Short answer: XREAL One Pro glasses work directly with a source that outputs video through USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and supplies power. That includes listed USB-C iPhones from the iPhone 15 generation onward, compatible Android phones, USB-C laptops such as MacBooks and Windows PCs, Steam Deck and ROG Ally. PlayStation and Xbox consoles need a powered HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter, while Nintendo Switch requires the XREAL Hub with external power or a dock-and-adapter setup. The glasses have no internal battery, so every arrangement must provide power through the host device or an accessory.

The compatibility rule that matters

Do not judge compatibility by the device logo or by the presence of a USB-C socket alone. Direct connection requires two capabilities at the same time:

  • Video: USB-C DisplayPort (DP) Alt Mode output.
  • Power: at least 5 V/1 A supplied to the glasses.

XREAL’s connection guidance says a Type-C device that supports DP video can connect directly and that the glasses draw power from that device. A USB-C port used only for charging or ordinary data does not meet the video requirement. HDMI devices cannot plug straight into the glasses because the glasses expect a DisplayPort video signal and a separate power path.

Compatibility at a glance

Source device Direct connection? Additional hardware Important qualification
USB-C iPhone 15, 16 and 17 models Yes, for models listed by XREAL USB-C cable; a Hub is useful when charging during long sessions XREAL’s guide specifically excludes iPhone 16E from its direct-connection statement.
Lightning iPhone No Compatible HDMI/USB-C display adapter Check that the adapter supports external video and supplies the required power.
Android phone Only when the exact model supports DP Alt Mode Hub optional for simultaneous charging USB-C charging and data by themselves are not enough.
USB-C iPad or other tablet Yes when the port outputs DP video Hub optional Verify the exact model rather than assuming every USB-C tablet is compatible.
MacBook or Windows laptop with USB-C DP Yes USB-C cable; HDMI-to-USB-C adapter for HDMI-only computers The particular USB-C port must carry video.
Steam Deck or ROG Ally Yes Hub optional The handheld’s battery powers the glasses unless a powered hub is used.
Nintendo Switch Not as a simple direct USB-C connection XREAL Hub with external power, or a dock plus a powered HDMI adapter The Switch’s USB-C port is not a documented direct path for these glasses.
PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 or Xbox No direct connection Powered HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter The console outputs HDMI; the adapter must convert video and provide power.

Phones and tablets

USB-C iPhones

XREAL’s user guide lists USB-C iPhone models from the iPhone 15 generation onward for direct connection, including the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 families where listed. The same guide calls out the iPhone 16E as an exception to that direct statement, so do not treat every USB-C iPhone as automatically supported. Use a USB-C cable connected to the phone’s video-capable port and the glasses. For extended viewing, a Hub can add a charging path so the phone is not the only power source.

Lightning iPhones

Older iPhones with Lightning cannot provide the documented direct USB-C DP connection. They need a compatible display adapter that converts the phone’s output to a path the glasses can use. Confirm three specifications before buying: external-display support, the required HDMI or USB-C output, and power delivery to the glasses. A charge-and-sync Lightning cable alone will not create a video signal.

Android phones

Android compatibility is model-specific. The decisive specification is DP Alt Mode over USB-C, not Android version, processor brand or the fact that the port can charge another device. Look in the exact phone’s specifications or manufacturer support documentation for USB-C DisplayPort output. If the phone supports only USB-C charging and data, the glasses will not receive an image. A Hub is useful when you need to charge the phone while viewing, but it cannot add DP Alt Mode to a phone that lacks it.

iPads and Android tablets

A USB-C iPad or tablet can connect when its USB-C port supports DP video output. The same verification rule applies: identical-looking ports can have different capabilities on different models. Tablet classes listed in XREAL’s feature information can access the large-screen functions, while some advanced modes depend on the operating system and device class. Treat the model specification, rather than the connector shape, as the final authority.

Laptops and handheld PCs

MacBook and Windows laptops

MacBooks and Windows laptops with USB-C DP output can connect directly. Plug the glasses into a USB-C port identified for display output, then select the glasses as an external display in the operating system if they do not appear automatically. Some laptops have several USB-C ports with different functions; a charging-only port will not work.

If the computer has HDMI but no USB-C video output, use a powered HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter. The adapter must convert the HDMI signal and supply power, because HDMI itself does not provide the power arrangement the glasses require. An unpowered video converter may produce a black screen or fail to start the glasses.

Steam Deck and ROG Ally

Both handhelds can connect through a compatible USB-C DP port. In a direct setup, the handheld battery powers the glasses, so brightness, refresh rate and play time affect battery drain. A USB-C hub can add charging while the display is in use. Keep the cable and hub within their video and power ratings; a hub that offers charging but not DP pass-through will not solve the display connection.

Game-console compatibility

PlayStation and Xbox

PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox consoles output HDMI, whereas the glasses require DP video plus power. The documented solution is a powered HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter. Connect the console’s HDMI output to the adapter, connect the adapter’s USB-C display output to the glasses, and attach the adapter’s power input to a suitable USB power source. XREAL’s guide describes the arrangement as requiring an HDMI adapter and an HDMI-to-USB cable; its connection tutorial explains that the adapter must both convert HDMI to DP and provide power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse a passive HDMI-to-USB-C cable with an active converter. A passive cable changes the plug shape but cannot translate the signal or supply the necessary power. Choose an adapter that explicitly lists HDMI input, USB-C or DisplayPort output for glasses or portable monitors, and external power.

