YouTube’s chat-style search feature, called Ask YouTube, is rolling out to mobile. In the YouTube app, tap Search, then Ask, and enter a question. The feature turns a query into a conversation with a response that can combine text and video content, but access is still expanding gradually.
What Ask YouTube does
Ask YouTube is a conversational option alongside standard search. YouTube says it uses real-time information from the web and YouTube content to answer complex questions and help viewers explore a topic. A response may combine text, long-form videos, Shorts, and relevant clips. Viewers can open clips in the response, see each video’s title and channel, choose suggested refinements, or ask a follow-up.
For example, YouTube gives the prompt “plan a 3-day roadtrip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara”. The response may organize an itinerary around stops and local tips, with video material. That is YouTube’s illustration of the feature, not a guarantee that every answer will be complete or accurate. YouTube Help
How to open Ask YouTube on a phone
- Open the YouTube app and tap Search.
- Tap Ask.
- Type a question or prompt in natural language.
- Review the response and any text or video clips it includes.
- Choose a suggested refinement or enter a follow-up question to continue.
YouTube’s August 12, 2026 update described the mobile rollout and directed viewers to open the app’s search bar and tap Ask. The company also described the feature as an experiment for signed-in viewers aged 13 or older, in English, in the United States, across desktop, mobile, and TV. That was a dated rollout statement, not a promise that every eligible account would immediately see the option. TeamYouTube update

What YouTube says about conversation privacy
YouTube says Ask YouTube conversations are not used to show ads. Its Help page also says conversations are disconnected from the user’s Google Account before reviewers see them, and that automated tools remove personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers. Those statements describe the protections YouTube specifies for this feature; they do not establish how every aspect of data handling works. YouTube Help
