Short answer: Shopify now supplies many of the technical building blocks an AI shopping agent needs, but a store is not truly decision-ready by default. In an audit of 122 Shopify storefronts, checkout creation and cancellation worked reliably, while shipping costs, delivery dates, pickup, policy rules, accessibility semantics and post-purchase actions were usually incomplete or inaccurate.
What “agent-ready” means in practice
An agent-ready store must do more than expose a product feed. An agent needs enough trustworthy information to answer a buyer’s questions, enough rules to apply the store’s policies, and enough operational capability to move safely from product discovery to checkout and handoff.
Bill Hunt’s audit tested 122 leading Shopify merchants between August and September 2026. It examined agent-facing files and tools, product-page markup, visible policies, a non-completing checkout lifecycle, server-rendered accessibility, and a later browser check of WebMCP tools. Requests were rate-limited; throttled or blocked responses were recorded as unknown rather than absent.
What the 122-store audit covered
| Layer tested | Coverage | What it measured |
|---|---|---|
agents.md |
122 stores | Whether an agent guidance file was available and whether it was merchant-specific |
| Policy text | 56 stores | Information visible in policy pages |
| Policy tool | 88 stores | Answers to return and shipping questions |
| Live checkout | 74 stores | Creation, reading, cancellation, errors and human handoff without placing an order |
| Product-page accessibility | 68 stores | Server-rendered labels, controls, add-to-cart elements and status announcements |
| Shipping quote | One Boston address | Whether a machine could return a cost and delivery estimate for a specific destination |
Shopify’s defaults are widespread, but mostly generic
Of the 122 stores, 89 served an /agents.md file. Eighty-three of those 89 files were near-identical copies of a Shopify-generated template. Only five files in the full sample were written by merchants. The high presence rate therefore measures Shopify’s platform rollout more than each retailer’s own preparation.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
A generated file can describe how an agent should interact with a store, but it cannot automatically know a merchant’s actual return window, cancellation deadline, final-sale exceptions, shipping threshold or pickup rules unless those details are supplied and exposed accurately.
Checkout actions worked, but none could finish a purchase alone
The server-route checkout test was the strongest part of the audit. Across 74 live checkouts:
- Every checkout was created for a current, in-stock item.
- Every response included a typed status and coded severity errors.
- Every checkout could be read back.
- Cancellation was confirmed.
- A second cancellation attempt was refused with a coded error.
- Every flow returned a URL for human handoff.
No purchase was completed and no payment details were sent. All 74 checkouts returned requires_escalation and requires_buyer_input. Shopify’s default agent rules require a person to approve the final money movement, and 3D Secure or similar authentication steps return control to the buyer. “Callable” therefore describes a reliable workflow up to authorization, not autonomous purchasing.

Agents could not reliably answer the questions that decide a purchase
Returns were present more often than they were usable
All 88 stores tested with policy questions returned something for the item return-window question. Only 70 responses were usable. A response can exist while still omitting the length of the window, qualifying conditions, exclusions or the event from which the period is measured.

Shipping cost and delivery timing were almost entirely missing
For the question “What does shipping cost to Boston, and when will it arrive?”, only one of the 88 stores returned any response, and zero returned a usable answer. A shipping method without a destination-specific price and date does not resolve the buyer’s decision.
This is the central distinction between having information somewhere on a site and giving an agent the context and rules needed to apply it. As Bill Hunt put it, “Having the information isn’t enough. An agent needs information, context, rules, and operational capabilities to resolve a customer’s decision.”
Pickup declarations were often machine-readable but wrong
Ninety-three stores exposed a UCP fulfillment declaration. Every one listed shipping as the only fulfillment method, including retailers whose own sites documented pickup or click-and-collect. The result is especially dangerous because it looks clean to an agent: the response is explicit, but it can falsely tell a shopper that pickup does not exist.

Fulfillment data must reflect the options enabled in Shopify, including store pickup where applicable, and should include a delivery date rather than only a method name.

