Play Yakuza: Like a Dragon first, then Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The 2020 game introduces Ichiban Kasuga, his friends, and the series’ turn-based role-playing format. Infinite Wealth continues Ichiban’s story, adds Kazuma Kiryu as a second protagonist, and moves much of the adventure to Hawaii. You can start with Infinite Wealth if Hawaii, Kiryu’s return, or the larger activity list matters more than following Ichiban’s development in order, but the first game gives the sequel’s character relationships and emotional stakes far more context.
The short answer: start with Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the better starting point because it establishes Ichiban Kasuga as the new central hero and explains the personal history behind his allies, enemies, and beliefs. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth brings Ichiban back and places him alongside Kazuma Kiryu, a major earlier-series character, so its story assumes that the player will benefit from knowing Ichiban’s journey.
This is a continuity recommendation, not a claim that Infinite Wealth is impossible to understand on its own. Its opening supplies enough context for a newcomer to follow the immediate plot. The difference is emotional payoff: events, friendships, and character decisions in the first game carry forward, while the sequel also spends substantial time on Kiryu’s history.

What each game is trying to do
Yakuza: Like a Dragon introduces Ichiban’s world
Yakuza: Like a Dragon centers on Ichiban Kasuga, a former yakuza member whose life changes after a betrayal and a long absence from society. The game uses his return to Yokohama to introduce a new cast, new conflicts, and a new mechanical identity for the series. You learn why Ichiban treats life like a heroic role-playing quest, how his companions join him, and why the group remains loyal despite wildly different backgrounds.
That introductory work occupies much of the game. The story gradually expands from a personal mystery into a conflict involving organized crime, political power, and the fate of an entire district. Side stories and optional diversions reinforce Ichiban’s personality, so the protagonist is not merely a replacement for an older hero; he is written as an intentionally different kind of lead.
Infinite Wealth expands the cast and the map
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is built around two protagonists: Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu. Their paths converge across an adventure that crosses the Pacific and includes Hawaii as a major setting, while familiar Tokyo locations also return. The result is broader in geography and scope than the first Ichiban game.
Ichiban’s chapters continue the personal and ensemble-story thread established in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Kiryu’s chapters look backward as well as forward, drawing on his long history in the series. Players who know Kiryu’s previous appearances will recognize more references and understand why his circumstances carry unusual weight. New players can follow the immediate events, but they will encounter a veteran protagonist whose significance is deliberately rooted in earlier games.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Ichiban’s motivation: his optimism, setbacks, and idea of friendship are developed over the entire first game rather than explained in a short recap.
- The party’s relationships: returning allies have established histories, personal goals, and distinct bonds with Ichiban.
- The series’ transition: you see how the franchise moves from Kazuma Kiryu’s long-running arc to Ichiban’s new role before both characters share the spotlight.
The sequel’s emotional scenes are therefore more meaningful when you already know what Ichiban has risked and what his friends have endured. The first game also lets you learn the battle system before Infinite Wealth adds more movement options, environmental interactions, and systems.
When starting with Infinite Wealth is reasonable
Starting with Infinite Wealth makes sense if you primarily want the newest game’s Hawaii setting, its two-protagonist premise, or its larger collection of activities. It is also a practical choice if you have limited time and are more interested in Kiryu’s return than in Ichiban’s origin story.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExpect references to prior events and characters to land with less force. You may understand what is happening in a scene while missing why a particular reunion, sacrifice, or callback matters. If you later play Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the sequel will also reveal some of the direction in which Ichiban’s life develops.

Combat: familiar turn-based battles with more tactical space
How Like a Dragon establishes the system
Yakuza: Like a Dragon presents combat as a “live-command RPG battle.” You choose commands for Ichiban and his party while the fight unfolds in the game world rather than on a separate static battle screen. Characters, enemies, and nearby objects remain part of the encounter, giving attacks a sense of place even though the underlying structure is turn-based.
The first game is a useful tutorial for understanding jobs, party composition, skills, status effects, equipment, and timing. Ichiban’s party members have different strengths and personalities, and changing jobs alters their available abilities. Because the story introduces these systems gradually, it is easier to learn the game’s logic before moving to the sequel.

