XWorm is a Windows remote-access trojan (RAT) family. When an operator gets it onto a computer, the malware can provide remote control, steal credentials and other data, monitor activity, and deliver additional payloads. XWorm is not one fixed executable: delivery chains, persistence, capabilities, and indicators vary by version and campaign. Treat any suspected infection as a security incident, not merely an unwanted application.
What XWorm is and why it matters
Microsoft describes Trojan:MSIL/XWormRAT.A as an actively developed RAT that can give an attacker extensive control of an infected Windows device. The family was first identified for sale as malware-as-a-service in mid-2022 and later appeared in cracked versions, according to Microsoft and Malwarebytes. That history explains why different criminal groups can deploy builds with different options; it does not provide a reliable measure of how common XWorm is or how many victims it has.
A RAT normally combines two functions: a client running on the victim’s device and an operator-controlled server or panel. The client checks in to command-and-control infrastructure, receives instructions, and sends back results. Depending on the build, an operator may be able to browse files, run commands, capture information, or install another program. XWorm can therefore be both a data-theft tool and an entry point for a larger intrusion.
Security products may label related samples differently, such as Trojan:MSIL/XWormRAT.A, Trojan:VBS/XWormRAT!rfn, or a generic backdoor detection. A detection name identifies what a product recognized, not necessarily the exact campaign or complete set of features. A clean-looking desktop also proves little: Malwarebytes notes that XWorm can operate silently.

How XWorm infections reach a Windows computer
There is no universal “XWorm infection.” The routes below are documented examples. They show the decisions an attacker may try to induce, not a checklist that every sample follows.
Phishing messages with disk images, shortcuts, scripts, or archives
Microsoft’s MSIL threat description lists phishing emails carrying ISO or VHD disk images, LNK shortcut files, JavaScript files, and password-protected archives. The message may use a business pretext, an invoice theme, or an instruction to open an attachment. Once the recipient mounts an image, opens a shortcut, extracts an archive, or runs a script, a loader can start the next stage.
Password protection can be used to evade automated email scanning, while a disk image can make a malicious shortcut appear alongside a document. The visible file may be a decoy; the shortcut can launch a script, a command interpreter, or another loader. Do not assume that an attachment is safe because the extension is unfamiliar or because an archive asks for a password supplied in the same email.

ClickFix-style social engineering
Microsoft also documents ClickFix lures. A malicious web page displays a fake error or verification message, copies a command to the clipboard, and tells the visitor to paste it into a Run dialog, terminal, or other Windows interface. The victim performs the most important execution step themselves.

A page that asks you to press a key combination, paste text into a command window, or run a “verification” command is not a normal browser repair procedure. Close the page and report it. If you already pasted and executed the command, disconnect the computer and follow the incident steps below rather than trying to infer what the command did.
Script-led delivery and staged persistence
In a separate Microsoft example, a malicious VBScript distributed as a Windows Script File downloads another stage, stages files, and establishes persistence. The documented chain creates a decoy scheduled task and a registry Run key. This is an example of one VBS variant, not proof that every XWorm sample uses VBScript, the same task name, or the same registry location.
Staging helps an attacker separate delivery from the final payload. A first script may fetch a second file, create a directory, alter settings, and then launch a loader. Each stage can have a different name or file type, making a single-file search ineffective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExcel add-in campaign exploiting an old vulnerability
FortiGuard Labs described a particular business-themed phishing campaign that delivered an Excel add-in. In that campaign, the attachment exploited CVE-2018-0802 in Microsoft Equation Editor, downloaded an HTA file, and loaded a .NET module that injected XWorm into a process. Researchers identified the observed payload as XWorm 7.2.

This chain is campaign-specific. XWorm does not require an Excel attachment, CVE-2018-0802, Equation Editor, an HTA file, or process injection in every deployment. The useful defensive lesson is to patch office software, treat unexpected add-ins as executable content, and investigate multi-stage behavior rather than searching only for the final RAT file.
What an operator may do after compromise
The following are capabilities associated with XWorm by Microsoft or Malwarebytes. Availability depends on the build, its configuration, and what the operator chooses to activate.
| Capability | Potential impact | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| Keylogging | Records keystrokes, potentially including passwords, messages, and payment details. | Credentials, authentication codes, confidential typing. |
| Clipboard monitoring or replacement | Reads copied text or replaces a copied address, command, or cryptocurrency destination. | Passwords, recovery codes, payment and wallet addresses. |
| Browser credential and Discord-token theft | Attempts to extract stored browser secrets or session tokens. | Saved logins, active sessions, and accounts using token-based access. |
| Screen capture | Shows the operator what is displayed, including documents and web sessions. | Business records, private conversations, and one-time codes. |
| Webcam control | May activate or access a camera without an obvious user workflow. | Privacy and physical surroundings. |
| Remote control and reconnaissance | Collects system information and can support further commands or tool delivery. | Network details, installed software, and administrator access. |
| Hidden Virtual Network Computing | Can provide a concealed interactive session on the desktop. | Applications and files reachable by the logged-in user. |
| DDoS or file encryption | Some associated builds include disruptive activity or encryption of files. | Availability and data recovery. |
| Additional malware delivery | The operator can use the foothold to install other malware, including ransomware. | Every account and system connected to the device. |
Credential theft makes account containment urgent. If an infected computer was used to sign in to email, banking, administration, cloud storage, or another sensitive service, assume those sessions and passwords may be exposed. Do not wait for a visible theft event before acting.

