In a 2026 survey of U.S. adults, YouTube narrowly ranked ahead of broadcast and cable TV news as a source for political and election news: 16.5% named YouTube, compared with 16.1% for TV news. The result points to a close contest between one online platform and traditional television news—not a decisive win over TV or proof that people have stopped watching television.
What the Syracuse survey found
The Center for the Creator Economy at Syracuse University reported the findings in its inaugural industry Flash Report. Its demographically representative survey included 1,001 U.S. adults and was conducted through Prolific. In the study’s ranking of sources for political and election news, YouTube came first among the listed categories, followed closely by broadcast and cable TV news, then print and online news sites.

The figures are from the Center for the Creator Economy’s 2026 survey, as reported by Syracuse University Today on October 8, 2026. The 0.4 percentage-point gap between YouTube and TV makes “edged ahead” more accurate than saying YouTube decisively overtook television.

No. The 16.5% result compares YouTube, a single platform, with separate source categories. The same announcement says social platforms collectively accounted for 60%, compared with 32% for traditional sources. That is a different, grouped comparison; it does not show YouTube alone beating television and news sites combined.

Indeed, when TV and news sites are combined, the announcement says they outpaced YouTube nearly two to one. The headline ranking and the grouped-source comparison can both be true because they measure different categories.
What the survey says about trust in independent creators
The Syracuse survey also asked about independent news creators and political coverage. It reported that 61% of respondents trusted a well-known independent news creator as much as a well-known professional journalist or major news organization on political topics. Separately, 79% said they still saw a meaningful difference between an independent creator and a journalist, so the findings do not suggest that respondents viewed the roles as interchangeable.

These are self-reported views from the Center for the Creator Economy’s 2026 survey, not measures of the accuracy or quality of any particular creator’s work.
How the result fits broader news habits
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s 2026 Digital News Report offers a wider but different view. Based on a YouGov survey of almost 100,000 respondents across 48 markets, it found that social media and video networks together reached 54% as a source of news globally, compared with 52% for TV news and 51% for news websites and apps. The report’s authors caution that the two-point lead over TV should be interpreted carefully.

This international comparison concerns news generally across many markets; it does not replicate the Syracuse survey’s U.S.-only focus on political and election news. The Reuters Institute also found that 30% identified social media and video networks as their main news source in 2026, up from 22% five years earlier. Those figures describe a broader shift toward social and video news, not a direct measure of YouTube’s share of U.S. political coverage.
The report notes that YouTube news-video use spans age groups more evenly than news-video use on TikTok and Instagram, where younger viewers are more likely to watch news. Use also varies considerably by platform and market. These findings add context, but they should not be read as evidence that every age group or country follows the same pattern. Why “TV” can mean a source or a screen
A shift away from broadcast news as a source does not necessarily mean people have abandoned television sets. Viewers can watch news through video apps on internet-connected smart TVs, as well as through linear broadcast or cable channels. The device used to watch and the organization or platform supplying the news are separate things.

The Reuters Institute discusses audiences using connected TVs and video apps for news viewing. That helps explain why online video and television hardware can overlap: a person may watch a platform’s news video on a TV screen without receiving it as a conventional broadcast.

How to read the headline accurately
- For U.S. political and election news: YouTube narrowly led broadcast and cable TV news in one 2026 survey of 1,001 U.S. adults.
- For grouped sources: Social platforms collectively outpaced traditional sources in the Syracuse announcement, but that is not a YouTube-versus-TV-only result.
