YETI’s Skala is a capable hiking-pack range, but “proper hiking backpack” is a judgment—not a category—and comfort depends on the size, load, and fit. In a review published 28 August 2026, Peter Wolinski of Tom’s Guide reported using the 32L and 50L models for several months on hikes, camping trips, travel, flights, and commutes. He praised their adjustability, storage, comfort, and weight distribution, while flagging their high price and the lack of an included waterproof cover. A separate review of the 60L model found a less comfortable experience under a heavy load.
What the summer test found
Wolinski’s Tom’s Guide review covered the Skala 32L and 50L over several months and across more than hiking alone. He reported excellent weight distribution, substantial storage, a highly adjustable harness, comfort, and solid build quality, and recommended the packs for single- and multi-day trips. His verdict was: “It might be pricey, but the Yeti Skala backpack makes up for its cost with copious adjustability, excellent weight distribution and supreme comfort.” Tom’s Guide review, 28 August 2026
That favorable experience is not a guarantee for every wearer or load. Outside reviewed the Skala 32 and 60, focusing on the 60L. The publication lists the 60L at 4.6 lb and praises its capacity, organization, and materials, but also identifies its weight, limited organization while moving, and comfort relative to similar packs as drawbacks. Its reviewer reported that a 33 lb overnight load tended to lean backward and pull on their shoulders after a few hours. That is one reviewer’s experience with a particular pack and load, not a universal result. Outside review
Which Skala size suits your trip?
YETI describes the 32L and 40L as day-hike options, with the 40L offering more room for longer days and extra gear. It positions the 50L for weekend and overnight use, including a dedicated sleeping-bag compartment, and the 60L for longer, off-grid trips. The weights and dimensions below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements. YETI Hiking Pack Buyer’s Guide 2026

| Capacity | YETI’s stated use | Listed weight | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32L | Day hiking | 3.3 lb | 11.75 × 10.25 × 24.5 in |
| 40L | Longer day hikes and additional gear | 3.4 lb | 12.5 × 11.25 × 25.25 in |
| 50L | Weekend and overnight trips; dedicated sleeping-bag compartment | 4.5 lb | 12.75 × 13.25 × 26.75 in |
| 60L | Longer, off-grid trips | 4.6 lb | 13.5 × 14 × 27.5 in |
For a typical day hike, start by considering the 32L; choose the 40L if the extra room is useful for your gear or longer outings. The 50L and 60L are the larger options for overnight and extended trips, but a higher capacity also means carrying a larger pack. Before deciding, compare the expected packed load and how the harness feels on your body—not capacity alone.
How the design is meant to carry and organize gear
YETI lists an AlumaLite frame, load lifters, padded contoured shoulder straps, a vented mesh back panel, and up to eight inches of harness adjustment. The range also features RipZip access, internal and external pockets, and Guardcore nylon. Those are manufacturer-listed features; Wolinski’s positive observations about comfort and weight distribution are reviewer experience, rather than proof that the fit will work equally well for everyone. The Outside review adds a practical reason to assess a loaded pack before committing to a long hike: its reviewer described backward pull and shoulder discomfort with a 33 lb load in the 60L. Pack size, load, and fit differ, so the account should inform—not replace—a fit check with your own likely gear weight.

Rain protection
YETI describes the Skala as water-resistant, not completely waterproof. Tom’s Guide also notes that a waterproof cover is not included. Plan additional protection for contents that must stay dry in sustained rain, and do not assume the pack itself is waterproof. YETI Skala FAQ

Flying with a Skala
According to YETI, the 32L and 40L should fit in most overhead bins, while the 50L is unlikely to be accepted by most airlines as carry-on. Airline size limits and enforcement vary, so check the current rules for your carrier and itinerary rather than relying on the capacity label alone. YETI Skala FAQ

Price and value
YETI’s US catalog listed these prices when accessed on 7 October 2026. They are dated catalog figures, not guaranteed checkout prices; verify the current price before buying. YETI US backpack catalog
| Capacity | Listed US price on 7 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| 32L | $300 |
| 40L | $325 |
| 50L | $375 |
| 60L | $400 |
The central value question is whether the Skala’s adjustability, storage, and construction suit your use enough to justify its price. Tom’s Guide’s 32L and 50L assessment was strongly positive, while Outside’s account of the 60L makes loaded comfort an important point to check. Compare packs at the same capacity and with a similar load; comparisons based only on an empty pack or its feature list can miss how it carries on a hike.
