Choose XRP Ledger when you want ledger-native issuance, trust-line or Multi-Purpose Token controls, and a payment-focused operating model. Choose Ethereum when broad smart-contract composability and the ERC-20 application interface are the priority. Neither choice proves that a stablecoin is backed, redeemable, compliant, liquid, or suitable for a particular real-world asset. Those outcomes come from the token implementation, issuer operations, legal structure, and distribution ecosystem.
The short answer: compare the implementation, not just the chain
XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum expose fundamentally different issuance models. XRPL provides fungible tokens as ledger features: established trust-line tokens and the newer Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) model. Ethereum does not have a built-in fungible-token asset type comparable to an XRPL trust line; issuers normally deploy a smart contract that follows the ERC-20 interface.
That distinction affects onboarding, permissions, upgrades, trading integrations, and operational risk. An ERC-20 contract can be recognized by many wallets and decentralized applications because it follows a common API, but the interface says little about the issuer’s powers. An XRPL token can use native ledger controls, yet the exact behavior depends on whether it is a trust-line token or an MPT and which protocol amendments are active.

What an XRPL token actually is
Trust-line tokens: the established XRPL model
XRPL trust-line tokens represent a bidirectional relationship between two accounts for a currency code. A holder creates or uses a trust line to indicate willingness to hold that issuer’s token. The model supports cross-currency payments and decentralized-exchange trading, but the issuer and holder settings must be configured deliberately.
Currency codes are not globally unique identities by themselves. Tokens with matching currency codes from different issuers can move through connected trust lines, so an issuer should make the issuing account, currency representation, and trust-line policy unambiguous in every integration. A ticker-like code is not proof that two assets are interchangeable.
Holder onboarding and authorization
Trust-line onboarding is an explicit holder action rather than an assumption that every account can automatically receive the asset. Issuers can use authorization-related settings where their operating model requires approval before a holder can transact. That can suit a permissioned stablecoin or a regulated distribution program, but it also adds a wallet and customer-support step.

Operational cautions
- Confirm the issuer account and currency code in every wallet, exchange, and payment integration.
- Test payments between authorized, unauthorized, and non-trust-line accounts.
- Model how freezes, clawbacks, or other administrative actions affect redemptions and customer balances where those controls are part of the chosen implementation.
- Do not treat native issuance as a substitute for reserve custody, reconciliation, or customer-service procedures.
Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs): newer controls with incomplete parity
MPTs use a unique issuance ID rather than relying solely on the trust-line currency-code relationship. Their properties are set per issuance. XRPL documentation describes settings that can include metadata, transferability, supply caps, transfer fees, authorization, freezing, and clawback behavior.

This design can make an MPT attractive for assets that need explicit, issuance-specific policy. However, the same documentation states that MPTs do not yet have full feature parity with trust-line tokens. Availability depends on protocol amendments, and a documented capability flag is not the same as a production-ready application feature.
Trading-readiness caveat
XRPL documentation currently says MPT decentralized-exchange trading is not implemented, even where a capability flag is described. If secondary-market trading is a launch requirement, verify the current amendment status and the actual venue support at the time of deployment. Do not promise DEX liquidity merely because the token type exposes configurable trading-related properties.

When an MPT may fit
An MPT may fit an issuance that benefits from a unique issuance identifier, per-asset metadata, explicit transferability settings, a supply cap, or issuer-controlled freeze and clawback options. It may be a poor fit when existing trust-line integrations, mature DEX workflows, or a specific wallet’s support are mandatory. The correct choice depends on the functions your distribution and redemption systems can actually exercise.
Ethereum and the ERC-20 interface
ERC-20 is an API, not a native asset type
ERC-20 is a smart-contract interface standard. Its basic functions include transferring tokens and approving a third party to spend tokens on a holder’s behalf. The purpose of the common interface is interoperability: applications such as wallets and decentralized exchanges can reuse tokens that implement the expected functions.
The proposal was created on November 19, 2015, and the interface is treated as a final standard. That maturity helps tooling, but it does not make every ERC-20 contract equivalent. Two contracts can expose the same basic functions while differing substantially in minting, burning, pausing, freezing, transfer restrictions, upgradeability, fees, and administrator powers.

