“Yahoo Boys” is a label for a changing online-fraud subculture associated especially with Nigeria—not the established name of one centralized organization, and not a description of Nigerians generally. INTERPOL traces the label to the use of Yahoo apps for communication and says the group came to prominence in the early 2000s.

Who are the Yahoo Boys?

The term refers to people associated with online fraud, particularly in Nigeria, and to a criminal subculture that has changed over time. INTERPOL’s account places the label’s prominence in the early 2000s. The available accounts describe different people, schemes and alleged networks; they do not establish “Yahoo Boys” as the formal name of a single organization with one membership or command structure. INTERPOL’s 2017 report announcement explains the label’s origin and regional context.

The term should not be used to imply that Nigerians generally are involved in fraud. It describes criminal activity attributed to particular people or groups, not a nationality or population.

Why are they called Yahoo Boys?

INTERPOL says the name came from reliance on Yahoo apps to communicate. That origin points to a particular period in online communication; it does not mean that Yahoo is responsible for the crimes or that the label identifies a present-day platform-based organization.

What scams were associated with the early label?

INTERPOL’s account of the early playbook names several forms of fraud that relied heavily on persuading a target to trust a story or send money:

  • Advance-fee fraud: a victim is told that paying money upfront will unlock a larger payment, benefit or opportunity.
  • Stranded-traveller fraud: someone poses as a traveller in urgent difficulty and asks for financial help.
  • Romance fraud: a person builds a deceptive romantic relationship online and uses that trust to solicit money.

These are broad descriptions to help readers recognize the nature of the schemes, not scripts for reproducing them. INTERPOL characterized the early activity as less technically advanced than some later fraud cases. That does not mean every person or network followed the same path or that the early schemes disappeared. The 2017 INTERPOL–Trend Micro report provides the regional account.

How did the fraud landscape change?

Later enforcement and threat assessments describe fraud involving more than direct requests for money. In a 2016 case account, INTERPOL said an alleged international network used payment diversion: after an email account was compromised, a buyer could receive false instructions about where to send a payment. The account also named CEO fraud, business email compromise and romance scams. INTERPOL’s account of the 2016 operation describes the allegations; it does not establish that all these methods belong to one group called “Yahoo Boys.”

INTERPOL’s 2024 financial-fraud assessment places certain West African criminal groups in a wider transnational environment that includes investment, advance-fee, romance and cryptocurrency fraud. It says technology is enabling groups to target victims globally. These are examples associated with certain groups in a regional assessment, not proof that every group—or people using the Yahoo Boys label—engages in each type of fraud. What can a high-profile case tell us?

In 2016, INTERPOL reported that a joint operation with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) led to the arrest of a suspected ringleader. The agency linked the suspect to thousands of online scams and alleged fraud worth more than USD 60 million. Those figures describe the alleged network in that particular case—not the typical amount stolen in a scam, the scale of the wider subculture, or a measure of its prevalence.

A separate INTERPOL report summary said that an average of 30% of cybercrimes reported to law enforcement in the West African region studied resulted in arrests. This is a historical, regional figure about reported cybercrime during the period covered by the report. It is neither a current arrest rate nor a statistic specifically about Yahoo Boys. The 2017 announcement summarizes that report.

What do the available accounts not establish?

These sources document the label’s early prominence, examples of fraud, and particular law-enforcement cases. They do not provide a contemporary, representative estimate of how many people are involved in activity described as Yahoo Boys, or how common that activity is. Nor does an example of a scam establish that everyone associated with the label uses it.

An academic article’s description reports interviews with 40 EFCC officers in Abuja and Lagos. That sample can offer an institutional perspective on cybercriminal activity; it is not a representative count of offenders or victims, or a measure of public attitudes. The article record identifies the study.

In a 2017 announcement about the regional report, INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation Executive Director Noboru Nakatani said: “This joint paper shows that criminals across the region are becoming more technically savvy, and this emerging underground market will require an even stronger law enforcement response in the future, both in terms of training for investigators and ensuring the appropriate legislation is in place.” This was a statement about that report’s findings and recommendations, not a present-day assessment.
