Often, yes: connect a streaming player to a monitor with HDMI and you can watch internet video apps on it. Before buying anything, check that the monitor and every device in the connection support the content’s copy protection, and work out how you’ll hear the audio. For antenna channels, you’ll also need a tuner; a streaming stick does not receive broadcast TV.

What to check before you buy anything

Start with the monitor’s rear panel or manual. Identify its input—HDMI, DVI, VGA, or DisplayPort—and its resolution. HDMI is usually the simplest connection. If the monitor only has another input, an adapter or converter may work, but compatibility depends on the signal direction, supported resolution, audio path, and HDCP support.

HDCP is copy protection used for some video. Google says its streaming devices require a display with HDCP 1.3 or higher; its requirements specify HDCP 2.2 for 4K. The monitor, cable, adapter, and any other device in the connection can affect whether protected video plays. Google’s streaming-device requirements also call for a 4K display and at least 20 Mbps internet for 4K playback. That speed is Google’s platform requirement, not a guarantee of 4K streaming under every network condition.

Finally, check sound. HDMI can carry audio and video, but the monitor needs speakers or a usable audio output. VGA carries no audio, so a VGA setup needs a separate audio solution.

Choose a setup based on the content and monitor

Setup Best for Check first
Streaming player connected directly by HDMI Internet video apps on an HDMI monitor HDCP support, resolution, speakers or audio output, Wi-Fi, and app subscriptions
HDMI streaming player with audio accessory An HDMI monitor without useful built-in audio Whether the monitor has a headphone or line output; the accessory’s supported audio formats and HDCP compatibility
HDMI-to-VGA adapter A VGA-only monitor, where the content and adapter are compatible Signal direction, supported resolution, separate audio, and protected-content compatibility
Digital tuner or converter with a compatible output Over-the-air antenna broadcasts That the tuner’s output matches the monitor’s input, and that its audio and output formats work with the display

These options solve different problems: a streaming player provides app-based video over the internet, while antenna channels require a tuner or converter. A monitor does not become a broadcast television just because it can display video.

Connect a streaming player to an HDMI monitor

  1. Identify the input. Check the monitor’s rear panel or manual and confirm that it has HDMI. If it does not, verify the adapter’s signal direction and compatibility before purchasing it.
  2. Check HDCP. Confirm that the monitor and any adapter or intermediary support the protection level needed by the content and streaming platform. For Google streaming devices, the published baseline is HDCP 1.3 or higher, with HDCP 2.2 specified for 4K. Google’s requirements page lists the platform’s display and internet requirements.
  3. Connect the player and select the input. Connect the streaming device to the monitor’s HDMI port, then use the monitor’s input control to choose that HDMI input. Roku’s player setup guidance describes HDMI as the connection to a compatible display; HP’s monitor troubleshooting guidance also advises selecting the matching input.
  4. Test the sound. Play a short video and confirm you can hear it. If the monitor has no speakers, use an audio output the monitor supports, compatible external speakers, or suitable extraction hardware. Check the audio accessory’s supported formats and HDCP compatibility before relying on it.
  5. Check apps and network access. Connect the streaming player to Wi-Fi and confirm that the apps you want are available for your device and region. Subscriptions or additional terms may apply, as Google notes on its requirements page.

How to get sound from a monitor without speakers

Find out whether the monitor has a headphone or line output before choosing an audio accessory. If it does, that may provide a way to connect speakers; otherwise, the player or an HDMI audio extractor may need to provide a separate audio path. Confirm that the chosen equipment works with the player’s audio format and does not break the HDCP-compatible connection.

Do not expect VGA to carry sound. Apple’s adapter guidance notes that VGA does not transmit audio, and that some movies and streaming apps require an HDCP-compatible connection.

What changes if you want antenna channels?

A streaming player is not a TV tuner. To watch over-the-air broadcasts, you need an antenna and a digital tuner or converter whose video output matches an input on the monitor. Check the tuner’s exact output, resolution, and audio options before buying; the monitor must accept the signal, and you need a workable sound path.

Fix a blank screen or HDCP error

If protected video does not display, the problem may be the monitor, cable, adapter, or another device between the player and display. Roku explains that a noncompliant HDMI link can produce an HDCP error or reduce the available resolution. Roku’s HDCP troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and compatible equipment.

  • Confirm that the monitor is set to the input where the player is connected.
  • Try a different HDMI cable or monitor input, if available.
  • Connect the player directly to the monitor to test whether an adapter or other intermediary is causing the problem.
  • If you are using an adapter, verify its signal direction, resolution support, and HDCP compatibility. A VGA adapter may work for some video, but it is not a reliable workaround for protected streaming content.

Adapter compatibility varies. For example, one HDMI-to-VGA adapter specification warns that protected services may not display. That warning applies to that product; it does not establish how every adapter performs.

When the conversion makes sense

Using a monitor as a screen for a streaming player is practical when the monitor has a compatible input, its HDCP support meets the content’s requirements, and you have a separate sound plan if needed. If you want antenna broadcasts, add a compatible tuner; if the monitor or connection cannot handle protected content, an adapter alone may not solve the problem.