Post-purchase operations were absent
None of the 122 stores exposed a tool to cancel, change or return an order after placement. UCP defines order reading and an order-event webhook, but the protocol tested here did not define an operation to cancel or amend an order.
That leaves a major gap after checkout. An agent can create a checkout, obtain buyer approval and hand control to a person, yet still have no standardized way to help with a cancellation, address change or return once an order exists.
Accessibility defects also make stores harder for agents to use
The accessibility check read server HTML only, so JavaScript added after page load may improve some results. Even with that qualification, the shared markup used by screen readers, keyboard users and browser agents showed substantial problems on the 68 retrievable product pages:

| Finding | Stores or pages affected |
|---|---|
| At least one unlabeled input | 47% |
| At least one empty link | 46% |
| At least one empty button | 37% |
| Dropdown users had an unlabeled size or option selector | 65% of stores using dropdowns |
| No add-to-cart control in server HTML | 19 pages |
| Passed all three basic requirements—native named buy button, labeled controls and a live result announcement | 31 of 68 pages |
A label on a size selector, a named buy button and a live “added to cart” announcement are not separate agent features. They are semantic controls that make the same buying path understandable to assistive technology and browser automation.

Overall decision readiness was zero
The audit evaluated nine requirements for a complete purchase decision, including information, actions, machine-readable accuracy, interface semantics and safe handoff. None of the 122 stores passed all nine. The best stores passed seven. All three stores at that level still failed to provide both a stated cancellation window and a way to cancel.
This result explains why a store can pass a technical checkout test and still fail a real shopper: the missing pieces sit around the transaction rather than inside checkout creation itself.

September 28 announcement and September 30 browser check
Shopify announced WebMCP checkout support on September 28. In a September 30 browser check at two stores, all four announced tools registered: get_checkout, update_checkout, complete_checkout and navigate_to_storefront. get_checkout returned line items, totals including tax, the fulfillment method and coded messages for missing fields. The check did not submit an order.
What merchants should fix first
- Replace or extend the default
agents.md. State the actual return window, cancellation rule, shipping threshold, pickup options and other commercial rules that an agent must apply. - Publish complete product policy markup. Add
MerchantReturnPolicyandOfferShippingDetailsto product structured data. IncludeitemConditionfor used or refurbished inventory. - Expose delivery dates and pickup. Make destination-specific timing and enabled pickup options available through the agent-facing fulfillment data.
- Inspect
robots.txt. Check forDisallow: /policies/. The audit found 51 stores blocking policy pages because of an oldrobots.txt.liquidtemplate. - Run an accessibility check on product pages. Use WAVE or an equivalent audit, label every size and option selector, provide a named buy button and announce cart results.
- Keep inventory and variant IDs current. Stable IDs and clean availability responses prevent agents from acting on sold-out or invalid references.
What Shopify could improve at the platform level
- Generate agent surfaces from merchant settings already stored in Shopify, including return windows, final-sale status, return shipping or restocking fees and cancellation windows.
- Pass delivery dates through UCP and declare pickup accurately.
- Make the policy tool answer buyer questions or explicitly state when information is unavailable.
- Warn merchants when a legacy robots template blocks policy pages.
- Distinguish “already canceled” from “never existed” in error responses.
- Define standardized post-purchase cancel, change and return operations.
A practical readiness check for any Shopify store
Test the store as a buyer’s agent rather than checking only whether an endpoint responds. Verify that a product can be identified by a current variant ID; that price, condition, inventory and shipping details agree across structured data and visible content; that a destination produces a cost and delivery date; that pickup appears when offered; that return and cancellation rules are explicit; that checkout requires buyer authorization before payment; and that errors provide a safe recovery or human handoff.
A store is agent-ready only when those answers remain accurate from product discovery through checkout and after the order. Shopify’s defaults provide a useful starting layer, not a finished implementation.
