Google has announced four Android protections aimed at the points where scams commonly reach you: messages, notification previews, screen sharing and phone-call routing. Availability will be staged rather than universal. Enhanced Protection in Google Messages is opt-in, the newest link checks need recent flagship hardware, screen-share privacy needs Android 15 or later, and call-forwarding alerts begin rolling out in early December on Pixels and other selected phones.
What is changing
The announcement, reported by Android Authority on October 14, 2026, adds separate safeguards for different scam tactics. They are not a single Android-wide switch, and Google has not published a controlled study showing how many scams the features prevent. Your phone may receive them at different times depending on its model, software version and the app involved.

1. Enhanced Protection in Google Messages
Enhanced Protection is an opt-in mode inside Google Messages. It combines secure cloud analysis with warnings for links sent by unfamiliar numbers. Gemini Nano adds on-device protection against malicious links, giving the app another way to identify suspicious destinations before you open them.

The newest protection is designed to catch brand-new malicious domains that have not yet been catalogued. That matters because scam campaigns can register a domain shortly before sending messages; a conventional reputation list may not contain it yet. This capability is limited to newer hardware: Google lists Pixel 10 and later, the Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z8 foldable and other selected devices. Google has not stated that every phone running the latest Android version will qualify.

What to expect
- You must actively opt in; it is not described as an automatic setting for every Messages user.
- Warnings are a prompt to stop and verify, not proof that a message is fraudulent or a guarantee that every scam will be detected.
- Cloud analysis and Gemini Nano are complementary: the mode can use secure cloud checks while supported phones perform additional malicious-link analysis on the device.
2. Scam Detection expands to chat notifications
Android is expanding Scam Detection warnings beyond the Messages conversation itself so that suspicious chat content can be flagged when it appears in a notification. This targets the moment when people often react quickly from the lock screen or notification shade.
The global expansion is being delivered through HONOR, Infinix, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, TECNO, vivo and Xiaomi. The announcement does not establish that every model from those manufacturers receives the feature at once; phone model, regional software build and staged rollout can affect availability.

3. Screen sharing can hide sensitive fields automatically
When you share your Android screen, the system will automatically hide login fields and payment screens instead of exposing them to everyone in the call or recording. The protection applies when those screens are presented through Chrome or Android System WebView.
Compatibility
- Android 15 or newer is required.
- The protected content must be rendered in Chrome or Android System WebView.
- Apps using a different browser engine or a custom screen may not receive the same automatic masking.
This feature reduces accidental exposure; it does not make the rest of a shared screen private. Close unrelated apps, notifications and documents before presenting, and stop sharing before entering information that the operating system cannot identify as a login or payment field.

4. Android will warn about hidden call forwarding
Android will warn you when an app attempts to enable call forwarding in the background. Criminals can abuse forwarding to redirect verification calls, including calls carrying one-time-password assistance, to a number they control. A system warning gives you a chance to reject an unexpected change rather than discovering it after an account takeover.
Rollout starts in early December on Pixel phones and other selected devices. The announcement does not specify a universal Android version requirement or a final list of supported models, so check your phone’s system-update notes when the feature becomes available. Legitimate forwarding that you knowingly configure should still be distinguishable from an unsolicited background request; investigate any alert you did not initiate.

How to use the protections safely
- Install available Android and app updates, then check Google Messages settings for the opt-in Enhanced Protection control.
- If you own a recently released Pixel, Galaxy or other selected device, look for the newer malicious-link protection after updating; unsupported hardware may receive only the other Messages warnings.
- Keep Android 15 or later and current Chrome or Android System WebView builds if automatic masking during screen sharing is important to you.
- Treat notification and link warnings as a pause signal: do not open the link, disclose a code or install an app until you independently confirm who contacted you.
- When a call-forwarding warning appears, cancel it unless you deliberately started the change through your carrier or phone settings, then review forwarding status with your carrier if anything looks wrong.
What these features do not establish
Google’s announcement describes the protections and rollout plans, not measured effectiveness. There is no independent test result or controlled study showing a specific reduction in scam losses. The features also do not replace carrier fraud controls, account-based multifactor authentication, app permissions or careful verification of unexpected requests.
