That i440fx label in a Proxmox VE virtual machine does not mean your server contains a 1996 motherboard or that the guest is running on obsolete silicon. It identifies the virtual motherboard and device topology that QEMU presents to the guest. The model is old because compatibility—not the host CPU’s age—is the point.
What “i440fx” means in Proxmox
Every Proxmox VE virtual machine is given a QEMU machine type. Think of that type as a declared virtual motherboard: it defines the chipset family, buses, firmware-facing devices and other hardware the guest operating system is allowed to see.
The familiar i440fx machine model emulates Intel’s 440FX PCIset, paired with a PIIX3 ISA bridge. That layout includes the sort of legacy components associated with a 1990s PC, such as conventional PCI and ISA devices, IDE storage, serial hardware, floppy support and legacy VGA. Intel introduced the physical 440FX PCIset in May 1996.
Your host can instead contain a current Xeon, EPYC, Core or Ryzen processor. The virtual chipset label is not a description of that processor, the server’s motherboard or the VM’s performance. It is a compatibility contract between QEMU and the guest.

Why QEMU preserves a 1990s platform
Changing a VM’s virtual hardware can be as disruptive as replacing a physical computer’s motherboard. Guest operating systems identify storage controllers, network adapters, PCI addresses and firmware devices. If those devices move or change type, a driver may not load, a boot disk may no longer be found, or a license tied to hardware identifiers may require reactivation.
QEMU therefore keeps machine definitions stable and versioned. Release 2.8.0 introduced versioned forms such as pc-i440fx-2.8 and pc-q35-2.8. Later QEMU releases retain older definitions so a guest can be migrated between hosts while continuing to see the same virtual hardware contract. QEMU’s documentation describes the original legacy forms as carrying “a lot of assumptions from the days when QEMU was emulating a legacy PC” and says they are not recommended for modern configurations.

That compatibility system is also why an apparently cosmetic change—such as switching the machine type—must be treated as a hardware migration. Very old machine versions can eventually be deprecated or removed, so the machine type and its version belong in the VM’s long-term compatibility records.

i440fx versus q35
| Decision axis | i440fx | q35 |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual platform | Intel 440FX with a PIIX-era legacy PC layout | Intel Q35 with an ICH9-oriented layout |
| Bus topology | Conventional PCI and legacy devices | Provides a virtual PCIe bus |
| PCIe passthrough | Not the documented Proxmox choice for PCIe passthrough | Documented Proxmox choice for PCIe passthrough |
| Best fit | An existing, stable guest that depends on legacy controllers | A new or tested design needing PCIe-oriented devices |
| Main risk | Older versions may eventually be deprecated | Changing versions or topology can alter device enumeration |
Q35 is newer, but it is not contemporary hardware either. Intel announced the Q35 Express chipset’s extended lifecycle in October 2007. In virtualization, its significance is the virtual PCIe-capable topology and related ICH9 model, not the age of the physical chipset.

Should you change an existing VM to q35?
Do not change a working VM merely because i440fx looks old. There is no established universal performance improvement from switching to q35. The practical reason to choose q35 is a required capability—especially PCIe passthrough or Intel virtual IOMMU (vIOMMU)—or a deliberate redesign of the guest’s virtual hardware.
Keep i440fx when
- The guest boots reliably and uses legacy PCI or IDE-style virtual devices.
- You do not need PCIe passthrough or vIOMMU.
- Migration and snapshot compatibility are more important than changing the virtual topology.
Choose q35 for a new VM when
- The design requires a virtual PCIe bus.
- You plan PCIe device passthrough; Proxmox documents q35 for that use.
- You need Intel vIOMMU and have verified that the guest operating system supports the resulting devices.
How to change machine type without turning it into a boot failure
- Record the current value. In the VM’s Proxmox hardware or options configuration, note the complete machine type and version, not just “i440fx” or “q35.” Keep that value available for rollback.
- Check the guest’s drivers. Confirm that the operating system has drivers for its virtual storage and network controllers and that its boot configuration is not tied to a specific controller or PCI address.
- Make a tested backup. A backup is useful only if you know it can be restored. Preserve a copy of the original VM configuration as well as the disk data.
- Plan a cold-boot test. Shut the guest down cleanly before changing the machine type. Do not treat this as a hot-plug operation.
- Change one thing at a time. Switch the machine model or version, boot the guest and verify storage, networking, firmware behavior and application services before making additional hardware changes.
- Roll back if enumeration changes. If the boot disk disappears, a driver fails or the guest behaves differently, restore the recorded machine type and configuration rather than repeatedly changing unrelated devices.
Machine versions, migration and snapshots
Pinning a machine version gives a long-lived VM a known guest-visible hardware contract. That matters when hosts run different QEMU releases, when live migration is part of operations, and when snapshots may be restored months later. Versioning cannot make incompatible hardware disappear, but it reduces surprises by preventing an upgrade from silently presenting a different virtual motherboard.

Administrators should therefore document the machine family and version alongside firmware mode, virtual controllers and passthrough assignments. Also track deprecation notices: an especially old version may not remain available indefinitely, which can turn a later host upgrade into an avoidable migration project.
