For most first-time viewers, watch Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Marshals, then Dutton Ranch. That is the release-order path in Paramount+’s May 16, 2026 viewing guide. If you would rather follow the Dutton family’s story from its historical beginnings, watch 1883, 1923, Yellowstone, Marshals, then Dutton Ranch. The guide explicitly presents both approaches.

Choose between them by deciding whether you value the order the shows arrived or the family timeline. After Yellowstone, the newer branches also offer different kinds of stories: Kayce’s law-enforcement procedural in Marshals, or Beth and Rip’s next chapter in Dutton Ranch.

Which Yellowstone series should you watch first?

Start with Yellowstone if you want the franchise in release order. It is the modern-day flagship, and it is the first title in the sequence listed by Paramount+’s official viewing guide: Yellowstone → 1883 → 1923 → Marshals → Dutton Ranch. The guide dates the first three releases to 2018, 2021, and 2022, respectively, and lists Marshals and Dutton Ranch as 2026 releases.

Start with 1883 instead if you want the family chronology: 1883 → 1923 → Yellowstone → Marshals → Dutton Ranch. The first three move from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century and then to the modern day. The two newer shows continue in the present-day branch after Yellowstone.

There is no need to invent a season-by-season interleaving for this sequence. The official guide gives show-level orders, not instructions to pause one series midway through and switch to another.

A useful way to make the choice is to ask what you want from the first episode. Want the modern ranch and family conflict that anchors the franchise? Begin with Yellowstone. Want to see the family’s earlier journey before meeting its modern generation? Begin with 1883. Prefer to sample a contained historical story before committing to the broader lineup? The guide identifies 1883 as a limited-run series with 10 episodes. If you are returning specifically for a character, the choice is narrower: Kayce leads you toward Marshals, while Beth and Rip lead you toward Dutton Ranch.

How the five series differ

The word “spin-offs” is convenient shorthand, but it does not describe every show’s relationship in the same way. Paramount+ frames 1883 and 1923 as origin stories, Yellowstone as the modern flagship, and Marshals and Dutton Ranch as present-day continuations. The Associated Press describes Marshals more specifically as a spin-off that takes Kayce into a Western law-enforcement procedural.

Series Place in the story Best fit US viewing note in Paramount+’s May 16, 2026 guide
1883 James and Margaret lead their family west toward Montana in the late nineteenth century. Paramount+ describes it as a limited-run series with 10 episodes. A bounded commitment focused on the family’s origin and a journey west. Paramount+
1923 A later generation, including Jacob and Cara, in the early twentieth century. The guide says the drama spans two seasons. A historical chapter centered on another generation and a broader period setting. Paramount+
Yellowstone The modern-day story centered on John Dutton and the Montana ranch. Contemporary family and ranch conflict; also the release-order starting point. Peacock for streaming, not Paramount+; Paramount Network episodes may air when scheduled.
Marshals Kayce leaves ranch life and joins an elite US Marshals unit in Montana. Viewers who want Kayce in an action-oriented law-enforcement procedural. Paramount+; new episodes also air on CBS.
Dutton Ranch Beth and Rip head to South Texas to start a new life. Viewers who want to follow Beth and Rip beyond Yellowstone. Paramount+

The key difference is not just when each story takes place; it is what kind of viewing experience each offers. 1883 is a journey-centered origin, 1923 moves to a later generation and an early-twentieth-century setting, and Yellowstone focuses on present-day ranch life. The two newer branches then split by character and format: Marshals follows Kayce into law enforcement, while Dutton Ranch continues with Beth and Rip in South Texas.

These are US destinations as stated in the official guide, not a guarantee of what a service carries in every country or on every later date. Check the current catalog and local listings before subscribing or planning a watch.

Release order or chronological order?

Choose release order for the franchise’s original viewing sequence

Release order begins with the modern-day story and then steps back into earlier family history before moving forward again into the present-day continuations. It is the clearest default for a newcomer who wants to follow the sequence in which the guide presents the franchise’s expansion. It also puts the flagship first, before asking you to choose between historical chapters and newer character branches.

This route does not mean the historical series are side material. They are substantial parts of the Dutton story, but they take place in earlier eras. Release order simply lets you encounter the modern flagship before its historical context and later branches.

Use this route if you would rather meet the modern Dutton family first and then look back at the earlier chapters. It also gives you a straightforward series-level plan without requiring a season-by-season switch. Paramount+’s guide lists the shows in this order and gives release years for the first three: Yellowstone in 2018, 1883 in 2021, and 1923 in 2022. It lists the two present-day continuations as 2026 releases.

Choose chronology to begin with the family’s earlier generations

Chronological order puts the historical origin story first, follows with the early-twentieth-century generation, and only then reaches John Dutton’s modern-day story. It suits viewers who prefer to move forward through the family timeline instead of beginning in the present and looking back.

Both routes converge on Marshals and Dutton Ranch after Yellowstone. The guide does not claim that one sequence is required for comprehension; it offers release and chronological approaches so viewers can choose according to preference.

Chronology is especially simple for the first three titles: 1883 covers the late nineteenth-century family journey, 1923 follows a later generation in the early twentieth century, and Yellowstone brings the story to the modern day. From there, pick a continuation by character interest. The available guide places both newer series after the flagship, but does not provide a more granular sequence of episodes or seasons.

