Yes. YouTube Music’s Sound Search uses your device’s microphone to identify a song you play, sing, or hum, then looks for a match on YouTube Music. Google explains how to use the feature, but does not describe the recognition technology behind it.
How YouTube Music identifies a song you hum
Sound Search captures audio through your microphone and searches for a match. Google’s instructions establish that the feature accepts a played song, singing, or humming; they do not say which model, signal-processing method, or matching database it uses. So the accurate answer to “How does it know?” is that it listens to the audio and searches for a match—the technical details are not publicly explained in the cited help page.
How to use Sound Search in YouTube Music
- Allow microphone access for YouTube Music.
- Sign in to the YouTube Music app.
- Tap the control in the upper-right, then choose Sound Search. Google’s help page represents some controls as images, so their exact appearance may vary.
- Play, sing, or hum the song you want to identify.
- If YouTube Music finds a match, play or save it. If it does not, try again.
These are the steps in YouTube Music’s Sound Search instructions.
Sound Search and YouTube’s Android song search are different features
The main YouTube app has a separately documented song-search mode on Android. It lets you hum or record a song that is currently playing and can return related videos, Shorts, and official music content. That is distinct from Sound Search in YouTube Music, whose documented matches are found on YouTube Music. See YouTube’s guide to discovering music for the main-app workflow.

Do you need YouTube Music Premium?
The Sound Search instructions do not list Premium as a requirement, so they do not establish that a paid membership is necessary. YouTube Music is available with ads; Google describes Premium benefits such as music without ads, background play, audio-only playback, and downloads on its YouTube Music overview. That does not guarantee Sound Search availability for every account, region, or app version.
