Yes—Debian is accepting community artwork proposals for Forky, Debian 14, with submissions due 26 November 2026. To take part, create a proposal page under DebianArt/Themes and add it to the Forky artwork page. A wallpaper or other single image is welcome; you do not have to create a complete desktop theme.

What Debian is looking for

The selected release artwork may appear in the installer, boot screen, login screen and desktop wallpaper. Debian describes it as one of the first things people see when they install or boot the system.

The current Debian call says proposals are usually judged on a recognizable Debian feel, the ability to integrate without patching core software, and a clean design that remains comfortable over time. “Debian feel” is open to interpretation; practical fit matters too. Designs that depend on heavy GTK theming or changes to GDM/GNOME may be harder to integrate.

  • Identity: Connect the concept to Debian while leaving room for different interpretations.
  • Integration: Consider how the artwork will work across the release experience without requiring changes to core software.
  • Long-term comfort: Aim for a clean design that remains pleasant to see over time.
  • Completeness: Include a suitable distribution license and be prepared to provide editable source files if selected.

How to submit a proposal

  1. Create a proposal page under DebianArt/Themes, following the Forky page’s instructions.
  2. Add your proposal to the Forky artwork page so it is listed with the other entries.
  3. Write a line or two explaining the concept and state the distribution license, as outlined in Debian’s general artwork requirements.
  4. If your design is selected, provide source files suitable for future modification with free software.

You can discuss ideas with the Debian Desktop community on its mailing list or in the #debian-desktop IRC channel. A proposal can be a wallpaper or another image; a full theme is not required.

Deadline, voting and current proposals

The current submission deadline is 26 November 2026. The original call gave 12 September 2026, but Debian extended the deadline on 26 September. The current blog announcement and Forky wiki page reflect the revised date. See the deadline extension notice for the change.

After submissions close, the wiki estimates that voting will take one to three weeks, hopefully closer to one week. That is an estimate rather than a fixed schedule. The Forky page currently lists concepts including Alborz, Aquatis, Beach Day, Cutlery, Fireflies, Spiral Fork and Orange. Being listed does not mean a proposal has been selected.
