Short answer: YouTube Music is introducing a prominent label on the player for songs created primarily with generative AI. Spotify uses two separate signals: AI Credits for disclosed AI contributions to a track and an AI Persona badge for an artist identity that appears AI-generated. On Spotify, no AI credit is not proof that a song was made entirely by people.

The services therefore answer different questions. YouTube Music aims to tell you about the track’s overall level of generative-AI involvement, while Spotify records specific creative roles when an artist, label or distributor supplies that information and separately identifies apparently synthetic artist identities.

At a glance: what the labels mean

The most important difference is the unit being labeled. YouTube Music’s new signal is primarily track-level: it tells listeners that a song was created primarily with generative AI. Spotify’s AI Credits are contribution-level: they can identify AI use in vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, production or post-production. Spotify’s AI Persona badge is neither a track-production credit nor a claim that a real artist used no AI tools; it describes the apparent authenticity of the artist identity presented to the public.

Question YouTube Music Spotify
Where will a listener see the signal? Directly on the song’s player page; tapping the label opens more information. AI Credits appear in Song Credits. AI Persona appears beside an artist name on profiles, Search, Now Playing and playlist track rows.
What is being labeled? Overall generative-AI involvement in the track: Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI or No Gen AI in partner metadata. Disclosed AI roles in a track, plus a separate badge for an apparently AI-generated artist identity.
Where does the data come from? Declarations from music partners combined with YouTube detection signals. Artist, label and distributor disclosures for credits; self-disclosure or Spotify review for AI Persona.
How detailed is it? Broad track-level categories. Role-level credits such as vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, production and post-production.
What does a missing signal mean? Omitted partner metadata can remain unknown, although YouTube may infer a result from other signals. No AI Credit does not establish that no AI was used, because disclosure and distributor support are incomplete.

How YouTube Music labels AI-generated songs

The player-level label

On October 14, 2026, YouTube announced that YouTube Music was rolling out labels to make it easier to identify songs created primarily with generative AI. The label is placed on the player page rather than being hidden in a catalog field. Select or tap it to open additional information about why the song received the designation.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This placement is designed for the moment when you are listening. You do not have to open an artist profile or navigate through several credit menus to discover that a track has been identified as primarily generative-AI-created. Availability can vary while the rollout expands, so a player without the label should not automatically be read as a declaration that the song was made without AI.

Three partner metadata choices

YouTube’s music-partner workflow accepts generative-AI metadata through DDEX ERN 4.3.2 or later, CSV templates, or YouTube Studio. Partners can classify the content using three values:

  • Fully Gen AI: all content was created using generative AI.
  • Partly Gen AI: some, but not all, of the content was created using generative AI.
  • No Gen AI: no content was created using generative AI.

These values describe the submitted content, not an artistic judgment about whether a song sounds synthetic. A partner choosing “Partly Gen AI” is saying that generative AI was involved in a portion of the content, even if the finished recording also contains substantial human performance.

Examples of “fully” and “partly” generated content

YouTube’s guidance gives concrete examples that help explain the boundary:

  • A text-prompt music generator creates a complete track that is downloaded and distributed. That is an example of Fully Gen AI.
  • An AI-generated bassline or string part is combined with live vocals or live instruments. That is an example of Partly Gen AI.
  • Human audio is paired with AI-generated music-video visuals. YouTube’s example treats this as Partly Gen AI, because the associated content includes a generative-AI component even though the audio itself is human-made.

The third example matters when you are interpreting a label in the broader YouTube ecosystem: a generative visual can affect the disclosure status of a release even when AI did not create the recorded vocal or instrumental performance.

What happens when metadata is missing?

YouTube says an omitted GenAI value is treated as unknown unless other signals support a determination. “Unknown” is different from “No Gen AI.” It means the partner did not supply a usable value and the available evidence did not establish one at the time.

YouTube is combining partner declarations with its own detection tools. That means the service can potentially identify a label even when a partner’s metadata is incomplete, but the existence of detection signals does not make every unlabeled track a verified human-only recording. Detection is an additional input, not a guarantee that all AI use can be discovered.

How this relates to YouTube’s wider disclosure policy

YouTube’s broader disclosure policy lists AI-generated music among the realistic or meaningfully AI-generated content that creators must disclose. Labels can appear in the video player, and YouTube may apply them automatically using internal systems, C2PA metadata or tools built into YouTube’s own generative-AI products. The music-player label is therefore part of a wider effort to attach understandable disclosure to synthetic or materially altered media.

