Yes—AirPods can record sound as a microphone in some workflows, but whether they work depends on the AirPods model, app, device, operating-system version and, for one camera feature, your region. Apple documents AirPods microphone support in certain iPhone and iPad camera apps; for Voice Memos or GarageBand, check the input source shown in the app rather than assuming AirPods will be selectable.
What do you mean by “record songs”?
If you mean capturing your singing, an instrument, or another live sound, AirPods may serve as a microphone input in supported setups. If you mean saving or copying the digital audio of a song playing through AirPods, the documented microphone workflows do not establish that capability. Listening through AirPods is not the same as recording the song’s playback audio.
Record video with AirPods as the microphone
Apple says supported camera apps can use AirPods as a microphone, “like a lapel mic.” This is a camera feature, not a general guarantee that every audio recorder can use every AirPods model. Apple lists AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 for this feature. It requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later and is unavailable in some countries and regions, including the EU. Apple’s AirPods camera-app instructions cover the supported setup.

Choose AirPods as the camera input
- Connect your AirPods to the iPhone or iPad.
- Open a supported camera app and switch to Video mode.
- Open Camera Controls > Input and select AirPods. Where available, Apple also describes selecting an input through Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Input.
- Choose an available mic mode: Automatic, Standard, Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum.
Some supported configurations also let you start or stop video by pressing the AirPods stem or Digital Crown after configuring the camera remote in AirPods settings. The controls available can vary by device and setup.

Record a voice memo or musical idea
Apple documents Voice Memos recording with the iPhone’s built-in microphone, a supported headset or an external microphone. That guidance does not promise AirPods routing in every Voice Memos setup. Open the app and check which input source is actually available on your device. Apple’s Voice Memos guide also describes mono, stereo and Spatial Audio options on supported models; its stereo mode can use multiple iPhone microphones, which should not be mistaken for stereo capture by AirPods.
GarageBand for iPhone’s Audio Recorder can capture a voice, instrument or other sound using the iPhone microphone, and Apple documents connecting an external microphone. The guide does not guarantee that AirPods will appear as an input in every GarageBand setup, so check the app’s available input on your device. When to choose another recording input
For a quick voice or video capture, try AirPods when your app exposes them as an input. For a more controlled vocal or instrument recording, Apple documents using an external microphone or audio interface as an input in relevant recording workflows. Confirm that the microphone or interface is compatible with your iPhone or iPad. The cited Apple guidance does not provide comparative sound measurements, so it cannot establish that AirPods or any particular external mic will sound better.

Why AirPods recording support can vary
Bluetooth recording capability is conditional. Apple’s developer documentation says an app can opt in to a high-quality Bluetooth recording option when the Bluetooth route supports it; unsupported routes may use a fallback.
