Short answer: Some phones can detect a SIM that is inserted while they are powered on, but turning the phone off before removing or inserting a physical SIM is the safest, manufacturer-documented method. Google Pixel instructions start the tray procedure with “With your phone off,” and Samsung’s Galaxy instructions say to power off before opening the tray. After you reinsert the card and turn the phone on, the device may need a restart before cellular service returns.

Why powering down is the safer choice

A SIM is part of the phone’s cellular identity and network authentication. A live phone may recognize a newly inserted card, but removing or inserting the tray while the modem is operating can leave the device temporarily confused, fail to register with the carrier, or produce messages such as “No SIM card” and “Emergency calls only.” Powering down stops the cellular radio and gives the phone a clean start when it reads the replacement card.

Manufacturer guidance is consistent on the physical step. Google Pixel device-support instructions say “With your phone off:” before the ejection and insertion steps. Samsung Support says, “Power off your phone and locate the SIM tray on the side of the device.” Apple’s iPhone documentation explains tray ejection and card orientation but does not promise that a live swap is risk-free. These are safety-oriented procedures, not a claim that every powered-on swap will fail.

How to change a physical SIM safely

  1. Finish anything in progress. End calls, save unsent messages and close work that you do not want interrupted. A SIM change can temporarily remove cellular service.
  2. Power the phone off. Use the normal power menu rather than simply locking the screen.
  3. Find the correct tray hole. Insert the phone’s SIM-eject tool straight into the tray’s eject point. A straightened paper clip is acceptable only where the manufacturer permits it. Do not poke microphone or speaker openings, and never force the tool.
  4. Remove the tray carefully. Keep it level so the card does not fall out. Note the tray’s orientation before removing the old SIM.
  5. Seat the replacement nano-SIM. Match the card’s angled notch to the tray and place the gold contacts in the orientation shown by the tray. The card should lie flat without bending or pressure.
  6. Reinsert the tray fully. Slide it in the same orientation until it is flush with the phone. A partially inserted tray can prevent detection or compromise the phone’s water resistance.
  7. Power on and wait for registration. Give the phone time to display the carrier name or signal bars. Google notes that a restart may be required if mobile service does not appear.
  8. Test the line. Check a call, text message and mobile-data connection. If the line remains unavailable, follow the troubleshooting steps below before repeatedly removing the tray.

Apple’s support guidance, published March 20, 2026, adds two model-specific cautions: use only the tray supplied for that iPhone model, and push the eject tool toward the phone without forcing it. Some iPhone models have no physical tray at all; those models support eSIM only. Apple also warns that voicemail messages may not be available after a SIM swap, so check voicemail after service is restored.

Physical SIM versus eSIM

If both the phone and carrier support eSIM, you may not need to open the phone. An eSIM is a software profile activated through the phone’s settings, a carrier transfer process or a QR code. Support varies by phone model, software version, country or region and carrier.

Consideration Physical SIM eSIM
Phone requirement A working SIM tray and compatible nano-SIM A model with eSIM hardware and software support; some models have no tray
Activation method Insert the activated card, then power on Carrier transfer, an on-screen setup flow or a carrier-provided QR code
Switching while traveling Move a card between compatible phones Download or switch profiles without handling a card, if the carrier permits it
Two-line use Depends on the phone’s dual-SIM design Many supported phones can assign separate lines for calls, texts and data
Recovery if activation fails Reseat the card, try a known-good compatible SIM or contact the carrier Retry the carrier setup or QR process; the carrier may need to reissue or re-enable the profile

What eSIM settings can do

On supported Google Pixel phones, settings let you choose which SIM handles mobile data, calls and texts, temporarily turn a SIM off, or erase an eSIM. Google’s current Pixel documentation lists broad eSIM support beginning with Pixel 4, while noting model and regional exceptions. Samsung documents transferring a SIM profile and phone number from another device or scanning a carrier-supplied QR code. The exact menu names and availability depend on the model, software release and operator.

Fixing “No SIM,” “SIM not detected” or “Emergency calls only”

  • Check seating and orientation. Power off again, remove the tray and verify that the notch and contacts match the tray diagram. Make sure the tray is completely inserted.
  • Restart once. A fresh boot can trigger carrier registration after a swap.
  • Inspect SIM status. Open the phone’s cellular or SIM settings and confirm that the line is enabled. On a dual-SIM phone, make sure the intended line is selected for data and calls.
  • Check the card itself. A damaged, inactive or unsupported SIM will not register. Samsung recommends cleaning a dirty card with a soft, dry cloth; do not use metal objects on the gold contacts.
  • Confirm carrier activation and compatibility. A replacement card may need activation, an account change or a phone that supports the carrier’s network bands and SIM type.
  • Ask about SIM-protection services. Some carriers place a SIM-change lock or fraud-prevention hold on an account. The carrier must remove or verify that protection before the new card can work.

Do not keep forcing the tray or repeatedly inserting the card. If a known-compatible, activated SIM still fails after a restart, contact the carrier and ask whether the line is active and whether the device or account is blocked.

What a SIM swap does—and does not do

Changing a SIM changes which cellular account the phone uses. It can interrupt calls, texts, mobile data and voicemail access until the new line registers. It does not by itself erase photos, apps or other storage on the phone. Keep that distinction in mind when troubleshooting: a service outage after the swap is normally a registration, activation or compatibility problem, not evidence that the phone’s data has been deleted.

When a powered-on swap is reasonable

If you are in an emergency and the phone is already unlocked, a live swap may be detected and can restore service without a full shutdown. Avoid doing this during a call or while the tray is under pressure, and be prepared to restart afterward. For routine changes, the extra minute needed to power down is the more reliable workflow and matches the documented instructions from major phone manufacturers.
