If your memory kit supports a faster XMP or EXPO profile, but that profile is disabled, your PC may be using its default memory settings instead. The switch is in BIOS/UEFI—not Windows—but the exact name and maximum stable speed depend on your RAM, processor, motherboard, and firmware. The “2014 speeds” line is a hook, not a universal description of what every PC does.

What the memory profile switch does

RAM can include a standard JEDEC configuration and one or more higher-performance profiles. Intel XMP and AMD EXPO are profile technologies that let supported systems apply preset memory speed, timings, and voltage. Intel says compatible XMP memory first boots at default JEDEC settings; enabling a profile applies its preset. Intel describes the presets as “tested by the manufacturer for stability,” but that does not guarantee every CPU-and-motherboard combination will be stable at those settings. Intel’s XMP overview explains the profile technology.

This is a plausible reason a kit may be running below its advertised profile, not a diagnosis based on the headline alone. The exact profile options depend on the installed memory and platform. XMP is Intel’s name; EXPO is AMD’s. Some motherboard firmware also presents options such as DOCP, and labels can vary by board and firmware version. ASUS documents XMP, EXPO, and DOCP options, noting that the available choice depends on the platform and whether the memory supports XMP or EXPO. ASUS’s BIOS memory-profile guide shows one vendor’s example.

Check whether your kit and system support a profile

Before changing a setting, identify the motherboard model and the exact memory kit. Check the memory kit’s specifications and the motherboard maker’s specifications or qualified vendor list (QVL), if available. Maximum memory frequency is not determined by the RAM alone: ASUS says it depends on the DRAM, motherboard, and CPU. A kit’s advertised profile is therefore not a promise that every system using it will run at that rate.

Crucial 32GB DDR5 RAM Kit (2x16GB), 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory 262-Pin SODIMM, Compatible with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000, Black - CT2K16G56C46S5
  • Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
  • Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
  • Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
  • Confirm whether the kit advertises an XMP or EXPO profile and note its stated data rate and timings.
  • Check the motherboard manual and QVL for supported memory configurations.
  • Use modules from the same matched kit where possible; mixing separate modules can make compatibility and stability harder to predict.

Enable XMP, EXPO, or the board’s equivalent in BIOS/UEFI

Menu names and key presses differ by motherboard. Use the manual for your exact board if the example below does not match what you see. ASUS documents this example path and keys:

  1. Restart the PC and press Delete during startup to enter BIOS/UEFI.
  2. On the documented ASUS example, press F7 for Advanced Mode, then open Ai Tweaker > Ai OverClock Tuner.
  3. Select the supported XMP, EXPO, or DOCP profile that matches your installed kit and platform. Do not select a profile simply because it shows the largest number.
  4. Save changes and restart. On the ASUS example, F10 saves the settings; other boards may use a different key or confirmation screen.

For Intel instructions specific to supported processors, see Intel’s guide to configuring XMP. For the ASUS menu example and its platform caveats, see ASUS’s support guide.

Verify the memory speed after rebooting

Check the reported memory speed in BIOS/UEFI or in Windows 10 or 11 at Task Manager > Performance > Memory. Compare the displayed value with the kit and platform specifications. If the change did not take effect, revisit BIOS/UEFI and confirm the profile is selected; do not assume a successful save or a kit label proves the system is running at the advertised rate.

If the PC will not boot or becomes unstable

A profile is a form of memory overclocking. Intel warns that changing frequency or voltage beyond specifications can affect system stability and warranty; check the current terms from your component makers rather than assuming a blanket warranty outcome. If the PC fails to boot or is unstable after enabling a profile, restore default settings or clear CMOS by following the instructions for the exact motherboard. Then check the board’s QVL, confirm that the modules are a compatible matched kit, and consult the motherboard or memory maker’s support information. Intel’s XMP overview describes the technology and its overclocking context.

Should you enable the fastest profile?

Only use a profile supported by the memory kit and your CPU-and-motherboard combination, and check stability afterward. A higher data rate is not automatically a meaningful improvement for every workload, and the available evidence here does not establish a universal performance gain or percentage. If the installed kit already has a compatible profile, enabling it does not require buying new RAM.
