If YouTube Live Control Room shows “No data” while FFmpeg says it is sending, the message alone does not reveal the cause. FFmpeg’s local output is not proof that YouTube has received a usable feed. First verify the selected stream’s server URL and key, inspect FFmpeg’s output and logs, then check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status. Work through the checks below in order; don’t expose your stream key while troubleshooting.

1. Confirm FFmpeg is targeting the intended YouTube stream

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to use. Open that stream’s Stream settings and compare its server URL and stream key with the destination configured in FFmpeg. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions tell creators to enter the values shown in Live Control Room in their encoder: YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

  • Make sure the URL and key belong to this stream, rather than another scheduled or previously created stream.
  • Copy the values again if there is any doubt about a typo, stale configuration, or accidental whitespace.
  • Treat the key as a credential. Do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, support posts, or messages.
  • If you suspect the key is compromised or no longer valid, retrieve or reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg’s configuration.

A correct-looking FFmpeg process does not establish that its destination matches the selected Live Control Room session.

2. Read FFmpeg’s output and logs, not just the fact that it is running

Inspect the complete command and the relevant log lines around connection and publishing. Look for connection or authentication errors, output errors, stream-mapping problems, and whether FFmpeg is sending the intended video and audio streams. If you share logs for help, redact the stream key first.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

This is a diagnostic checklist, not a claim that any one of these errors is present. YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the stream in the encoder, checking encoder errors, and updating the encoder if appropriate; it does not provide a specific FFmpeg command or flag that fixes every “No data” case: YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues.

3. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status

Return to the selected stream in Live Control Room. Check whether YouTube displays a preview and what message appears in stream health or status. These are the ingest-side checks: “FFmpeg is sending” describes the local encoder’s activity, while the preview and health status show what YouTube reports for that session.

  • No preview: YouTube has not displayed a usable preview for that stream session. That does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is the URL or key, protocol, encoder output, account, network, or a transient service issue.
  • Preview appears but the event is not live: For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live when ready. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • Preview or health reports an error: Note the exact status and use it alongside the FFmpeg logs rather than assuming the local “sending” message rules out a publishing problem.

4. Verify RTMP or RTMPS destination details

YouTube recommends RTMPS and provides the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room. Its guidance states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the actual URL shown for your stream; do not substitute a guessed server address. YouTube’s guidance is here: Troubleshoot live stream issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an RTMPS-related connection problem, check that the configured protocol is actually rtmps and that the server matches the URL provided in Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests specifying port 443 for some SSL errors. A generic FFmpeg message that data is being sent does not prove that a secure RTMPS connection to the correct YouTube server has succeeded.

5. Compare the actual encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance

Check the output FFmpeg is producing against YouTube’s current recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS. The right bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. The settings below are checks, not a guarantee that matching them alone will restore ingest. Consult YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting and encoder settings for the current bitrate guidance.

Setting YouTube RTMP/RTMPS guidance What to check in FFmpeg
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 Confirm the encoded output uses a supported codec and that the intended video stream is mapped to the output.
Resolution and frame rate Up to 60 fps; bitrate guidance varies with resolution and frame rate Verify the output dimensions and frame rate, then select the corresponding bitrate guidance from YouTube’s current table.
Keyframe interval Recommended: 2 seconds; should not exceed 4 seconds Check the interval in the output, not only the input file’s properties.
Bitrate mode CBR Check that the encoder is configured for constant bitrate.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Confirm the intended audio stream is present and encoded using a listed codec if audio is part of the feed.

These are YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings and recommendations, not a diagnosis of your particular stream. If the settings appear compatible but YouTube still reports no data, continue checking the destination, connection, and session status.

6. Check the outbound connection

If the stream looks and sounds healthy when inspected directly in the encoder but YouTube does not show a usable feed, investigate the outbound network path. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice says an outbound internet connection issue may be involved in this situation and recommends testing connection strength. Compare the encoder’s own output with YouTube’s preview and health status; a healthy local view does not rule out a problem between the encoder and YouTube.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Escalate with useful, safe diagnostic details

If the checks do not resolve the issue, preserve information that can distinguish configuration, encoder, and connection problems:

  • The FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted.
  • Relevant FFmpeg log lines from connection through the attempted publish.
  • The protocol and URL host, but not the secret key.
  • The time of the attempt, which stream was selected in Live Control Room, and the exact preview or health message shown.
  • Whether the encoder itself showed healthy video and audio, and whether you tested the outbound connection.

YouTube advises reporting persistent problems in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance. The symptom alone does not establish an account-specific cause or a current YouTube service incident.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than diagnosing an FFmpeg session, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