- Unexpected slowdown, high CPU, memory, disk, or network use.
- Microsoft Defender, firewall, User Account Control, or other security settings changed without an authorized reason.
- New or unfamiliar processes, files, directories, services, scheduled tasks, or registry Run entries.
- Auto-start entries that point into user-writable locations such as a profile or temporary directory.
- Unusual outbound connections from a workstation, especially immediately after opening an attachment or running a script.
- Webcam activity or an indicator light when no approved application should be using the camera.
- Unexpected command interpreters or script hosts, including
wscript.exe,cmd.exe,RegSvcs.exe, or a disguisedpythonw.exe. - Unknown files appearing after a user opens a document, archive, or web page.
- Clipboard contents changing unexpectedly, browser sessions being logged out, or accounts generating unfamiliar activity.
The VBS example documented by Microsoft includes unknown directories and files, unauthorized scheduled tasks and Run keys, tampered Defender or UAC settings, and unusual network behavior from script or loader processes. Its example addresses, names, and ports are campaign indicators that can become stale; they should not be treated as permanent XWorm-wide signatures.
Silence is also a clue to avoid misinterpreting. XWorm may run without pop-ups, obvious files, or a persistent performance problem. “The computer seems normal” is not evidence that it is clean after a suspicious execution event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you suspect XWorm
Move quickly, but avoid actions that destroy useful evidence before your security team can collect it.
- Isolate the device immediately. Microsoft’s instruction is: “Immediately disconnect the infected device from all networks, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.” Unplug the network cable, disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and do not reconnect simply to test whether the problem has gone away.
- Use a different, clean device for accounts. Change passwords for accounts used on the suspected computer. Prioritize email, password managers, financial services, administrator accounts, cloud consoles, and remote-access services. Enable multifactor authentication where available, revoke active sessions or tokens, and notify an administrator or provider about suspected theft.
- Record the event. Note when the attachment, script, or web page was opened; preserve the original email and file if policy permits; record visible alerts, usernames, filenames, and times. Do not forward a suspicious attachment to colleagues.
- Contact the responsible security team. On a managed device, follow your incident-response process. Investigators may need memory, disk, event-log, scheduled-task, registry, and network evidence before remediation.
- Scan with updated protection. From a trusted process, update antimalware definitions and run the scans recommended for the incident. Restore Defender, firewall, and other security settings only in accordance with your organization’s guidance.
- Review persistence and access. Check scheduled tasks, Run and RunOnce entries, startup folders, services, browser sessions, and newly created files. A removal tool finding one file does not establish that every stage, account exposure, or system modification is gone.
- Choose recovery based on risk. Malwarebytes recommends Windows reinstallation as the most secure home-remediation approach when other malware or system changes may have been introduced. Preserve personal documents and images, but do not blindly restore executable files or installers. If files were encrypted, Microsoft advises restoring from a clean offline backup only after disinfection.
For a business system, a clean rebuild may be faster and more trustworthy than trying to prove every persistence mechanism was removed. Preserve evidence first when legal, regulatory, or insurance requirements apply.

How administrators can reduce exposure
- Block or quarantine risky attachment types and password-protected archives at mail gateways, while providing a safe process for legitimate transfers.
- Train users to recognize phishing and ClickFix instructions. A request to paste a command or run a verification script should be treated as a high-risk action.
- Patch Windows, Office, and document-handling components. The FortiGuard campaign demonstrates why an old Equation Editor vulnerability can still matter when a vulnerable component is present.
- Use standard user accounts for routine work; reserve administrator rights for controlled tasks.
- Restrict script hosts and PowerShell where business requirements allow, and enable PowerShell logging so unusual execution can be investigated.
- Use application allow-listing or comparable controls to prevent unapproved scripts, add-ins, and binaries from running in user-writable directories.
- Alert on new scheduled tasks, registry auto-run entries, unexpected startup files, and security-setting changes.
- Protect critical accounts with multifactor authentication and monitor sign-ins, token use, and password-reset activity.
- Maintain tested, offline or otherwise isolated backups. A backup is useful only if it predates the compromise and can be restored safely.
How to compare an XWorm report with a live incident
When a vendor report or detection names XWorm, compare the report with your evidence along six axes rather than assuming the same chain occurred:
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Initial delivery and user action | Was the entry an email attachment, mounted image, script, ClickFix page, or something else? What did the user open or execute? |
| Loader and stages | Was there a downloader, HTA, .NET module, script, or process injection? Which files and processes actually ran? |
| Persistence | Were scheduled tasks, Run keys, services, startup folders, or another mechanism created? |
| Data targeted | Is there evidence of keylogging, browser credentials, tokens, clipboard access, screenshots, camera use, or file collection? |
| Defense evasion | Were Defender, firewall, UAC, logging, or security exclusions changed? |
| Command and control | Which outbound connections, domains, addresses, ports, and timing are supported by logs, and how current are those indicators? |
Keep the confidence level attached to each conclusion. A family capability is not proof that an operator used it, and a behavior seen in one sample is not a requirement for every XWorm infection.
Key takeaways
XWorm should be treated as a flexible Windows backdoor, not as a single signature or a single phishing trick. The documented routes range from malicious disk images and scripts to ClickFix commands and a campaign-specific Excel exploit. Once present, it may support surveillance, credential theft, remote control, disruption, and additional malware. Investigate suspicious execution even when the computer appears normal, isolate first, protect accounts from a clean device, and use a rebuild when the remaining uncertainty makes disinfection unreliable.