Nintendo Switch

The Switch cannot connect to the glasses as a simple direct USB-C device. Use the XREAL Hub with external power, or route the console through its dock and a powered HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter. The Hub or dock supplies the power path that a direct cable lacks. Because Switch hardware and accessories can differ by model, check the exact console and dock arrangement before assuming that a setup for one generation applies to another; Switch 2 behavior should be verified separately.

  • YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
  • ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
  • LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

For handheld play, make sure the Hub receives external power before starting the console output. If the console shows an image on a television but not in the glasses, check that the adapter is active, powered and configured for the console’s output mode.

What the glasses need from the power path

The glasses have no built-in battery. Every configuration therefore has a power budget:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A direct USB-C DP phone, tablet, laptop or handheld supplies power from its port.
  • A Hub can provide external power and, where supported, charge the source device while the glasses remain connected.
  • An HDMI console requires a powered converter because HDMI output alone does not satisfy the glasses’ DP-and-power requirement.

XREAL specifies a minimum host supply of 5 V/1 A for using a spatial large-screen display. If the source or adapter cannot meet that level, symptoms can include no image, intermittent disconnects or glasses that repeatedly restart. Use a certified USB-C DisplayPort cable for direct connections and a powered adapter for HDMI sources.

Display modes and device-class limits

Compatibility determines whether an image appears; it does not guarantee that every software feature is available on every source. XREAL’s feature information lists Anchor and Follow modes, electrochromic dimming, screen-size adjustment, 3D and Stabilizer across the relevant device classes. Ultrawide is more limited: it is listed for selected classes such as desktop-mode Android, iPad, Android tablets, Windows and MacBook rather than every compatible phone or console.

Refresh rate and image quality also depend on the source, cable and adapter. The current product information gives the glasses a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, a 120 Hz refresh rate and a 57-degree field of view; those are product capabilities, not a promise that every phone, console or adapter will drive all three at once. The source device’s output mode and the converter’s specifications remain the practical limits.

How to connect a compatible source

Direct USB-C DP device

  1. Confirm that the exact USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and at least 5 V/1 A power.
  2. Connect a certified USB-C DisplayPort cable between that port and the glasses.
  3. Unlock the phone, tablet, laptop or handheld and wait for external-display detection.
  4. Open the operating system’s display settings if you need to mirror, extend or change the resolution and refresh rate.
  5. For a long session, connect a compatible Hub and external charger if the source battery is falling quickly.

HDMI console or computer

  1. Choose an active HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter that explicitly supports external power.
  2. Connect the source HDMI output to the adapter’s HDMI input.
  3. Connect the adapter’s USB power input to a charger or powered USB port.
  4. Connect the adapter’s USB-C display output to the glasses.
  5. Set the console or computer to a display mode supported by the adapter, then verify that audio and video are present.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No image from a phone or laptop

  • Test another USB-C port; many computers reserve one port for charging or data only.
  • Confirm DP Alt Mode in the exact model specification.
  • Replace a charge-only cable with a USB-C cable rated for DisplayPort video.
  • Disconnect other USB-C accessories temporarily so the source can allocate enough power.

Console image appears briefly, then disappears

  • Check that the HDMI converter is powered independently.
  • Verify that it is an active HDMI-to-USB-C/DP converter, not a passive cable.
  • Reduce the console output mode if the adapter does not support the selected resolution or refresh rate.
  • Reconnect the power source before reconnecting HDMI and the glasses.

Switch does not display

  • Use the XREAL Hub with external power or the dock-plus-powered-adapter route.
  • Confirm that the console is seated in the dock when using the dock path.
  • Check every link in the chain: dock or Hub power, HDMI output, active converter and glasses cable.

The source battery drains rapidly

This is expected in a direct setup because the glasses draw power from the host. Lowering the source’s display workload can help, but the reliable fix for long sessions is a powered Hub or another accessory that supplies external power while maintaining DP video.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Identify the exact source model and its video protocol: USB-C DP Alt Mode or HDMI.
  • Check the port’s power capability, including the 5 V/1 A minimum guidance.
  • Use a certified USB-C DisplayPort cable for direct sources.
  • For HDMI sources, buy an active, powered HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter.
  • For Nintendo Switch, plan on the XREAL Hub with power or a dock and powered adapter.
  • Verify the adapter’s supported resolution, refresh rate and audio behavior before relying on it for gaming.
  • For phones and tablets, confirm the exact model; USB-C does not automatically mean video output.

Bottom line for each device category

Choose a direct USB-C connection when the source explicitly supports DP Alt Mode and can power the glasses. That is the simplest route for listed USB-C iPhones, compatible Android devices, USB-C iPads and tablets, MacBooks, Windows laptops, Steam Deck and ROG Ally. Choose a powered conversion setup for HDMI equipment: PlayStation, Xbox and HDMI-only computers need an active HDMI-to-USB-C/DisplayPort adapter, while Nintendo Switch needs the XREAL Hub with external power or a dock-based path. The connector’s shape is only the starting point; video protocol and power delivery decide whether the system works.