What to inspect in a token contract
- Supply authority: identify who can mint, burn, or change supply and whether that authority can be transferred.
- Transfer controls: check allowlists, blocklists, jurisdiction restrictions, pause functions, and any transfer hooks.
- Administrative keys: determine whether a single key, a multisignature arrangement, or a governance system controls privileged actions.
- Upgrade mechanism: establish whether the implementation can change after deployment and how holders are notified.
- Spending approvals: explain allowance behavior and the risks of approving a third-party contract.
- Events and integrations: verify that wallets, exchanges, custodians, and reporting systems interpret the contract’s events and decimals correctly.
Ethereum smart contracts are programs deployed at addresses and run as programmed through user transactions. Ethereum documentation warns that interactions are irreversible by default. Test deployment, administrative recovery, and redemption paths before accepting customer funds; a mistaken transfer or irreversible privileged action may not be recoverable.

| Holder concern | XRPL trust-line token | XRPL MPT | Ethereum ERC-20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial acceptance | Holder generally opts in with a trust line | Issuance can require authorization, depending on settings | Contract behavior determines whether an address can receive or transfer |
| Policy location | Ledger relationship and issuer/account settings | Per-issuance properties plus account and amendment rules | Smart-contract code and related access-control systems |
| Transfer restrictions | Use supported issuer and trust-line controls | Use configured transferability and authorization controls | Must be explicitly coded; ERC-20 alone does not require restrictions |
| Recovery or clawback | Depends on the token’s configured native capabilities | Can include freeze/clawback options when supported and enabled | Only exists if the contract implements it and grants the required role |
| Application compatibility | Depends on trust-line or MPT support in each application | Support is still developing; check each integration | Broad baseline tooling, subject to contract-specific behavior |
Permissioning is therefore a separate design decision from issuance. A freely transferable token, a whitelist-only token, and a token redeemable only by verified customers can all be built around different combinations of these mechanisms.
Stablecoin economics: backing and redemption come first
A stablecoin is not made stable by its ticker, decimals, consensus mechanism, or token standard. XRPL’s issuer guidance describes stablecoins as tokens backed by assets outside the ledger and states that value comes from the promise that the token can be redeemed for a corresponding asset:
“While anyone can issue a token with any currency code in the XRP Ledger, stablecoin value comes from the promise that it can be redeemed for a corresponding asset.”
The same principle applies on Ethereum. ERC-20 supplies an interface, not evidence of reserves, a legal claim, redemption operations, attestations, audits, or compliance. The issuer must define what each token represents, where backing is held, who may redeem, how redemptions are priced and settled, and what happens during an incident.

Questions every issuer should answer
- What asset or assets back each unit, and how is the backing reconciled to outstanding supply?
- What contractual or legal right does a holder have to redemption?
- Which customers and jurisdictions can buy, hold, transfer, and redeem?
- How are reserves safeguarded, valued, and reported?
- Which events trigger a pause, freeze, clawback, or orderly wind-down?
- How are private keys, administrator roles, and emergency procedures protected?
Regulatory obligations vary by jurisdiction and by asset. A chain selection cannot resolve licensing, consumer-protection, money-transmission, securities, payments, commodities, tax, or data-protection questions for a specific launch. Obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice and align the token’s technical controls with the rights promised in its legal documents.
Tokenized real-world assets: where the differences matter
For a tokenized deposit, fund interest, invoice, commodity claim, or other off-chain asset, the key issue is the connection between the ledger token and the legal or operational system outside it. The chain records balances and transfers; it does not independently verify title, custody, valuation, or redemption.
XRPL-oriented design
Use trust lines when established XRPL payment and DEX behavior is central and holders can follow the opt-in model. Consider an MPT when per-issuance metadata, supply limits, transferability, authorization, or issuer controls are more important than mature trust-line compatibility. Confirm that every required function is active under the relevant amendments and supported by your target wallets and venues.
Ethereum-oriented design
Use an ERC-20 contract when your asset needs broad smart-contract composability or integration with applications that consume the standard interface. Treat the contract as a policy engine that must be audited and governed: the standard does not decide who may hold the asset, who can mint, or whether transfers are legally effective.
In either design, publish clear asset information, explain restrictions before purchase, maintain a reserve and redemption operation, and keep an auditable mapping between off-chain ownership records and on-chain balances where the legal structure requires it.

