Yes—your phone may be able to straighten a crooked shot, adjust perspective, or improve a composition after you take it. Basic editing rearranges or crops pixels already in the photo; newer AI reframing tools can also generate plausible image content beyond the captured edges. That generated material is not a recovery of what the camera saw.
Choose the edit that matches the problem
| Tool | What it changes | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Crop | Changes which part of the existing image is shown. | Cannot reveal anything outside the original frame. |
| Straighten or rotate | Corrects orientation by rotating the image; the editor may trim edges as a result. | Does not add missing scene details. |
| Perspective | Adjusts angle and depth to make a skewed or tilted subject look more natural. Exact controls vary by editor. | Is not necessarily generative AI, and cannot guarantee recovery of areas never photographed. |
| Auto frame or generative reframe | Recomposes the image and may synthesize areas beyond its original boundaries. | Cannot establish that newly generated details match the real scene. |
| Extension or generative fill | Expands the canvas and creates plausible background or cut-off details around it. | Does not retrieve the unrecorded surroundings. |
Try the built-in crop and perspective controls first
If the main problem is a tilted horizon, awkward edges, or a subject sitting too close to the border, ordinary crop and straighten controls may be enough. These edits work with the image you already have. Perspective can help with a skewed view, while crop lets you choose a better balance between the subject and its surroundings.
On Android, Google Photos documents these controls under Edit > Crop. Its Crop tools include Straighten, Rotate, Perspective, aspect ratio, and Mirror. The precise controls available can depend on your device and app support.

Reframe a photo in Google Photos on Android
- Open the photo: In Google Photos, tap the image you want to edit.
- Open the crop tools: Tap Edit, then Crop.
- Try a conventional adjustment: Use Straighten, Perspective, or the crop handles if you only need to correct the existing image.
- Use Auto frame when the composition needs more room: Tap Auto frame. Google says it can recompose a poorly framed or overly cropped photo and may extend the background using AI.
- Review and save: Check the result, tap the checkmark, then tap Save. If the new framing or generated details are unsuitable, use the editor’s undo or reset controls, or keep the original unchanged.
Google’s Help page describes Auto frame as a way to recompose or extend a photo. Availability of editing features varies by device; do not assume every Android phone offers the same tools.

What AI reframing does—and what it makes up
AI reframing can do more than trim or rotate a photo. Google Research’s April 22, 2026 explanation of Auto frame describes a two-stage approach: machine-learning models estimate the scene’s 3D layout and camera position from the 2D image, then the system renders a changed viewpoint and uses generative inpainting to fill areas that were not visible in the original. The result can resemble a wider or differently composed photograph, but the newly filled regions are generated, not recovered evidence.
That distinction matters when accuracy is important. A convincing-looking background, object edge, or newly exposed detail may be a plausible completion rather than a faithful record. The reviewed official materials do not establish a general accuracy rate for these edits.

Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s support instructions, updated January 14, 2026, describe a Gallery workflow: open a photo, tap Edit > Generative edit. The tool can select, reposition, or resize objects, adjust tilt, and fill empty space when you zoom out beyond the image border. Samsung warns that unintended objects may appear in generated results. Its supported-device list can change, so check current Samsung support information for your model.
Apple iPhone
Apple documents Extend and Reframe in Photos for supported Apple Intelligence iPhones running iOS 27 or later. Extend expands the edges of the original photo; Reframe adjusts perspective or the apparent point of capture. Apple says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. Some features may not be available in every language or region, and usage limits may apply. Check Apple’s current eligibility details before relying on a feature.

How to decide whether to keep the result
- For a crooked horizon or skewed building: start with straighten or perspective. These may be sufficient without generating new scene content.
- For a subject too close to the edge: try a crop adjustment first. If there is not enough room in the captured image, an AI reframe or extension may create additional area.
- For a photo that feels like it was taken from the wrong angle: a generative reframe may simulate a different viewpoint, but inspect anything it creates outside the original frame.
- For documentary, work, or evidentiary images: avoid treating generated details as proof of what was present. Keep the original and clearly distinguish edited versions.
Before saving over or sharing an edited image, zoom in on the new edges and any changed objects. If details look inconsistent or the result changes the meaning of the scene, undo the edit or return to the original.
