Yes, color ePaper is improving, but current tablets still make a deliberate trade: they offer sunlight-readable, low-power screens with a paper-like surface, while color remains softer and less detailed than on an LCD or OLED. E Ink’s Kaleido 4 announcement points to a meaningful near-term improvement, but today’s retail choices are still mostly Kaleido 3 devices.

What Kaleido 4 changes

E Ink announced Kaleido 4 on October 15, 2026. The company says the new platform delivers a larger color gamut, brighter whites, stronger contrast and faster motion than the previous generation.

Claimed Kaleido 4 improvement Manufacturer figure What it should mean in use
Color-gamut volume More than 40,000 More distinguishable colors and less of the washed-out look associated with earlier color ePaper.
White reflectance 15% higher Whiter page backgrounds and a brighter-looking image in ambient light.
Contrast 50% higher Darker text and more separation between illustrations, charts and the page.
Video playback Up to 18 frames per second Smoother motion than traditional ePaper modes, although still not equivalent to a conventional tablet display.

The first announced product using the platform is Hanvon’s M10C II smart ePaper notebook. E Ink says that device turns pages and scrolls 27% faster, attributing the result to an oxide TFT backplane, higher driving voltages, faster refresh electronics and Hanvon’s controller and software. Those figures are manufacturer-reported launch results, not independent testing, and the announcement does not establish the notebook’s retail price, availability in every region or final hands-on performance.

E Ink CEO Johnson Lee summarized the company’s position this way: “Color ePaper needs to deliver more than simply ‘color.’” The practical test for buyers will be whether products using the new platform deliver visibly brighter pages, cleaner detail and more responsive writing at a price they can actually buy.

Why current color ePaper can look muted

Kaleido uses a color-filter array

Kaleido combines a TFT backplane, an ink layer, a color-filter layer and a protective sheet. The filter sits above the black-and-white ink, allowing the display to show color images while preserving the reflective, low-power behavior of ePaper. E Ink specifies 16 levels of grayscale and 4,096 colors for the platform.

The filter also explains the characteristic compromise. It reduces the amount of light reaching the ink compared with a bare monochrome panel, so colors can appear pastel or grayish and the page can look darker without front lighting. Kaleido is designed for charts, maps, photos, comics and other image-rich content, not for matching the saturation of a phone or laptop.

  • Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
  • Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off‌: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.

Color detail is lower than black-and-white detail

On current Kaleido 3 products, monochrome content is rendered at 300 pixels per inch while color content is rendered at 150 ppi. Text remains sharp when it is displayed as black-and-white ink, but colored labels, comic art and highlighted passages have fewer addressable color pixels. This is why a color ePaper page can look crisp for a novel yet visibly softer for a color PDF or illustration.

Kaleido and Gallery are different technologies

Not every E Ink color technology solves the problem in the same way. Gallery is based on Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP), which places multiple colored particles in every pixel rather than putting a color-filter array over a monochrome ink layer. E Ink says four colored particles create a full gamut that includes eight primary colors.

Characteristic Kaleido Gallery / ACeP
How color is produced Color-filter array over an ink layer Colored particles in each pixel
Filter layer Yes No
Typical strength Commercially available color readers and tablets with low-power, sunlight-readable operation Full-color pixels without filter-layer light attenuation
Motion expectation Refresh behavior depends on the device and its software Full-color capability alone does not guarantee fast, tablet-like refresh

The absence of a filter can improve light efficiency, but “full color” does not automatically mean fast animation, high saturation or a better note-taking experience. Panel generation, controller electronics, firmware and front-light design still matter.

Which type fits your reading and writing?

Choose a current Kaleido 3 reader for everyday color reading

A Kaleido 3 model makes sense if your priority is color book covers, comics, maps, diagrams, highlighted passages and outdoor reading today. You get direct-sunlight readability and the low-power behavior associated with monochrome ePaper, with color added for reference and navigation rather than vivid entertainment.

Choose Android when app flexibility matters

The Go Color 7 is the more flexible architecture of the two examples: Android, 64GB internal storage and microSD support leave room for multiple reading services, file types and offline libraries. That flexibility also means more settings and more variation in how individual apps handle page turns, color images and refresh modes.

Choose a focused reading ecosystem for annotation and library use

Libra Colour is oriented around reading, highlighting and handwritten notes. Its page-turn buttons, waterproof rating, built-in front-light controls and support for library borrowing where available reduce the need to assemble a general-purpose tablet workflow. Confirm that the library service you use is supported in your country before buying.

Wait for a Kaleido 4 product when display improvement is the priority

Kaleido 4 is the more promising option if brighter whites, stronger contrast and smoother refresh matter more than buying immediately. However, a platform announcement is not a retail specification sheet. Wait until a particular model has a confirmed price, regional availability, storage, pen support, battery rating and independent hands-on results.

What to check before purchasing

  • Color resolution: verify separate black-and-white and color ppi figures. A “300 ppi” headline may describe only monochrome content.
  • Refresh behavior: look for the device’s available refresh modes, ghosting behavior and page-turn speed. Manufacturer frame-rate claims are not substitutes for independent testing.
  • Writing hardware: confirm whether a pen is included, optional or unsupported, and check expected latency for the note-taking app you plan to use.
  • Front lighting: check whether the device offers adjustable warmth, because a warmer light can change how muted colors appear.
  • Storage and files: compare fixed storage with microSD expansion, plus the document formats and cloud services you actually use.
  • Durability: an IP rating, physical page-turn buttons and a replaceable or included case can matter more than a small specification advantage.
  • Total cost: add the price of a stylus, cover and any replacement accessories. Retail prices and stock change by country and over time.

The practical verdict

Color ePaper is not suddenly an LCD replacement. Today’s Kaleido 3 tablets remain best for readers who value sunlight readability, long battery life and a paper-like surface more than saturated color or fast animation. Their 150 ppi color layer and filter-based design explain the faded-newspaper impression.

Kaleido 4 is a credible near-term step rather than a guarantee that every next tablet will look dramatically different. Its announced gamut, reflectance, contrast and motion gains address the right weaknesses, but the first products must still prove their price, availability, writing response and real-world color performance.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
