Yes. You can make money online by attracting prospective customers, collecting their inquiries and delivering them to businesses. But lead generation is a business model, not a reliable income shortcut: earnings depend on buyer demand, the cost of finding prospects, lead quality and the terms you agree with a buyer. The official sources cited here establish no typical income, profit margin or guaranteed result.
How online lead generation works
A lead is a person who has expressed interest in a product or service. A lead-generation business brings that person to a form or other contact point, collects an inquiry and routes it to a business that may follow up. You might run the process for a client, or build a comparison-shopping experience; those are distinct models, though a business can combine activities. The CFPB discusses this distinction in its 2024 Circular 2024-01.
What determines whether it makes money
Revenue is not the same as profit. A business may pay for inquiries, but acquiring traffic, collecting and validating submissions, and managing delivery all take resources. Before investing heavily, establish that businesses in the chosen market want the inquiries and that your acquisition costs and operating effort can be supported by the buyer arrangement. No source cited here establishes a standard lead price or representative earnings figure.
- Buyer demand: Identify businesses with a reason to pay for prospective customers and speak with potential buyers before building around an assumed market.
- Acquisition channel: Paid search can reach people actively looking for a service, while content and other traffic sources have different costs, intent and time to learn. Google’s Lead Generation guide describes paid-search campaign setup, but it is an older guide and does not show that a campaign will be profitable today.
- Lead quality: Agree what counts as a valid inquiry and how to handle duplicates, invalid details and disputes. Google says that lead quality is a shared responsibility when businesses capture submissions on their sites or in a CRM.
- Buyer relationship: Clarify how inquiries will be delivered and used, and what the buyer expects. These are practical operating questions, not a universal industry contract or pricing standard.
Choose a capture method you can use
Your own website form
A site form gives you control over the questions and the path from visitor to inquiry. Ask only for information needed to handle the request, explain how it will be used, and protect the information you collect. Google’s guidance notes that invalid-traffic filtering does not catch every fake or low-quality submission; it recommends safeguards such as reCAPTCHA and double opt-in. These measures can help, but do not guarantee that every lead is valid.

Google Ads lead-form assets
Google’s lead-form assets have specific eligibility rules; they are not a blanket approval for every lead-generation business. Google requires a privacy-policy link and says that only first-party advertisers or third-party agencies with a well-established direct relationship to the offered products or services may use these assets. Its policy says affiliate networks or lead-generation businesses may be disallowed at Google’s discretion. Read the current Lead form requirements before relying on this format. This restriction concerns Google’s lead-form assets, not all online lead generation or all advertising.

Commercial email in the United States
If you use email to market, the FTC says the CAN-SPAM Act applies to commercial messages, not only bulk campaigns, and does not exempt business-to-business email. Requirements include accurate sender and routing information, non-deceptive subject lines, identifying the message as an ad, a valid postal address, an opt-out method and honoring opt-out requests. Hiring another company to send marketing email does not let a business contract away its responsibility. See the FTC’s CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide. These points concern U.S. law; check rules in every jurisdiction where you operate or market.

Advertising claims
Do not promise earnings, conversion rates or lead results you cannot substantiate. FTC guidance says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based. Its Advertising and Marketing Basics guidance applies broadly; fabricated client results, earnings screenshots or claims that a method is effortless can mislead prospective customers.

Consumer financial products
Lead generation involving lending or other consumer financial products needs particular care. The CFPB’s 2024 Circular 2024-01 addresses whether digital intermediaries can violate the Consumer Financial Protection Act by preferring or steering consumers toward products based on benefits to the operator. A disclosure alone should not be treated as resolving every steering concern; the facts and applicable law matter.

A practical way to start
- Pick a market and validate buyer interest. Find businesses that serve the customers you hope to reach, then ask what makes an inquiry useful to them.
- Choose a traffic source. Compare likely customer intent, acquisition cost, platform rules and how long it may take to learn whether the channel works.
- Build a clear inquiry path. Explain what the form is for, collect only necessary information and state how the inquiry will be used.
- Set quality and delivery expectations with the buyer. Define a valid lead, delivery timing and how duplicates or disputed submissions will be handled.
- Measure costs and outcomes before scaling. Track acquisition and operating costs alongside the buyer’s assessment of lead quality. Do not assume that more submissions mean a profitable business.