Which show fits the kind of story you want?

For a short, defined entry: 1883

If a multi-season flagship feels like too large a starting commitment, 1883 is the most bounded option identified in the guide: it calls the show limited-run and specifies 10 episodes. Its focus is the family’s westward journey, so it is the natural choice for a viewer drawn to the origin story rather than the modern ranch conflict. The episode count is the guide’s stated figure; it should not be read as a runtime estimate or a guarantee about how quickly you will finish.

Starting here is also the cleanest way to follow the historical chronology. You will then move to 1923, not straight into the modern-day ranch, if you want to keep progressing through the generations. If you only want a contained entry, you can choose it for its limited-run format without treating that choice as a commitment to watch every title in the lineup.

For a later historical chapter: 1923

1923 follows a later generation, including Jacob and Cara, in the early twentieth century. Choose it after 1883 if chronology is your priority, or after Yellowstone if you are following release order. Paramount+’s guide describes it as spanning two seasons; it does not give an episode total there, so an episode count is not needed to compare its commitment with 1883.

It is the middle step between the origin journey and the modern family drama, rather than another present-day continuation. That makes it the natural next pick for a viewer whose main interest is seeing a different generation and period setting. The guide does not supply a season-by-season crossover plan, so there is no need to interrupt another series to fit it in.

For contemporary ranch and family conflict: Yellowstone

Yellowstone is the present-day center of the lineup, with John Dutton and the Montana ranch at its core. It is the right opening when you want the modern flagship or the release-order path. For chronological viewing, it is the point where the saga moves from the historical generations into the modern family.

It is also the title to choose if what you mean by “Yellowstone” is specifically the contemporary ranch story, rather than the family’s historical beginnings or the later character branches. For US viewers, note the unusual service split: Paramount+’s guide says the series streams on Peacock, not Paramount+, while episodes may be on Paramount Network when scheduled.

For Kayce in a procedural: Marshals

Marshals shifts Kayce away from ranch life and into an elite US Marshals unit in Montana. AP characterizes it as a Western law-enforcement procedural. That makes it a distinct branch for viewers whose main interest is Kayce and a case-oriented format rather than another origin story.

In Mark Kennedy’s Associated Press report, Luke Grimes, who portrays Kayce, said: “We wanted to make it feel organic and we wanted there to be enough of the sort of ethos of ‘Yellowstone’ in there that the original fans could have something to hold on to getting into the show, but then have it have somewhere to go that felt like its own thing.” That is Grimes’s description of the creative aim, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the tone identical to Yellowstone.

AP also quoted showrunner Spencer Hudnut: “CBS really wanted this to be a non-traditional procedural, which really allowed us to lean heavily into character.” The comments explain the stated intent behind the format; they are not a substitute for deciding whether a procedural is the kind of story you want.

In practical terms, pick Marshals when Kayce is the character you want to follow and the law-enforcement setup appeals to you. The AP description makes the format distinction clear: it is a Western procedural, not another historical origin chapter. In the US, the official guide lists Paramount+ and also notes that new episodes air on CBS.

For Beth and Rip beyond Yellowstone: Dutton Ranch

Dutton Ranch follows Beth and Rip as they head to South Texas to start a new life. It is the direct character-interest choice if those two are the reason you want to continue after Yellowstone. The guide places it in the present-day continuation, rather than among the historical origin stories.

Its decision point is character rather than timeline: if you want the next chapter for Beth and Rip, choose this branch; if you want Kayce’s move into law enforcement, choose Marshals. The official guide lists both after the flagship in its show-level watch path, and the US viewing note for Dutton Ranch is Paramount+.

Where can you watch the shows?

Paramount+’s May 16, 2026 guide gives the following US viewing notes. Streaming rights and catalogs can change, so use these as a dated guide rather than a permanent availability promise.

  • 1883 and 1923: Paramount+.
  • Yellowstone: Peacock for streaming, not Paramount+. Episodes may also be on Paramount Network when scheduled.
  • Marshals: Paramount+; new episodes also air on CBS.
  • Dutton Ranch: Paramount+.

Outside the United States, availability may differ by territory. Check your local service catalogs and broadcast listings for the specific series and season you want; a service carrying one title does not establish that it carries the others.

If you are planning a watch across multiple services, do not assume that all five titles sit in one catalog: the guide’s US notes place four on Paramount+ and Yellowstone on Peacock for streaming. Check which season or episodes are currently listed, too. The CBS note for Marshals refers to new episodes airing on the network; it is distinct from the Paramount+ streaming listing.

What about other Yellowstone-related titles?

The five-show watch path in Paramount+’s May 16, 2026 guide consists of 1883, 1923, Yellowstone, Marshals, and Dutton Ranch. It does not include 6666, 1944, or The Madison. AP described those three as potential future spin-offs at the time of its report, but that older description is not current confirmation of their status or how they relate to the Dutton family. The cited guide also does not place The Madison in the family timeline. Treat the five-show sequence above as the guide’s watch path rather than assuming every Yellowstone-related or prospective title belongs in it.

That distinction matters if you are looking for a definitive franchise-wide list. The recommended order here is the five-title sequence in Paramount+’s guide, not a claim that no other related projects exist or could be added. For a viewing plan, stick to the titles and relationships the guide actually places: historical origins, the modern flagship, and two present-day continuations.