How Spotify labels AI involvement

AI Credits: specific creative contributions

Spotify’s AI Credits system is based on disclosures submitted by the people and companies delivering music. In a September 25, 2025 announcement, Spotify said it was supporting a DDEX industry standard for AI disclosures in music credits. When a label, distributor or other music partner supplies the information, Spotify can display the AI contribution associated with a particular role.

Possible roles include:

  • Vocals
  • Lyrics
  • Instrumentation
  • Production
  • Post-production

A credit can therefore be narrower than “this song is AI-generated.” For example, a release could disclose AI-assisted post-production while crediting human singers and instrumentalists. Another could identify generated vocals but list human-written lyrics and human production. The credit tells you what was disclosed, not that every part of the track came from the same process.

Where to find an AI Credit

Open the song’s Song Credits view. Spotify’s April 16 beta update said artists who disclose AI use can see these details in Song Credits on mobile. The exact display can depend on the information delivered for that release and on whether the relevant distributor supports the disclosure fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spotify reported that tens of thousands of AI credits were being submitted daily by artists using AI in their creative process in 2025. That volume shows that the system is intended for ordinary, partial and assistive uses as well as tracks generated almost entirely by software.

Why an uncredited track is not proof of human-only production

Spotify states the limitation plainly: “Because we depend on artist disclosure, the absence of a credit doesn’t mean AI wasn’t used.” Not every distributor enables the disclosure fields, and an artist or label may fail to provide them even when AI was part of the workflow.

Use a missing credit as “no disclosed AI contribution,” not as “confirmed no AI.” This distinction is especially important for older releases, music delivered through a distributor that has not implemented the relevant DDEX fields, and tracks where an artist used AI in a role they did not report.

AI Persona: a separate identity badge

Spotify’s AI Persona badge addresses the artist identity shown to listeners. Spotify announced the feature on August 11, 2026. A badge can be self-disclosed or applied after Spotify review when the profile’s public identity, name, imagery or photorealistic presentation appears AI-generated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The badge may appear beside the artist name in several locations:

  • The artist profile
  • Search results
  • The Now Playing view
  • Playlist track rows

Spotify describes this as an identity signal, not a production credit. Its stated principle is that the badge is about the artist’s public identity, not how the music was made. A fictional or synthetic performer may have an AI Persona badge even when the service does not provide a detailed AI role credit for each track.

Conversely, a real-person artist who uses an AI tool to create a bassline, vocal effect or other musical element does not receive an AI Persona badge merely for doing so. That use belongs, if disclosed, in AI Credits.

YouTube Music and Spotify use different evidence models

Both services depend partly on information supplied upstream, but they handle uncertainty differently. YouTube combines partner metadata with detection signals. Spotify’s track credits depend on disclosure from artists, labels and distributors; its additional review process applies to the apparent identity of an artist profile, not to every hidden production decision.

Evidence question YouTube Music Spotify
Can a partner declare the level of AI use? Yes. Partners can submit Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI or No Gen AI through DDEX ERN 4.3.2+, CSV or YouTube Studio. Yes, for specific AI roles when the delivery partner supports the credit fields.
Does the service add its own signal? Yes. YouTube says it combines declarations with detection tools and can use internal systems, C2PA metadata or its own generative-AI tools for broader labels. Spotify reviews profiles for possible AI Persona status, but AI Credits themselves remain disclosure-based.
What does “nothing shown” mean? It may mean No Gen AI, unknown metadata, a rollout or display limitation, or no determination from available signals. It means no visible disclosed credit or badge in that context; it does not prove a human-only process.
What is the main listener benefit? Fast, prominent awareness while the track is playing. More precise information about disclosed roles, plus a separate warning about synthetic artist identity.

How to check a song as a listener

On YouTube Music

  1. Start the song and open its full player page.
  2. Look for the generative-AI disclosure near the player information.
  3. Tap the label to read the expanded explanation.
  4. Interpret the result as track-level information. A “Partly” determination does not mean every vocal, instrument or lyric was generated.
  5. If there is no label, treat the status as unresolved rather than as proof of human-only creation. YouTube may have no partner value, may still be expanding the rollout, or may have no signal strong enough to make a determination.

On Spotify

  1. Play the track and open its Song Credits view.
  2. Check whether an AI contribution is listed for vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, production or post-production.
  3. Return to the track row or Now Playing screen and inspect the artist name for an AI Persona badge.
  4. Open the artist profile and Search results if you need to confirm that the badge follows the identity across Spotify surfaces.
  5. Record the distinction: an AI Credit describes disclosed work on the track; an AI Persona badge describes the apparent artist identity.
  6. If neither appears, conclude only that Spotify is showing no disclosed credit or identity badge in that context.

