Yes. YouTube has changed its layout repeatedly, from its homepage and video page to its player controls, icons, navigation, and comment interactions. The difference you see can depend on the device, date, and whether your account is included in a limited experiment; not every update reaches all viewers at once.
What counts as a YouTube layout change?
“Layout” means more than the arrangement of the homepage. It can include navigation, the watch page, player controls, icons, and interaction panels such as comments and save menus. YouTube’s updates have touched each of these areas at different times, so there has not been one single redesign that explains every change viewers notice.
The timeline below highlights representative milestones, not every change across YouTube’s products, accounts, and devices.
How YouTube’s interface has evolved
2009–2011: Reorganizing the homepage and video page
In 2009, YouTube described a simpler homepage masthead: search and browsing were grouped on the left, while subscriptions, viewing history, and uploads were grouped on the right. In 2010, it announced a video-page redesign that emphasized the video and creator engagement, reorganized video information and actions, and placed next-video discovery at the right. YouTube said that design was rolled out to all users after earlier feedback and research. In 2011, the company announced a broader refresh connecting a cleaner homepage and watch page with redesigned channels, larger thumbnails, and a more consistent background. YouTube’s 2009 masthead announcement, 2010 video-page announcement, and 2011 site and channel announcement document those changes.

2017: A desktop redesign preview
YouTube opened a preview of a desktop redesign based on Material Design principles, describing simplicity, consistency with its mobile app, and visual polish as goals. During that preview, users could choose “Restore classic YouTube” from the Account Menu. That was a control for the 2017 preview; it is not evidence of a current, general-purpose way to restore an older interface. YouTube’s 2017 preview announcement describes the feature and its historical rollback option.
2022: More focus on the video
YouTube announced a viewing-focused refresh that included ambient mode, a darker dark theme, playlist color treatment, updated watch-page controls, pinch to zoom, and more precise seeking. The company said it wanted to bring focus back to the video and reduce distractions. Those are YouTube’s stated aims, not proof that all viewers found the redesign easier to use. The announcement said YouTube had gathered input from “thousands of viewers around the world” but did not give an exact number. Read YouTube’s 2022 redesign announcement.

2023: A system-wide icon refresh
YouTube Art Director Amy Yip wrote that the company redesigned more than 450 system UI icons. The work addressed legibility, consistency, accessibility, and internationalization, using a visual style that balanced sharp and rounded forms. This was an icon redesign, rather than a single change to the arrangement of the homepage or watch page. YouTube’s 2023 account of its icon and channel work gives the company’s description.
September 2025: End screens and subscribe control
TeamYouTube announced a Hide control for end screens that applies to the video currently being watched, along with the removal of an extra desktop subscribe button that appeared when hovering over a video watermark. YouTube said removing that extra button was intended to simplify viewing. It also reported a less than 1.5% decrease in views from end screens in a global mobile experiment conducted from March through July 2025, in which viewers were offered the option to hide end screens. That is a result from this specific experiment, not a measure of satisfaction with YouTube redesigns generally. TeamYouTube’s September 2025 announcement describes the controls and experiment.

October 2025: Player and interaction updates
TeamYouTube said a set of visual updates would begin rolling out globally the week of October 13, 2025. The announcement covered an updated player across mobile, web, and TV; less intrusive double-tap seeking; smoother transitions between mobile tabs; custom like animations on selected content; refreshed video saving; and threaded comment replies. An announced global rollout does not mean every viewer received every feature on the same day or on every device. See TeamYouTube’s October 2025 update announcement.
2026: Tests that affect only selected viewers
YouTube’s experiment log describes a May 2026 test that moved Subscriptions into a swipeable area at the top of the mobile app. It was limited to a small percentage of Android and iOS viewers globally. The log also describes a July 2026 test in desktop YouTube Studio Insights, which is for creators rather than the ordinary viewer interface. These tests show why an interface difference can be real without being a universal release. Check YouTube’s experiment log for dated test information.

Why does YouTube keep changing the layout?
YouTube has described different goals at different points: simplicity and consistency for its 2017 preview, greater focus on the video and fewer distractions for the 2022 refresh, and a more engaging, easier-to-navigate experience for the 2025 updates. These are the company’s stated design intentions; they do not establish that every change works better for every viewer.
Some adjustments are experiments, while others are announced as broader rollouts. YouTube’s viewer update archive lists product updates, and its experiment log describes tests. A feature’s presence in an update archive does not by itself establish that it is available to every device, account, or viewer.

Why might your YouTube look different from someone else’s?
- Different platform: YouTube’s web, Android, iOS, TV, and Studio interfaces do not necessarily change in the same way or on the same schedule.
- Rollout timing: An announced rollout can reach viewers over time rather than simultaneously.
- Experiment eligibility: YouTube may test a design with a limited group before deciding whether to expand it.
- Different interface area: A change to player controls or comments can be mistaken for a full site redesign, even when the homepage has not changed.
When comparing two screens, note the device or platform, the date, the part of the interface, and whether the change is an announced rollout or an experiment. Without those details, two different screens do not necessarily indicate that one person has a permanent version and another has an outdated one.
Can you revert to the old YouTube layout?
The historical “Restore classic YouTube” option applied to the 2017 desktop preview. It does not establish that a current rollback control exists. A 2024 YouTube Help Community thread titled “How do I revert the new experimental youtube redesign on desktop?” shows that viewers asked about reversing an experimental redesign, but the question itself is not official confirmation of a current setting. YouTube’s dated viewer update archive and experiment log are the relevant official places to check for current update or test information.
Do not assume that a setting documented for an earlier preview still exists, or that an interface shown in an experiment can be switched off through a universal account setting. Availability depends on the specific update and the viewer’s eligibility.
