The practical difference is visibility: on a computer, YouTube presents the comments section in the watch-page flow, while the mobile app commonly requires you to tap or expand the comments area before you can read the full thread or a pinned comment. The same moderation and sorting rules apply across platforms, but the controls are placed and revealed differently.
“Mobile” is not one single layout. The YouTube app, a phone browser in Mobile Web mode, and a phone browser switched to Desktop mode can show different arrangements. YouTube also rolls out interface changes gradually, so two accounts on the same platform may not have identical watch pages.
Desktop and mobile comments at a glance
| What you are checking | Computer browser | Phone app or mobile browser | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening comments | YouTube documents comments as part of the watch page beneath the video. | The comments area may be collapsed; tap or expand it to reveal the thread. | A mobile user may need one extra tap even when comments are enabled. |
| Pinned comment | Shown at the top of the watch page with a “Pinned by” label and the channel name. | Open the comments section first; the pinned item appears after the section is expanded. | Not seeing a pin in the initial mobile preview does not mean the creator removed it. |
| Comment order | Viewers see YouTube’s relevance-based presentation; creators choose Top or Newest in Studio. | The same creator setting applies, with an Android-only Members comments view documented by YouTube. | “Top” is a ranking, not a complete list of every comment. |
| Missing comments | Comments can be disabled, restricted, held, filtered, or absent from Top. | The same rules apply in the app and browser. | Layout alone cannot diagnose moderation or ranking. |
| Video seeking | Drag the seek bar and use the thumbnail row for more precise positioning. | Drag or swipe while seeking to use the thumbnail feedback. | The goal is shared; the gesture is adapted to a pointer or touch screen. |
| Phone browser mode | Desktop browser is the normal computer reference. | YouTube supports Mobile Web and Desktop mode in a phone browser. | Identify the mode before comparing a phone page with the app. |
The documented behavior is about access and visibility, not a promise that every watch page has one fixed column, card size, or comment position. Responsive breakpoints, account experiments, device dimensions, and staged releases can all change the surrounding layout.

Where to find comments on each platform
Computer: comments are in the watch-page flow
On a desktop or laptop, open a video in a browser and scroll below the player and description area. YouTube’s computer help describes the comments section beneath the video and identifies a pinned comment at the top of that watch page. The section can include the creator’s post, replies, sorting controls, and notices about moderation.

The exact vertical position can change as YouTube rearranges the title, description, recommendations, memberships, or other modules. Do not use an old screenshot that shows a particular left or right column as a permanent rule. The stable instruction is to continue through the watch page below the player until you reach Comments.
Mobile app: expand the comments area
In the YouTube app, the initial watch page gives the video player and a compact set of details priority. A comments preview or heading may appear below those details rather than showing the full thread immediately. Tap the comments heading, preview card, or expand control to open the complete section. Once expanded, scroll through the thread and its replies in the normal way.
This extra interaction explains why a phone user can conclude that comments are missing when they are merely collapsed. It also explains the pinned-comment difference: the pin is surfaced after the comment section is opened, rather than necessarily appearing in the first screenful beneath the player.

A phone browser can load YouTube in Mobile Web mode or in a browser’s Desktop mode. YouTube documents both choices in its mobile-browser guidance: the browser experience is not identical to the native app, and Desktop mode requests a computer-style page within the phone browser.
Use the browser’s site or page menu to switch modes, then reload the watch page. A Desktop-mode page may expose more desktop-style controls, but it is still constrained by a small touch screen and should not be treated as proof that every computer layout element will match. YouTube also notes that editing and uploading are not available in mobile browsers; that limitation concerns browser use generally and does not establish the position of every watch-page component.

How pinned comments appear
On a computer
YouTube says a pinned comment is placed at the top of the watch page’s comment area and marked with a “Pinned by” label followed by the channel name. The label identifies the creator’s deliberate pin; it is different from YouTube’s relevance ranking. If several comments are visible, look for that explicit label rather than assuming the first item is pinned.
On a phone
Open or expand Comments before looking for the pin. YouTube’s mobile behavior requires that interaction to reveal content such as a pinned comment. After expansion, the pin should be identifiable by the same “Pinned by” treatment, although the surrounding card, spacing, and location can vary with the app version and screen size.
If a creator has not pinned anything, no pinned label will appear. If comments are disabled, restricted, or unavailable for the video, there is no comment section in which a pin can be displayed.
Sorting, Top comments, and the Android Members view
Viewer order is not the same as creator settings
Creators configure a video’s comment presentation in YouTube Studio. The documented choices are Top and Newest. YouTube’s comment-filter guidance describes Most relevant as the default sorting used when comments are displayed to viewers. The label and exact control placement can differ by platform, but the distinction matters: a creator’s setting and a viewer’s current list order are related, not interchangeable.
Changing to Newest is a useful diagnostic step when you cannot find a recent reply. A comment that is absent from Top can still be present in the chronological list.

Why Top comments can omit a real comment
YouTube selects Top comments with multiple relevance and interaction signals. The resulting list is a selection, not a complete export of every approved comment. YouTube may omit material it considers unlikely to be valued or interacted with. Therefore, absence from Top does not by itself show that a creator, moderator, or automated system deleted the comment.
To check, open the sorting control and choose Newest where that option is available. If the comment still does not appear, investigate moderation, account restrictions, reply threading, or whether it was posted on a different video or live-stream replay.
Android’s Members comments view
YouTube documents a Members comments view that is exclusive to Android mobile devices. It is not evidence that the same view exists on iPhone, iPad, desktop, or every mobile browser. When an eligible channel and account expose this view, it provides a member-focused way to browse comments; ordinary Top and Newest behavior remains a separate concept.
When comments are disabled, restricted, held, or filtered
A different layout is only one possible explanation for a missing comment. YouTube’s computer help lists several channel or video conditions that change comment availability:
- The creator can disable comments for the video.
- Comments can be limited to subscribers or channel members.
- A creator can require a minimum subscription time before someone may comment.
- Private videos do not have comments.
- Comments can be held for review or filtered by moderation systems.
Replies are threaded beneath the original comment. On a phone, a collapsed thread may hide those replies until you tap the original comment or its reply count. On a computer, the same thread may be visible sooner because more vertical space is available, but it is still a nested conversation rather than a separate top-level list.

