YouTube’s Help pages do not establish that a scheduled live stream is forcibly stopped after 12 hours. They do warn that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in the archive, and that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If you need a complete recording, make a separate local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s replay.
Does YouTube stop a live stream after 12 hours?
The official YouTube guidance reviewed here describes what can happen to a stream’s archive and DVR after 12 hours; it does not say that YouTube automatically ends the broadcast at that point or establish a maximum live duration. So do not treat 12 hours as a verified hard cutoff for going live. Whether a particular stream continues beyond that threshold is not answered by these pages.
This distinction matters for long scheduled broadcasts: staying live and preserving a complete replay are separate concerns. YouTube’s documented warning concerns retention and playback, not a confirmed broadcast stop.
Will YouTube save a stream that runs longer than 12 hours?
Not necessarily. YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Automatic archiving is stated guidance, not a guarantee that every stream will be processed successfully. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

If the recording matters, make a separate local recording. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. That backup is not failure-proof: encoder or software problems, a full or failing drive, power loss, or a network issue can still interrupt recording. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a universal storage size or file format, so choose storage for your encoder settings and planned recording duration.
Check the local recording during the broadcast
Confirm that the recording has started and that its file is growing while the event is underway. Checking only after the stream ends may leave you without a usable backup if the encoder did not record as expected.

Can viewers rewind a 24-hour YouTube live stream?
Not reliably for the entire broadcast. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to rewind through the full event. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions may have lower DVR limits. The relevant details are in YouTube’s DVR on live streams guidance.

For a long event, tell viewers not to assume that the live player will offer a complete rewind or that a full replay will appear afterward. If they need a particular segment, arrange a separate recording or publish an accessible recording through a suitable workflow.

How to prepare a long scheduled stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance allows creators to schedule streams in Live Control Room. For an event that runs many hours, plan for the stream itself and for a separate recording.
- Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Use Live Control Room to create the scheduled stream and confirm its date, start time, and audience-facing details. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions cover scheduling and encoder setup.
- Set up the encoder at least two hours ahead. YouTube recommends this lead time so you can configure the stream before the event.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check that the preview appears and the stream is being received before you announce the event as live.
- Monitor stream quality and local recording. Watch for encoder or connection problems, and verify that the local archive file is growing.
- Keep the local recording running for the full event. Make sure the selected storage has enough room for the encoder’s settings and expected duration; allow for the possibility that YouTube may not capture a stream over 12 hours.

Common problems with very long streams
- The stream is live, but there is no complete replay afterward. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording when a full archive is important.
- Viewers cannot rewind to the beginning. DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, and some devices or older app versions have lower limits. Do not promise full rewind.
- The local file stops growing. Check that recording is enabled, that the destination drive has free space, and that the encoder is still recording. A local backup can fail independently of the live broadcast.
- The preview does not appear before the event. Verify the encoder configuration and stream connection in Live Control Room, then check again before the scheduled start. YouTube recommends setting up early and starting the encoder ahead of time.
