artistic, educational or documentary use is not intended for gratification.

- Use a factual title that identifies the game, mission or analysis instead of sensational sexual wording.
- Choose a representative thumbnail; do not crop a non-focal scene into a sexualized close-up.
- Review spoken commentary, subtitles, on-screen text and sound effects for explicit descriptions or sexual audio.
- Check links and description text for sexual material that could make the package appear intentionally provocative.
Context is considered alongside the content; it cannot override a prohibited act or make highly sexualized packaging harmless.
Age restriction, removal and monetization: a practical distinction
YouTube’s age-restriction help page identifies sexually suggestive content and focused graphic imagery, including video-game imagery, as possible grounds for restricting viewers. Age restriction is not itself a finding that the video violated Community Guidelines.

Removal is the Community Guidelines outcome for prohibited material and can involve channel enforcement. Advertiser classification is a separate commercial decision. The same upload can therefore be:

YouTube does not publish a universal number of seconds, frames or screen-area percentage that makes nudity acceptable. Decisions depend on focus, intent, arousal, context and the complete presentation.

Use this sequence before publishing a video that contains sexual or nude game material:
- Inventory every occurrence. Watch the final edit for cutscenes, gameplay, menus, loading screens, subtitles, sound effects and replay footage. Note nudity, sexual acts, sexual dialogue, implied sex and fetish references.
- Classify the purpose. Ask whether the scene is necessary to explain the story, mechanics or criticism, or whether the edit lingers to invite sexual attention. Remove gratuitous replays and focal camera holds.
- Check the source and modifications. Identify whether the material is original game content or a mod. Sexually modified content aimed at gratification carries a specific policy risk.
- Review the frame and soundtrack. Look for exposed or recognizable sexual body parts, sexual fluids, sustained touching, erotic camera movement and sexual sounds. Obscuring detail does not guarantee ad eligibility.
- Audit the packaging. Inspect the title, thumbnail, description, tags, links and on-screen text. Eliminate highly sexualized wording or imagery that is not essential to the video’s purpose.
- Choose the narrowest necessary edit. Cut the scene, shorten a non-essential shot, change the framing or mute explicit audio when doing so preserves the editorial point without turning the moment into a focal attraction.
- Separate policy from rights. Read the game publisher’s license or creator program terms and retain evidence of commercial-use permission. Passing YouTube’s sexual-content review does not supply a publisher license.
- Set expectations for revenue. Treat the ad examples as risk indicators, not a guarantee. A video can be allowed and still receive limited or no ads, or be age-restricted with earnings affected by advertiser preferences.
Publisher permission is a separate monetization requirement
YouTube’s video game and software content guidance states: “Video game content may be monetized depending on the commercial use rights granted to you by licenses of video game publishers.” A publisher’s license agreement or creator policy may authorize commercial use; without appropriate rights, YouTube says gameplay use must be minimal, and step-by-step commentary tied to the action may qualify when it provides instructional or educational value.

This rights analysis does not decide whether nudity is allowed, age-restricted or advertiser-friendly. Keep the two checks separate: first assess the content and presentation under YouTube rules, then confirm that the publisher permits the commercial use you intend.

What to do when the policy result is not what you expected
Read the exact notice attached to the video or channel action and identify which layer it addresses: Community Guidelines, age restriction or advertising. Do not assume that an ad-status decision proves a Community Guidelines violation, or that an allowed video has a right to monetize the game. Recheck the current official pages before making a new edit because YouTube says the gaming examples are guidance derived from its advertiser-friendly rules and may be revised.
The safest editorial approach is to preserve the video’s informational purpose while removing sexual emphasis: avoid gratification-oriented framing, use neutral packaging, limit explicit audio and confirm publisher rights. When the sexual material is the attraction rather than a necessary part of commentary, expect a substantially higher risk of age restriction, no ads or removal.