How artists and distributors disclose AI use

YouTube delivery paths

A music partner can pass GenAI metadata through DDEX ERN 4.3.2 or later, use YouTube’s CSV template, or enter the information in YouTube Studio. The partner must choose the category that matches the delivered content. If the release includes an AI-generated component alongside human material, “Partly Gen AI” is the relevant example in YouTube’s guidance; selecting “No Gen AI” would not describe that content accurately.

Spotify delivery paths

Spotify’s AI Credits depend on the artist, label or distributor supplying role-level information using supported industry fields. Artists should ask their distributor whether it accepts the DDEX AI-disclosure data and whether the distributor passes it through to Spotify. If the distributor does not support the fields, a missing credit can reflect a delivery limitation rather than a statement about the creative process.

Identity disclosure is different from production disclosure

An artist deciding whether to disclose AI-created profile imagery or a fictional performer identity is addressing the AI Persona system. An artist reporting an AI-generated harmony, lyric draft or instrumental part is addressing AI Credits. The two disclosures can coexist: a synthetic artist identity can have detailed track credits, and a human artist can have AI Credits without an AI Persona badge.

Common situations and the correct interpretation

What you see What it supports What it does not prove
YouTube Music says Fully Gen AI The partner or YouTube’s signals identify the delivered content as entirely generative-AI-created. It does not describe every legal, editorial or ownership question about the release.
YouTube Music says Partly Gen AI At least part of the content includes generative AI. It does not tell you which exact stem, lyric, visual or production step was generated unless the expanded information does.
YouTube Music shows no label No visible determination is available on that player. It does not certify that no AI tool was used.
Spotify lists AI vocals or AI production in Song Credits The relevant contributor or delivery partner disclosed that role. It does not mean every part of the song was generated.
Spotify shows an AI Persona badge Spotify or the artist identifies the public artist identity as apparently AI-generated. It does not establish how the audio was made.
Spotify has no AI Credit or badge No such signal is visible in the available Spotify surfaces. It does not prove the recording and artist identity are entirely human.

Why the labels will not answer every authenticity question

Generative AI can enter a project at many points: a complete song, a single instrumental stem, a vocal transformation, a lyric suggestion, mastering, cover art, a music video or an artist persona. A broad “AI-generated” phrase can hide those differences, which is why YouTube’s Fully/Partly/No categories and Spotify’s role-specific credits should not be treated as interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Metadata also travels through several organizations. The artist may know exactly how a recording was made, but a label or distributor has to transmit the relevant field correctly. A distributor may support one platform’s schema before another, and platform interfaces may expose a field in one app surface before it appears everywhere. These operational limits explain why two services can display different information for the same release without one necessarily contradicting the other.

Finally, detection systems have a narrower claim than human knowledge of the entire production history. YouTube says it uses detection as one signal; it does not promise that every use of an AI tool will be recognized. Spotify’s AI Credits are explicitly disclosure-dependent. Treat labels as documented or inferred signals, and treat missing labels as uncertainty.

Which service gives you the clearer answer?

Choose YouTube Music’s signal when you want a quick track-level warning

The player label is easier to notice during ordinary listening. It is useful when your main question is, “Was this release created primarily with generative AI?” The Fully, Partly and No categories also provide a simple vocabulary for comparing releases, although a Partly label may encompass anything from one generated instrument to AI-generated visuals associated with human audio.

Use Spotify’s credits when you need production detail

Song Credits are better suited to the question, “Which part of this track involved AI?” They can identify a role without implying that the whole song is synthetic. However, the detail is available only when the artist, label or distributor has supplied it, so the system is more precise when populated but less conclusive when empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check AI Persona when the artist identity itself is the concern

If the profile uses a fictional or photorealistic synthetic performer, the AI Persona badge is the relevant Spotify signal. Do not substitute it for a production credit, and do not assume that a real artist using an AI tool should receive it.

Bottom line for listeners

YouTube Music puts its main AI signal where you listen: on the player, with a track-level indication of Fully, Partly or No GenAI when partner metadata or YouTube’s signals support a determination. Spotify separates the problem into two labels. AI Credits document disclosed roles in making a song, while AI Persona identifies an apparently AI-generated public artist identity. The practical rule is simple: a visible label is evidence of the stated condition; an absent Spotify credit, and often an unlabeled YouTube track, is not evidence that no AI was involved.