These rules apply to both desktop and mobile. Switching from the app to a computer cannot reveal a comment that the creator disabled or that YouTube removed under its policies.
How creators change comment settings
YouTube Studio on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open the video whose discussion settings you want to change.
- Open the video’s comment settings and choose the available order or restriction, such as Top or Newest, or a subscriber/member requirement.
- Save the change, then reopen the watch page to verify how the setting is presented to viewers.
The labels and navigation can be adjusted by YouTube over time, so follow the current settings panel rather than an older screenshot. The important separation is that Studio controls are creator-side; a viewer cannot override a channel’s disabled-comments or eligibility rule by changing device.
YouTube app
YouTube also documents video comment settings in the YouTube app. Open the creator controls for the selected video, enter its comment settings, and apply the desired option. The app may place these controls behind a video-management or edit menu, while the public watch page uses a separate comments panel. Test the result from a viewer account when eligibility restrictions are involved.
How the video player layout differs
Shared seeking, different gestures
Desktop and mobile do not have completely separate video capabilities. YouTube’s product announcement describes precise seeking on both platforms: while you move through the video, a row of thumbnail previews helps you locate the intended moment. On a computer, drag the seek control with a mouse or trackpad. On a phone, drag or swipe along the seek area with your finger. The visual feedback serves the same purpose even though touch interaction leaves less room for permanent controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Other controls can move into an overlay on mobile to preserve viewing area. A phone player may hide buttons until you tap the video, while a desktop player can keep more controls visible when the pointer is nearby. Treat this as responsive behavior, not as a different video file or a guarantee that a control is permanently absent.

Why the surrounding watch page keeps changing
YouTube says it is refining the interface to reduce clutter and keep attention on the video. In a YouTube Blog post dated August 13, 2026, Jonathan Terleski, vice president of User Experience, described the principle this way: “The interface shouldn’t compete with the video you’re trying to watch.” See YouTube’s design-principles post for the stated approach.
A separate YouTube product post about watch-page updates and precise seeking says changes roll out gradually. That means a feature announcement is product context, not proof that every account currently has an identical player, comment card, or thumbnail row. Platform, device, account experiments, and rollout timing all matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step: find a pinned comment on a phone
- Open the video in the YouTube app or in your phone browser.
- Tap the video’s comments heading or preview card. If the section is collapsed, use its expand control.
- Wait for the full comments panel to load.
- Look for the comment marked “Pinned by” and the channel name.
- If you do not see it, check whether comments are disabled or restricted, and use the available sort control to inspect the list.
- On Android, check whether the Members comments view is available when you are looking for member-focused discussion; do not expect this view on iPhone or desktop.
A missing pin after these checks does not prove a rendering error. The creator may have unpinned the post, the video may have no pin, or comments may be unavailable under the video’s settings.
Step-by-step: investigate a comment that seems to be missing
- Confirm the video. Verify that you are on the same upload, Short, or live-stream replay where the comment was posted.
- Open the complete section. On mobile, expand Comments rather than relying on the preview.
- Change the order. Choose Newest if the control is available. Top is a relevance-ranked selection and may not include every approved comment.
- Expand the thread. If it was a reply, open the parent comment and its reply list.
- Check eligibility. Subscriber-only, member-only, minimum-subscription-time, or private-video rules can prevent a comment from appearing to you.
- Consider moderation. A held or filtered comment may not be public, and disabled comments cannot display replies or pins.
- Compare environments carefully. Try the app, Mobile Web, or a computer, but remember that changing platform cannot bypass creator restrictions or YouTube removals.
YouTube’s guidance on comments that are not showing explains that Top comments are selected using several signals. Use the official troubleshooting page for the documented ranking and removal explanations.
Desktop, mobile app, and mobile browser: what to compare
When someone says “YouTube looks different,” first identify the access path:
- Desktop browser: a wide pointer-driven watch page where comments are documented beneath the video.
- Native mobile app: a touch-first page that commonly collapses comments and reveals them after a tap.
- Mobile Web: YouTube loaded in a phone browser with a mobile arrangement.
- Desktop mode on a phone: a browser request for the computer-style site, still viewed through a narrow touch screen.
Then record the account, device, operating-system version, app or browser version, and whether the video is public, private, a Short, or a live replay. This information is more useful than describing a screenshot as simply “mobile.” YouTube’s mobile-browser documentation is available at Use YouTube on mobile browsers.
What the official help pages establish—and what they do not
YouTube’s help pages establish the interaction rules: comments are part of the computer watch page, mobile viewers may need to expand the section, pinned comments carry a label, creators can choose Top or Newest, and Android has the documented Members comments view. They also establish moderation and eligibility conditions that can hide a discussion independently of screen size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThey do not establish one universal pixel-level layout. You should not infer that comments always occupy a particular desktop column, that every phone shows the same collapsed preview, or that Desktop mode on a phone exactly reproduces a laptop page. YouTube’s own design updates are staged, and responsive layouts adapt to screen dimensions. A current screenshot is evidence of one account and rollout state, not a permanent specification.
