Short answer: A smart refrigerator is not currently known to be part of a self-replicating AI botnet. Anthropic’s October 12, 2026 Frontier Red Team work is a forward-looking warning: a 9-billion-parameter model ran inference on eight of nine tested hardware types, and the company says smaller models could be months away from self-replicating across commercial IoT devices. Separately, attackers really did compromise internet-connected refrigeration controllers at an estimated 700 French supermarkets, raising temperatures as high as 50°C (122°F), spoiling food and causing fires.
Two very different security stories
The AI-botnet scenario and the French supermarket attack involve connected appliances, but they are not the same event. Anthropic describes an experiment-backed capability that has not produced a documented consumer outbreak. Ars Technica’s account of France describes a real compromise of refrigeration-control systems.

Can a smart fridge really join an AI botnet?
Technically, a connected appliance can become a host for malicious code if it has an exploitable service, enough computing resources and a path to other devices. The attraction is scale: inexpensive devices are widely distributed and often receive less security attention than servers or laptops.
Anthropic wrote that “small AI models may be months away” from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial IoT devices such as smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes. The statement is a projection based on experiments, not a claim that refrigerators are already spreading an AI worm.

The proposed worm would carry its model weights as it reproduced or download them from a public hub, then run inference directly on compromised hardware. Because each infected device could help find and compromise others, there would be no single command server to switch off. Anthropic says such a replicator could be difficult to shut down even if its growth were slow, with a doubling time measured in days.
What Anthropic actually demonstrated
- A 9-billion-parameter model established inference on eight of nine hardware types tested.
- The experiment did not demonstrate a complete, autonomous worm operating as a consumer-device outbreak.
- The result indicates that model execution on a range of constrained or inexpensive hardware is becoming practical; it does not establish that any particular refrigerator model is vulnerable.
How hackers disrupted supermarket refrigerators in France
The French incident shows a more immediate and familiar risk: attackers do not need an autonomous AI system if a control interface is reachable and poorly protected. Ars Technica reported that an estimated 700 supermarkets had internet-connected refrigeration controllers compromised.

The attackers activated defrosters, driving refrigerator temperatures as high as 50°C (122°F). Food could spoil at those temperatures, and the report says fires occurred at some locations. The reported enabling conditions were outdated firmware, direct exposure to the public internet and weak remote-access practices.

Why one weakness scaled across many sites
- Public reachability: Controllers exposed directly to the internet could be probed remotely.
- Old software: Outdated firmware left known or preventable weaknesses in place.
- Weak access controls: Predictable or unchanged credentials and poorly controlled third-party access increased the chance of unauthorized entry.
- Operational consequences: A change to a cooling setting became a physical safety and supply-chain problem, not merely a data breach.
What owners and operators should do now
- Install current firmware and software releases. Check the appliance maker, controller vendor or facilities-management provider for the latest supported version. Record devices that are no longer supported so they can be isolated or replaced.
- Replace default and predictable passwords. Use a unique, long credential for every appliance or controller account. Disable unused accounts and require multi-factor authentication where the product supports it.
- Remove direct internet exposure. Do not publish an appliance or controller’s administration interface to the public internet. Put devices on a separate network or VLAN with only the outbound access they need.
- Put administration behind a VPN and IP allowlist. Permit remote management only through an authenticated VPN and from approved source addresses. Review the allowlist when staff, contractors or locations change.
- Control third-party connections. Inventory vendors with remote access, issue time-limited accounts, log their sessions and revoke access when maintenance ends.
- Monitor for physical anomalies. Alerts for unexpected defrost cycles, temperature changes, new accounts or configuration edits can reduce the time between compromise and intervention.
- Prepare a safe manual fallback. Document how to disconnect a controller, preserve food-safety operations and contact the responsible vendor without disabling essential refrigeration blindly.
Why this matters as smart-home use grows
Connected appliances are moving from novelty to normal household infrastructure. Bitkom figures quoted by Deutsche Welle put smart-home application use at 52% of German households in 2026. More connected devices mean more potential entry points, but adoption alone does not prove that a specific product is unsafe. Security depends on update support, network placement, authentication and the controls around remote maintenance.

The refrigerator botnet is a credible future-risk scenario, not a confirmed consumer attack. The French supermarket compromise is the incident happening now: exposed controllers, stale firmware and weak remote access produced measurable physical damage. Treat every internet-connected appliance as a networked computer, keep it patched, isolate it from the public internet and make remote administration deliberate, narrow and auditable.
