The xTool M2 is an enclosed desktop craft machine that supports laser work and, with its optional CMYK inkjet module, color printing. Its capabilities depend on the module installed: the 10W or 20W blue diode module handles cutting and engraving, the 3W infrared module is aimed at engraving metals and certain plastics, and the inkjet module adds a separate printing workflow. The figures and material capabilities below are xTool’s published specifications and claims, not independent test results.
What the xTool M2 does—and which module does it
The M2 is not one fixed-output laser. xTool documents different modules for different processes, and the work area and material suitability vary by configuration.
- 10W or 20W blue diode laser: 445 nm laser for cutting and engraving materials such as wood, acrylic, leather, paper, corrugated cardboard, black aluminum oxide, thin metal, stone, and bamboo. The exact result depends on the material’s composition, thickness, and finish.
- 3W infrared laser: 1064 nm module intended for engraving metals including stainless steel, copper, aluminum, and precious metals, as well as certain plastics. xTool lists a smaller work area for this module.
- CMYK inkjet: an optional printing process, distinct from laser cutting or engraving.
These modules are not interchangeable in purpose, and xTool says modules from other xTool devices are not compatible with the M2. Check the xTool M2 FAQ and the M2 User Guide for the exact supported configuration before buying a module or planning a project.

xTool’s M2 User Guide lists the following machine dimensions, weight, and operating figures. Work area depends on the installed module.

The 40W area appears in the guide’s specifications, while xTool’s current FAQ and product materials prominently describe 10W and 20W options. Confirm that the configuration you intend to buy is available in your region and that its work area suits your project; the speed figure is a published maximum, not a promise of a particular job’s completion time.
What xTool says the diode modules can cut
xTool’s FAQ gives a specific one-pass capacity for basswood plywood: up to 8 mm with the 10W module and up to 10 mm with the 20W module. These are manufacturer-stated capacities, not independently verified results, and they should not be generalized to other woods or materials.

Actual suitability still depends on the sheet’s formulation and condition, and xTool’s stated maximum does not establish cut quality, speed, or reliability for every piece. For other materials, consult xTool’s M2 Material Cheat Sheet for Beginners and test only within the machine’s safety instructions.
Material compatibility and the reflective-metal warning
Material names alone do not determine whether a job is suitable. Coatings, pigments, adhesives, thickness, and surface finish can change how a material responds. In particular, xTool warns not to process highly reflective materials with the blue diode module, including mirror-finish metal, unoxidized aluminum, copper, and mirror-finish stainless steel. Reflected laser light can create a risk of injury or damage to the machine.

The infrared module is the documented option for engraving certain metals, but that does not mean every metal, coating, or object is appropriate. Check the material and module guidance for the exact workpiece rather than assuming that a material listed for one module is safe or effective with another.
Safety, air assist, and ventilation
xTool classifies the M2 as Class 1 under normal operation with its enclosure in place. The company says interlocks stop the laser if the protective cover is opened or the baseplate is removed. This classification describes the specified enclosed operating setup; it is not permission to defeat interlocks, process unsuitable materials, or ignore the current safety instructions. xTool’s M2 Safety First page cites ANSI Z136.1-2022, IEC 60825-1:2014, and EN 60825-1:2014/A11:2021 as reference standards.

- Use a flat protective material on the baseplate, as directed by the FAQ. Avoid flammable or highly reflective pads.
- The FAQ says the M2 has a built-in air pump, so a separate air-assist system is not necessary for the documented setup.
- xTool recommends its Desktop Air Purifier for regular laser use and AP2 for frequent cutting or materials with stronger odors. This is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not a comparative filtration test. Review the M2 product page and current safety guidance for the intended setup.
Software, positioning, and accessories
xTool’s FAQ identifies xTool Studio, USB or Wi-Fi communication, and Windows and macOS support. The M2 guide describes close-view and distance-view cameras for positioning. The guide and FAQ present camera resolution labels differently, so a megapixel figure is not included here; consult the current guide for the camera configuration you are considering.

Do not assume that an accessory fitting another xTool machine will work with the M2. Check the FAQ and the relevant accessory listing for confirmed M2 compatibility and package contents.

How to decide whether the M2 fits your work
- For cutting and general engraving: identify the material, finish, and thickness first, then compare them with the 10W or 20W blue diode guidance and the stated work area.
- For metal engraving: check whether the 3W infrared module supports the material and finish, and account for its 412.5 × 310 mm work area.
- For color printing: treat the CMYK inkjet module as a separate workflow from laser processing and verify its current compatibility and consumables.
- For camera-based placement: confirm that the close-view and distance-view workflow meets your positioning needs; do not choose by an unverified resolution number.
- For a multi-process craft workflow: xTool describes the M1 Ultra as combining laser cutting, blade cutting, pen drawing, and hot foiling, while the M2 focuses on laser processing and CMYK inkjet printing. Choose by the processes you need, not a blanket claim that one is better.
Before committing, verify the exact module, actual work area, workpiece height, material compatibility, ventilation plan, software support, compatible accessories, regional availability, and total package contents. The M2 FAQ, user guide, and product listing cover different parts of that check; the product page is dynamic, so current bundles and availability can change.
