To keep a Yii2 admin account and a merchant account signed in at the same time in one browser, the application must store each context’s authenticated identity under a distinct session parameter and, when remember-me is enabled, a distinct identity-cookie name. A proposed Yii2 approach also prefixes ordinary session keys and flash messages by context. This is an implementation pattern to validate in your application, not a tested or framework-endorsed guarantee of isolation.

How Yii2 keeps a user signed in

Yii’s yiiwebUser application component manages authentication state. With sessions enabled, Yii stores identity information in session so it can restore authentication on later requests. If auto-login is used, an identity cookie can also restore the identity. The component’s idParam setting names the session parameter used for that identity. See the Yii User API.

If two contexts use the same identity parameter and cookie, a login in one context may overwrite or conflict with the other context’s authentication state. The proposed strategy is to select a different idParam and identity-cookie name for each context, such as admin and merchant.

Choose and apply a context boundary

The example approach selects a context from URL path prefixes, then configures the User component accordingly. That is one possible boundary, not a universal tenant-isolation rule. Use a routing or application boundary that reliably distinguishes the contexts, and ensure it is determined consistently for every request.

For each context, the selected identity parameter and cookie name must remain consistent through login, logout, auto-login restoration, and redirects. A mismatch at any of these points can make authentication appear to disappear or be restored under the wrong context.

Decide how much session state to separate

Separate identity parameters and identity cookies address the authenticated identity. The proposed pattern goes further by prefixing ordinary session keys and isolating flash data by context. That broader isolation can help prevent unrelated context data from colliding, but it also changes how session values are addressed throughout the application.

Before applying a prefix broadly, inspect session and flash usage in modules, extensions, and shared workflows. Confirm that every component that writes or reads these values uses the same context-aware convention. The available sources do not establish compatibility across all Yii components or request lifecycles.

Verify login, logout, and session ID behavior

Yii’s logout behavior matters when contexts share a session store. The default logout removes session data; logout(false) retains it. Test each context’s logout path and confirm that signing out of one account does not unexpectedly remove or preserve state belonging to the other. Yii also documents session ID regeneration when switching identity; verify the result in both contexts rather than assuming separate identity parameters alone isolate every effect. See the Yii User API.

  • Sign in to admin, then merchant, and check that each context still shows its own identity.
  • Repeat with remember-me enabled, then reload or revisit each context to check cookie-based restoration.
  • Log out of each context separately and verify the other context’s expected state.
  • Exercise redirects and session ID regeneration during identity changes, including any shared application flows.

Set cookie and CSRF protections for deployment

Cookie settings must match the actual deployment. Yii documents secure and httpOnly cookie controls, as well as SameSite support beginning with Yii 2.0.21. The example configuration sets secure to false; do not copy that value into an HTTPS production deployment without reviewing the application’s cookie configuration. Keep CSRF protection enabled unless a specific, reviewed design justifies a change. See the Yii security guide.

What this pattern does not establish

Distinct identity parameters and cookie names, even with prefixed session keys, should not be treated as proof that two tenant contexts are securely isolated. The cited material does not provide test results for a particular Yii release, application topology, or tenant security model, nor does it establish compatibility with every component. Validate the behavior in the target application and review authorization, shared storage, routing, and session lifecycle as part of its security design.