What Infinite Wealth changes
PlayStation describes Infinite Wealth as bringing back the earlier game’s turn-based battles while adding freedom of movement and environmental tactics. Positioning can affect which targets are hit, whether an attack connects with several enemies, and how nearby objects become part of an action. The result remains recognizably turn-based, but the player has more control over where a character stands before issuing a command.

That added flexibility gives experienced players more room to plan combinations and exploit the environment. It also means the sequel can feel busier at first, particularly if you are learning both the basic command system and the new movement possibilities simultaneously. Playing the first game beforehand makes the changes feel like an expansion instead of a completely new ruleset.
Characters and emotional stakes
Ichiban Kasuga
Ichiban is an enthusiastic, unconventional hero who interprets difficult situations through the language of role-playing games. His optimism is not simply comic relief; it determines how he treats friends, rivals, and strangers. The first game shows how that outlook survives betrayal, poverty, and public humiliation.
In Infinite Wealth, Ichiban is not being introduced from scratch. His previous choices shape how other characters respond to him, and the sequel can move more quickly into new conflicts because the foundation is already in place. If you want his complete arc, the first game is essential context.
Kazuma Kiryu
Kiryu is the second lead in Infinite Wealth. His presence connects the newer Ichiban era with the older Yakuza storyline. The game frames him as a man facing a final battle in the twilight of his life, a description SEGA uses in its release material.

You do not need to complete every previous Kiryu-focused game to understand the sequel’s immediate objectives. However, his scenes are written for players who recognize his past, relationships, and reputation. If Kiryu is your main reason for buying Infinite Wealth, consider playing at least one earlier Kiryu-led title before it; if your priority is Ichiban, begin with Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Settings and activities
Why Hawaii changes the feel of Infinite Wealth
Hawaii gives Infinite Wealth a different visual and structural identity from the first Ichiban game. The Pacific setting is not a brief sightseeing stop: it supports major story sections, new characters, and activities that take advantage of the larger environment. Tokyo locations remain part of the adventure, so the sequel balances a new destination with familiar series spaces.
The broader map also supports more exploration between major battles. You can spend time following the main plot, completing optional stories, or simply moving through the city and discovering diversions. This makes the sequel a stronger fit for players who want a large, activity-filled RPG rather than a tightly focused introduction.
Activities officially highlighted for Infinite Wealth
- Karaoke: a returning series pastime built around performance scenes and songs.
- Darts: a precision mini-game available as a break from the main story.
- Golf: an additional recreational activity outside combat.
- Batting-cage baseball: a timing-focused diversion familiar to the series.
- Mahjong: a deeper tabletop activity for players who enjoy learning its rules.
- Dondoko Island: a substantial management and building activity with its own progression loop.
- Crazy Delivery: an arcade-style activity centered on energetic movement and delivery challenges.
These diversions are optional, but they affect how each game feels. Players who mainly want story can treat them as breaks. Players who enjoy completion goals, mini-games, and side content may spend dozens of hours away from the critical path without needing additional downloadable content.

SEGA’s official Asia information notes that the physical edition is for PlayStation 4. That does not mean the game is unavailable digitally on other systems; it means buyers should distinguish between a physical-disc listing and a digital version. A retailer may use a cross-generation title in its description while stocking only one disc format.
| What you are deciding | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Console generation | Whether you need the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S edition |
| PC purchase | Whether you prefer the Windows storefront or Steam and whether your computer meets the current listing’s requirements |
| Physical copy | Disc platform, regional compatibility, included codes, and whether the seller is offering a PS4 edition |
| Digital copy | Store territory, language options, edition name, and download size shown on your platform |
Game Pass and subscription access
The Xbox US listing currently states that cloud play is included with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. It also states that streaming with Essential requires purchasing the game. These terms apply to that US listing and may change as Microsoft adjusts plans, catalogs, or regional availability.
Do not assume that a subscription shown in one country will provide the same access in another. Open the Xbox store while signed into the account and region you will use, then check whether the game is included for download, available only through cloud play, or requires a separate purchase. Subscription inclusion can also differ between console installation and browser or mobile streaming.

