Yes—renters can insure belongings in the home they rent through Coles Contents Insurance. It is contents cover, not a building policy for the tenant. Coles lists cover for events such as fire, theft, vandalism and escape of liquid, plus new-for-old replacement, but benefits depend on the applicable policy terms, exclusions, limits and excesses. Away-from-home cover and higher limits for valuable items may require optional cover or specification.

Is Coles Contents Insurance renters insurance?

Coles Insurance answers the question “Do you have Renters Insurance?” by saying: “If you are renting, you can cover your contents in the home that you rent with Coles Contents Insurance.” Read Coles’ renters insurance FAQ.

That means the product is intended to insure a renter’s belongings at the insured home; it is not a building policy for a tenant. Whether a particular loss is covered depends on the policy documents applying to the quote or renewal and the renter’s certificate.

What the policy advertises for contents at home

What renters should check before buying

Set a realistic contents sum insured

The sum insured is the maximum the insurer will pay toward replacing contents. Coles recommends estimating replacement value with its contents calculator. Estimate what it would cost to replace belongings now, rather than relying on what you paid for them years ago. Underestimating can leave a shortfall after a major loss.

Check limits for valuable belongings

Some item categories have limits. Coles says eligible contents can be specified for a higher amount at the insured address for an additional premium; specified contents appear on the certificate, and their value must be included in the total contents sum insured. Coles also says it does not automatically increase sums insured for listed or specified contents or personal effects. Review the item limits and listed values in your quote and certificate.

Decide whether belongings need cover away from home

Contents cover at the insured address is different from cover for portable belongings taken elsewhere. Coles offers optional Unspecified Personal Effects cover for a range of portable items and Specified Personal Effects cover for eligible individual items, subject to limits and additional premium. Its FAQ says cover may extend across Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere in the world for up to 90 days, depending on the option and subject to terms, limits and excesses. Verify the territory, duration and applicable limits in the policy documents for the specific item.

Understand excesses and exclusions

The excess is the amount the policyholder pays toward a claim. Coles notes that choosing a higher excess can reduce the premium, but increases the amount paid when claiming. Check the standard excess and any separate excess shown for particular situations, including cover outside the home. Read exclusions and sub-limits alongside the insured-event list; a listed event does not establish that every resulting loss is covered.

Which policy documents apply?

Coles’ policy-document index identifies Auto & General Insurance Company Limited as issuer of the Coles Home Insurance PDS. The index says that PDS applies to policies with a start date on or after 1 September 2024. It also lists a June 2026 Supplementary PDS, applying to new policies quoted on or after 25 June 2026 and policies renewed on or after 2 August 2026. Select the documents applicable to your quote or renewal and read them with your certificate and any supplementary terms. Coles says, “A PDS outlines the terms and conditions of your policy.” Check Coles’ policy-document index.

The roles are distinct: Auto & General Insurance Company Limited is identified as the insurer, while Auto & General Services and Coles are involved in arranging or distributing the product; Flybuys is also identified as an authorised representative in the product disclosures. The policy documents explain the parties and their roles.

How to judge the price and compare alternatives

No representative renter premium or price comparison is established here. Coles advertises 15% off the first year’s premium for a new Contents policy purchased online, subject to its offer terms and eligibility start date. That promotion alone does not show whether the policy is cheaper than another insurer; your premium depends on your quote.

For a meaningful comparison, obtain more than one quote using the same address, contents value, excess, insured events and optional extras. Moneysmart recommends comparing quotes and checking policy details, including the relevant PDS. See Moneysmart’s home insurance guidance.

  • Compare the annual premium after discounts and any disclosed difference for paying by instalments.
  • Compare standard and other applicable excesses.
  • Check insured events, exclusions, accidental damage and flood options.
  • Compare the sum insured and item-category limits, including whether valuable items need to be specified.
  • For belongings taken away from home, check personal-effects options, excess, territory, duration and limits.
  • Read the precise new-for-old settlement terms and exceptions.
  • Check whether storage or moving-related cover suits your circumstances.

Practical record-keeping for a renter

A simple inventory notebook or logbook can help you record belongings and estimate their replacement value. It is optional organisation support, not a coverage requirement or guarantee of a claim outcome; the policy documents and evidence requirements still govern a claim.
