Update an XR18 with Behringer’s X AIR EDIT application, and select the firmware file that matches the mixer’s hardware revision. XR18 V1 and V2 files are not interchangeable: Behringer provides separate files for the two revisions starting with firmware 1.20.
Before you update: identify your XR18 revision
Check the connected mixer’s hardware version in X AIR EDIT before choosing a firmware file. Behringer says the application identifies the hardware version and indicates when the selected update file is incorrect. Use that information to match the download to your mixer: XR18 V1 hardware takes the V1 file, and XR18 V2 hardware takes the V2 file. Do not cross-flash them. Behringer explains that the split, introduced with firmware 1.20, reflects alternative chipsets in the two hardware versions. Behringer’s XR18 product page is the official place to check the current software and firmware downloads; follow the listing for your revision rather than relying on an old copy or an assumed version number.
How to update XR18 firmware
- Open the official XR18 downloads. On Behringer’s XR18 product support page, check the available firmware and software packages. The live listing is the reference for current availability and version.
- Install or open X AIR EDIT. Behringer identifies X AIR EDIT as the application used for X AIR firmware updates. The manufacturer’s X AIR EDIT V1.8 release document, dated June 15, 2023, confirms that role; it does not establish that V1.8 is the latest release today. Consult Behringer’s software downloads for the current package and its instructions.
- Connect to the mixer and confirm its hardware revision. The XR18 supports wireless connections and wired LAN. Once connected in X AIR EDIT, use the hardware version the application reports to choose the matching update file.
- Select the matching firmware file and follow the current prompts. X AIR EDIT can flag an incorrect file. Follow the utility’s on-screen instructions and any instructions included with the current download. Behringer’s available release information does not establish a universal current click-by-click sequence, so do not rely on guessed menu names or button combinations.
- Wait for the utility to complete the update. Use the completion status and instructions shown by X AIR EDIT; do not interrupt the process based on an assumed duration or an unverified procedure.
Choose a connection that suits your setup
Behringer documents both wireless app connections and wired Ethernet for the XR18. The product page describes connecting a computer through the built-in Ethernet LAN port with a Cat 5 cable. These are supported connection options; the cited documentation does not say Ethernet is mandatory for firmware updates or that either connection is universally safer.
| Connection | What Behringer documents | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Wireless app connection; the XR18 supports Access Point and Wi-Fi Client modes. | Convenient when the wireless link is stable and the computer or control device is already connected appropriately. |
| Wired Ethernet | A computer can connect through the built-in Ethernet LAN port using Cat 5 cable. | Useful when a wired connection fits the setup. You need a suitable cable if you do not already have one. |
Choose the available connection that lets X AIR EDIT communicate reliably with the mixer. The official material cited here does not rank the options for update reliability.

If the control app warns about unsupported firmware
An unsupported-firmware warning means you should check Behringer’s current XR18 downloads and confirm the mixer’s V1 or V2 hardware revision before proceeding. The warning alone does not identify a specific fault or guarantee that a particular firmware update will improve performance. The official XR18/X18 Quick Start Guide notes that a control app may warn when mixer firmware is unsupported and recommends updating to the latest version. Check the current official instructions and downloads, then use X AIR EDIT and the file matching the reported hardware version.
What to verify after the update
Use X AIR EDIT and the control app to confirm that they connect to the mixer and report compatible firmware. If an app still warns that the firmware is unsupported, recheck the selected hardware revision and the current official download instructions instead of assuming the warning identifies a particular defect.