Choose by the experience you want
Choose Yakuza: Like a Dragon first if…
- You want Ichiban’s story in chronological order.
- You prefer a focused introduction to the new protagonist and his party.
- You are learning the series’ turn-based battle system for the first time.
- You want later events involving Ichiban to carry their full emotional context.
- You plan to play both games and do not need the newest setting immediately.
Start with Infinite Wealth if…
- Hawaii is the main reason you are interested in the series.
- You specifically want a two-protagonist adventure featuring Ichiban and Kiryu.
- You value a larger activity list and more freedom of movement during battles.
- You are comfortable accepting references to earlier events without experiencing them first.
- You have access to Infinite Wealth through a current subscription or platform deal and want to begin with the available game.
Consider earlier Kiryu games before Infinite Wealth if…
- Kiryu is the character who interests you most.
- You want his return and later-life storyline to carry maximum impact.
- You enjoy long-running character arcs more than starting with the newest mechanics.
A practical decision process
- Identify your priority. If your priority is Ichiban’s complete arc, select Yakuza: Like a Dragon. If it is Hawaii or the Ichiban–Kiryu pairing, select Infinite Wealth.
- Check your platform. Confirm the exact console or PC storefront, edition, and regional listing. SEGA lists Infinite Wealth across PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, and Steam, but physical formats can be narrower.
- Check subscription status. On Xbox in the United States, verify whether your plan includes cloud play or whether a purchase is required. Recheck the store for your own region.
- Decide whether spoilers matter. Starting with the sequel exposes you to the direction of Ichiban’s life and introduces Kiryu in a late-stage context. Starting with the first game preserves the intended progression.
- Set your time expectations. Both are substantial role-playing games with optional stories and diversions. Infinite Wealth adds an especially broad set of activities, including Dondoko Island and Crazy Delivery.
Downloadable content and New Game Plus
SEGA’s release information for Infinite Wealth mentions downloadable content, including the Master Vacation Bundle and New Game Plus. These additions are secondary to the main purchase decision. You do not need them to understand the core story or to follow the recommended play order.
Check the edition description in your regional store to see whether a bundle includes those items. A standard edition, deluxe package, and post-launch add-on can have different contents even when the base game title is identical. Do not assume that a used physical copy includes one-time digital bonuses.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Skipping the first game because the sequel has a recap: a recap can explain events, but it cannot reproduce the gradual relationships and character growth of the original.
- Assuming Kiryu’s presence makes Ichiban optional: the sequel gives both heroes major roles; choosing it only for Kiryu can leave you unprepared for Ichiban’s continued story.
- Buying the wrong physical edition: verify the disc platform, especially where an official regional listing identifies a PS4 physical edition.
- Reading US subscription terms as global policy: the Xbox cloud-play statement is tied to the US listing and can differ by region or plan.
- Expecting every activity to be mandatory: karaoke, golf, Mahjong, Dondoko Island, and other diversions are there for players who want them; you can follow the main plot without completing every one.
Final recommendation by player type
| Player type | Best first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New to the modern Like a Dragon era | Yakuza: Like a Dragon | Introduces Ichiban, his party, and the live-command RPG battle structure |
| Ichiban-focused player | Yakuza: Like a Dragon | Provides the complete beginning of his current storyline |
| Kiryu-focused player | Earlier Kiryu-led games, then Infinite Wealth | Gives his later storyline more context |
| Open-world activity fan | Infinite Wealth | Offers Hawaii, Tokyo, and a larger selection of optional activities |
| Player with only one game available through a current Xbox offer | Whichever listing is included in your region | Access and cloud terms vary by plan and territory |
SEGA markets Infinite Wealth with “riveting story, captivating characters, fun mini-games, and strategic battles.” Those are publisher claims rather than independent measurements, but they accurately describe the sequel’s emphasis on a broad, activity-rich RPG structure. For most players, the strongest route is still Yakuza: Like a Dragon followed by Infinite Wealth: you learn the new era from its beginning, then experience the Hawaii adventure and Kiryu’s return with the intended context.
