xMEMS’ µCooling chips are miniature, solid-state airflow devices designed to move heat away from smartphone hotspots without conventional fan blades. The company says its products are shipping for next-generation smartphone designs, but no reviewed source names a retail handset that contains one, and no independent smartphone test shows how much cooler or faster a phone becomes. µCooling is therefore a promising thermal-management component—not a proven permanent cure for overheating.

What xMEMS µCooling actually is

µCooling uses piezoMEMS structures: microscopic silicon membranes vibrate at ultrasonic frequencies and generate directed airflow. xMEMS describes the architecture as all-silicon and manufactured with semiconductor processes. For the XMC-2400, technical reporting from IEEE Spectrum describes piezoelectric actuation combined with an air chamber and valve arrangement.

The component is roughly 1 millimeter thick, according to xMEMS. Unlike a conventional miniature fan, it has no rotating blades. “Silent” should still be treated as a design goal rather than a measured guarantee for every phone, because the reviewed material does not provide independent acoustic results in a smartphone enclosure.

Why a phone might use active micro-cooling

Most phones manage heat passively. Graphite sheets and vapor chambers spread heat through the chassis so it can reach larger surfaces. µCooling is intended to add active, localized airflow near a hotspot such as a processor, modem or other high-power component.

NEVEIKA Plug-in Phone Cooler, Cellphone Radiator with Dual Semi-Conductor Cooling Chip, Mobile Phones with a Width of 6 to 7.5cm for Tiktok Live Streaming, Outdoor Vlog, Mobile Gaming.
  • Linear damping telescopic clip: easy to adjust, pay attention! Suitable for all types of mobile phones with a width of "6 to 7.5 centimeters". NEVEIKIA mobile phone cooling can cool down when connected to a power source.(Attention: It is best to remove the phone case when using it for a better experience!)
  • Quick cooling: Dual engine, cooling principle is the same as a refrigerator, not ordinary fan cooling. It can cool your phone in "3 to 5 seconds", avoiding overheating and ensuring a stable live streaming or gaming experience.
  • Dual power supply design: supports powering the radiator through a mobile phone, and can also be connected to an external power source for use; When connected to an external power source, it can provide stable power to both the radiator and the phone, avoiding interruption of heat dissipation due to insufficient power during long-term use and ensuring continuous and stable heat dissipation performance.
  • Silent engine cooling: The fan with dual silent design can effectively dissipate air from all directions, providing stronger cooling effect without interfering with your games or Vlog programs.
  • Expanded cooling area: Approximately 2.82x1.29 inches of extreme thermal conductivity cooling area, covering the CPU and battery module, protecting your phone from blackening or sudden shutdown.

That distinction matters: a micro-cooler does not automatically replace a vapor chamber or graphite spreader. Its effectiveness would depend on the phone’s internal air path, hotspot location, workload, component placement, available power and overall thermal design. A sealed handset would also need an airflow strategy that does not compromise dust and water resistance.

XMC-4800: the smartphone-targeted specification

The current xMEMS product page lists the XMC-4800 for both smartphones and data-center solid-state drives. These are manufacturer specifications for that component, not independent measurements of a shipping phone.

Is a consumer smartphone using the chip yet?

In an August 18, 2026 article, xMEMS said it was shipping µCooling products for next-generation smartphone designs. The statement establishes component shipments and design activity, not a named retail handset. The current product page identifies smartphones as an application but likewise does not identify an OEM or consumer model.

That leaves three separate milestones that should not be conflated:

  • Component availability: xMEMS can supply a cooling device to qualified customers.
  • Design-in: a phone maker evaluates or integrates the device into a product design.
  • Retail availability: a named handset reaches consumers with the component confirmed inside.

The reviewed sources document the first two in general terms, but not the third.

Do not transfer the XMC-1200 temperature claim to phones

xMEMS announced the XMC-1200 on July 21, 2026, primarily for smart glasses and other wearables. The company reported a reduction of up to 10°C at a 1 W thermal load and said engineering samples were available to qualified customers.

That demonstration belongs to the XMC-1200 wearable context. It is not a smartphone result, and it is not a specification for the smartphone-listed XMC-4800. Applying the 10°C figure to a phone would overstate the evidence.

How µCooling compares with other phone-cooling approaches

Approach Where heat is handled Integration considerations Evidence in the reviewed material
Graphite sheets and vapor chambers Spread heat across a larger area for passive dissipation Consume internal volume but require no active power Established passive methods; no same-phone comparison with µCooling was provided
µCooling chip Moves air near a targeted hotspot About 1 mm thick for the architecture; needs airflow routing and electrical power xMEMS specifications and company demonstrations; no independent smartphone outcome test
External clip-on cooler Removes heat from the phone’s exterior Separate accessory, added bulk and dependence on an external attachment IEEE Spectrum reports use among some niche gaming phones

No reviewed source supplies a controlled test comparing these approaches on the same handset and workload. Important practical trade-offs include power draw, noise and vibration, sealing, available space, hotspot targeting and the maturity of independent evidence.

What “fix overheating forever” gets wrong

Overheating has multiple causes: sustained processor load, cellular or wireless-radio activity, high ambient temperature, charging, battery aging and software behavior. A device that moves air near one component cannot eliminate every source of heat. It also cannot make a phone immune to thermal limits, which protect the battery and silicon.

The available evidence supports describing µCooling as a potential way to improve localized thermal management. It does not establish a permanent, universal fix, a specific temperature reduction in smartphones or a guaranteed increase in sustained performance.

What phone buyers can do today

There is no confirmed retail handset identified in the reviewed material that lets consumers verify an internal xMEMS cooler. Some niche gaming phones use external cooling attachments, as IEEE Spectrum has reported, but those accessories are a separate category and do not demonstrate the availability or performance of an embedded µCooling chip.

For now, treat an advertised µCooling handset as a claim requiring model-specific confirmation: look for a named phone, an explicit component listing and independent testing under a defined workload. Until those details appear, the most accurate description is that xMEMS is supplying technology for prospective smartphone designs rather than delivering a proven “forever” solution.
