Start with the project’s own contribution guide, choose a small, clearly scoped issue, and follow its rules for setup, testing, and review. If you’re contributing to GitLab itself, use GitLab’s community-fork onboarding; if you’re contributing to another project hosted on GitLab, follow that project’s instructions instead. For a small change, the Web IDE can let you edit and open a merge request in your browser.

1. Check the project’s contribution rules and choose an issue

Read the target repository’s contribution guide and Code of Conduct before editing. A GitLab-hosted project can set its own required branch names, tests, permissions, and review process, so GitLab’s own contributor workflow is not universal.

Search the issue tracker for an existing report or proposal before creating a new one. For GitLab’s own project, its contributor guide recommends issues labeled quick win::first-time contributor for beginners. Labels and assignments can change, so check the issue’s current status. If someone is already working on it, ask whether collaboration is welcome; if the requested change is unclear, agree on scope before doing substantial work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For GitLab project issues, GitLab says contributors can ask @gitlab-bot help for help validating an issue or connecting with a merge request coach. If a matching issue already exists, join its discussion rather than opening a duplicate.

2. Complete the right onboarding

Contributing to GitLab itself

Follow GitLab’s contributor onboarding and request access to its community forks. GitLab says access is manually verified and should take no more than a few hours; that is its stated expectation, not a guarantee. You can begin local work while access is pending, but you cannot push to the community fork until access is granted. GitLab also recommends joining its Discord community.

Contributing to another GitLab-hosted project

Follow that repository’s onboarding and permission instructions. Community-fork access is part of GitLab’s own contribution process, not a requirement for every project hosted on GitLab.

3. Choose how to make the change

Route Best fit Trade-off
Web IDE A small edit, typo fix, or first change that the project supports editing in a browser. No local installation is needed, but browser editing may not be enough when specialized tools or local testing are required.
Local development Changes that need local testing or, for GitLab itself, development against a local GitLab instance. More setup and hardware resources are needed. GitLab’s tutorial lists its GDK-in-a-box image as a 10 GB download and says standalone GDK installation and configuration can take up to two hours. These are GitLab’s estimates, not guarantees.

GitLab describes the Web IDE as a way to change code or fix a typo and create a merge request from the browser. For GitLab development, its tutorial also presents GDK-in-a-box and standalone GDK as local options; GDK can be resource-intensive. For another project, check whether its instructions require a local environment or particular tooling.

4. Make a focused change on the right branch

If you lack write access to the upstream project, make your change in a fork and submit it upstream. GitLab’s fork workflow guidance also says that forks do not copy issues, merge requests, or wiki pages. If you already have write access, a branch in the original project may be sufficient, subject to its rules.

For GitLab itself, the contributor guide asks you to work on a branch in the community fork. Use the target project’s naming conventions. GitLab’s Web IDE tutorial recommends beginning a branch name with the issue number when the change addresses an issue.

  • Keep the patch limited to the agreed task.
  • Explain why the change is needed in the issue or merge request.
  • Organize commits logically, and follow the project’s squash policy if it has one.

5. Test the change and prepare a useful description

Follow the repository’s test instructions and run the tests appropriate to your change. GitLab’s contributor guide says automated testing is required, and its merge-request workflow expects appropriate tests and passing results, with documented exceptions such as a test that exposes an existing bug. Report only tests you actually ran; do not describe a test as passing if you have not run it.

6. Open the merge request against the upstream project

In a fork-based merge request, select your branch in the fork as the source and the upstream repository’s intended branch as the target. GitLab warns that visibility differences can affect the default target, so confirm both repository and branch before submitting. For GitLab’s own contribution tutorial, the specified target is GitLab’s master branch; other projects may use a different default or target branch.

  1. Open the project’s merge request creation flow.
  2. Set the source to your fork and contribution branch.
  3. Set the target to the upstream repository and the branch required by its instructions.
  4. Review the source and target selections, title, description, and test information before submitting.

If the work is not ready for review, GitLab’s first-contribution walkthrough says you can create an incomplete merge request and mark it as a draft, then complete it later.

7. Respond to review and CI feedback

A merge request starts review; it does not guarantee acceptance. GitLab says contributions are usually reviewed by domain experts, typically a reviewer and a maintainer. Expect comments or requested changes. For GitLab contributions, its guidance says to comment @gitlab-bot ready after pushing requested changes to signal that the merge request is ready for review again.

GitLab’s documented workflow includes at least one approval and a maintainer merge among its acceptance criteria. If CI fails, first determine whether the failure is caused by your change. GitLab’s workflow suggests retrying a failing job, rebasing, or asking a developer for help if a failure appears unrelated.

Which route should you take?

  • Choose the Web IDE for a small change when the project supports browser editing and you can meet its testing requirements that way.
  • Choose local development when the change needs tools, tests, or an application environment unavailable in the browser.
  • Use a fork when you do not have upstream write access; use a branch in the original project only when your access and project policy allow it.

For GitLab’s own contribution flow, all contributions must be submitted in English, according to its development contribution guide. Other projects may state different requirements in their own instructions.
