The “Your PC Did Not Start Correctly” screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start with Windows Startup Repair, then use the recovery option that fits what changed—such as a recent update—before considering a reset or reinstall. The right choice depends on whether Windows can reach its recovery tools and how much data or configuration you can afford to lose.
What the error means
Windows has failed to start normally and has opened, or is directing you to, its recovery tools. A Startup Repair or Automatic Repair loop means the repair attempt has not resolved the underlying startup failure; it does not, by itself, identify the cause. Startup Repair is a built-in tool for certain startup problems, including missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It cannot guarantee a fix for every failure. Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a tool that helps fix issues preventing Windows from starting.
Before using recovery options, locate your BitLocker recovery key if the drive is encrypted. Microsoft says the key is needed for Startup Repair and most WinRE options. Without it, you may be unable to proceed with recovery on an encrypted device.
Try Startup Repair first
- From the recovery screen, select Advanced options if shown.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, enter the BitLocker recovery key if requested, and select Restart.
Startup Repair scans for common startup problems and attempts repairs. If it cannot fix the problem, Microsoft says it provides a report of the issues found. If Windows returns to the same error, move to the recovery option that best matches what happened immediately before the failure rather than repeatedly running the same repair.

Get to Windows Recovery Environment if it is not opening
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is the built-in set of tools used to troubleshoot and recover a Windows installation. Windows may enter WinRE automatically after repeated failed starts. If it keeps returning to the error without showing recovery choices, Microsoft documents this manual route:
- Turn on the PC. When the Windows logo appears, press and hold the power button until the PC shuts down.
- Repeat that interruption once more.
- Turn the PC on a third time. Windows should display Automatic Repair; select Advanced options to enter recovery tools.
This procedure deliberately interrupts startup and forces shutdowns. Use it only to reach recovery, and follow the device maker’s guidance if its instructions differ.

Use installation media if built-in recovery is unavailable
If the PC will not reach WinRE and you do not have a recovery drive or repair disc, use another working PC to create Windows installation media with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool. Boot the affected PC from that media and choose Repair my PC to enter WinRE; do not choose the installation option unless you intend to reinstall Windows. You may need to change the boot order using the PC manufacturer’s instructions. Check Microsoft’s current media-creation requirements for USB capacity and compatibility before preparing a drive. Microsoft’s WinRE guidance explains both the recovery environment and the installation-media route.

Choose the next recovery option by what changed
| Option | When it may fit | Effect on personal files, apps, and settings | Availability and access notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall Updates | The startup problem began after a recent Windows update. | Microsoft says this action does not affect files or apps. The cited guidance does not specify an effect on every setting. | In WinRE: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates. A BitLocker key may be required for WinRE. |
| System Restore | You have a suitable restore point and suspect a recent system change. | Rolls back system files and settings, not personal files. It can affect recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings. | Available in Windows 10 and Windows 11 through WinRE. A BitLocker key may be required. |
| Quick Machine Recovery | Repeated startup failure is associated with a known widespread issue for which Microsoft has provided a fix. | Does not reset the PC or affect files, apps, or settings. | For Windows 11 version 24H2 or later when enabled. Microsoft says it is enabled by default on Home; an administrator may need to enable it on Pro or Enterprise devices. Requires a connection through WinRE to Windows Update. |
| Reset this PC | Less disruptive recovery options have failed and you are ready to reinstall Windows. | Offers a choice to keep or remove personal files; apps and settings are removed. | Available through recovery options. A BitLocker key may be required. |
| Reinstall from installation media | You need to reinstall Windows, or built-in recovery is unavailable. | Setup can offer choices to keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or remove everything. A clean installation removes personal files, apps, and settings. | Requires installation media and booting from it. Read each setup choice carefully before proceeding. |
These options and their scope are documented in Microsoft’s Windows recovery-options guide.

If the problem followed an update
In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates. This is the more targeted choice when the timing points to a recent update. If it does not help, consider System Restore only if a suitable restore point exists.
If you have a restore point
System Restore rolls system files and settings back to the state captured by a restore point, without rolling back personal files. Because it can affect more recent apps, drivers, updates, and settings, use it when that trade-off fits the timeline of the failure.

If Windows 11 may have a known widespread startup issue
Quick Machine Recovery can connect through WinRE to Windows Update and apply a Microsoft-provided fix automatically when the feature is enabled and the failure matches a known widespread issue. It is not a general-purpose repair for every startup loop. Windows 11 Home has it enabled by default according to Microsoft; on Pro and Enterprise, an administrator may need to enable it.

Reset and reinstall are more consequential than Startup Repair, update removal, or System Restore. With Reset this PC, read the keep-or-remove-files choice carefully: even the keep-files route removes apps and settings. Reinstalling from installation media has different setup choices, including keeping both personal files and apps, keeping files only, or removing everything. A clean installation removes personal files, apps, and settings; do not treat it as equivalent to a repair attempt.

If factory apps or hardware-specific drivers matter, check with the PC manufacturer about recovery media. Microsoft notes that an OEM recovery image may include drivers and factory apps that generic Windows installation media does not.
Use command-line boot repair only when the evidence fits
Commands such as BOOTREC /FIXMBR, BOOTREC /FIXBOOT, Bootrec /ScanOS, and BCD rebuild steps address specific boot-loader problems. They are not universal fixes for the “Your PC Did Not Start Correctly” message. Microsoft Learn’s boot troubleshooting guidance associates boot-loader-phase problems with evidence such as missing or corrupt BCD, boot files, MBR, boot sector, or Bootmgr. It also warns that Fixmbr may not resolve an issue when MBR corruption affects the partition table.
If Startup Repair ran from installation media, its log is at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt, according to Microsoft Learn. For certain kernel-phase failures, Microsoft’s guidance instead points to Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking and reviewing Event Viewer if Windows starts that way. Offline system-file checks and pending-update rollback are also scenario-specific. WinRE drive letters may differ from those used during normal Windows operation, so do not copy command sequences from a generic checklist without confirming the installation path and the diagnosed fault. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows startup troubleshooting guidance.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. The PC can continue to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11; whether a particular PC is eligible depends on that device.