Infrastructure and operating requirements
XRPL infrastructure
XRPL guidance indicates that lighter use can rely on public servers, while serious operations may warrant owned infrastructure or an external provider. The appropriate choice depends on reliability, privacy, monitoring, transaction volume, support expectations, and recovery objectives. A hosted XRPL node service can reduce the burden of operating hardware, but the issuer remains responsible for provider due diligence, credentials, data handling, service continuity, and failover.
Ethereum infrastructure
This comparison does not establish a like-for-like Ethereum infrastructure cost or performance figure. An Ethereum issuer still needs dependable access to the network, transaction submission, event indexing, contract deployment and monitoring, key management, and recovery procedures. Select providers and architecture against the same workload and availability requirements used for XRPL; do not infer a cost ranking from the ledger names alone.
Implementation paths
XRPL issuance path
- Define the asset and legal promise. Specify the backing, redemption right, eligible jurisdictions, transfer policy, and supply policy.
- Select the token model. Compare a trust-line token with an MPT against required controls, wallet support, payment flows, and secondary-market needs.
- Verify amendment and integration status. Confirm that every needed MPT or trust-line capability is active and usable in the target environment.
- Configure issuer and holder controls. Set authorization, transferability, supply, fees, freeze, or clawback behavior only where the operating and legal policies support them.
- Test onboarding and failure cases. Exercise trust-line creation, rejected authorization, restricted transfers, redemption, key rotation, and incident response.
- Publish asset information. Make the issuer identity, currency or issuance identifier, backing description, redemption process, and restrictions easy for wallets and customers to verify.
- Operate and reconcile. Monitor balances, reserves, authorization events, administrative actions, and node or provider health continuously.
Ethereum issuance path
- Define the asset and legal promise. The same reserve, redemption, jurisdiction, and distribution decisions apply.
- Choose or design the contract policy. Decide supply, decimals, minting, burning, pausing, freezing, upgrades, transfer restrictions, and administrator roles before coding.
- Implement the ERC-20 interface. Ensure transfers, approvals, balances, total supply, and events behave as expected by target applications.
- Review privileged actions. Use appropriate key controls, role separation, transaction limits, monitoring, and documented emergency procedures.
- Test irreversible interactions. Test ordinary transfers, allowance changes, failed transactions, redemption, pause and unpause behavior, upgrades, and recovery on a non-production environment.
- Obtain independent code and operational review. Review the deployed bytecode, upgrade path, administrator addresses, and integration assumptions rather than relying on the token name.
- Publish and monitor. Make the contract address, policy, backing information, restrictions, and redemption route verifiable, then monitor events and reserves after launch.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“The standard makes it compliant.”
Neither a trust-line token, an MPT, nor an ERC-20 interface establishes legal compliance. Compliance depends on the asset, issuer, users, jurisdictions, contracts, controls, and ongoing operations.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

“The ticker identifies the asset.”
On XRPL, matching currency codes can exist for different issuers. On Ethereum, a symbol and name are contract metadata, not proof of authenticity. Always verify the issuer account or contract address through an authoritative distribution channel.
“A configurable feature is automatically available.”
MPT documentation distinguishes described settings from implemented functionality; DEX trading is a current example. Verify amendment activation and production support before committing to a user journey.
“ERC-20 contracts are interchangeable.”
The shared interface improves reuse, but custom minting, pausing, freezing, upgrades, fees, and access controls can change the risk and user experience. Inspect the actual code and administrator privileges.
“Public infrastructure is enough for every issuer.”
Public servers may suit lighter XRPL use, while serious operations may need owned or hosted infrastructure. Define availability, privacy, monitoring, and recovery requirements before selecting a service model.
Decision checklist
- Have you documented the asset’s legal claim, backing, redemption process, and jurisdictional scope?
- Do your target wallets, custodians, exchanges, and reporting systems support the exact token model?
- Can a holder understand how to obtain, hold, transfer, and redeem the asset?
- Are authorization, freeze, clawback, pause, mint, burn, and upgrade powers explicitly approved and governed?
- Have you tested rejected transfers, lost keys, compromised administrators, reserve shortfalls, and service outages?
- Is your secondary-market plan based on an actually implemented and supported venue rather than a capability flag?
- Can you reconcile on-chain supply and balances with off-chain reserves and customer records?
- Have you compared infrastructure against the same workload, service-level, privacy, and recovery requirements on both networks?
What the available evidence cannot establish
Technical documentation alone does not establish which network has greater current liquidity, deployment activity, adoption, transaction-cost advantage, throughput advantage, or tokenized-asset suitability for a particular geography. Those answers require a date-specific, workload-specific market and infrastructure comparison. Recheck XRPL amendment and application support before launch, and treat legal and market conditions as separate diligence workstreams.
