No. XLRI’s HRM programme does not guarantee better returns than Business Management (BM). XLRI publishes strong placement results for the two programmes together, but the current official material does not provide a separate, audited HRM-versus-BM salary table. Choose HRM for a deliberate career in human-resources strategy and BM for broader management options; calculate your own payback from the complete cost and the offer you can realistically secure.
What XLRI’s two-year programmes cost
XLRI’s flagship two-year residential programmes are officially titled PGDM(HRM) and PGDM(BM), although they are commonly described as MBA-equivalent courses. The current admissions overview lists a fee of ₹15.25 lakh per annum for the flagship PGDM programmes. The 2026 prospectus gives an approximately similar figure of ₹15.3 lakh per annum and states that fees can be revised.

Therefore, treating ₹30.5–30.6 lakh as the total investment understates the decision. A student who leaves a job must also count two years of foregone earnings, plus loan interest if the fee is financed.

What the latest placement figures actually show
XLRI’s latest official placement announcement for the 2024–26 graduating class reports a combined median salary of ₹29 lakh per annum for BM and HRM. It also reports average salaries of ₹49.2 lakh for the top 10th percentile and ₹44.18 lakh for the top 25th percentile.

XLRI says its placement data are audited under the Indian Placement Reporting Standards and include measures such as mean and median starting salary, batch percentage and job details. Auditing improves confidence in the reported definitions, but it does not turn a cohort median into an individual guarantee or reveal a programme split that has not been published.
Internship evidence and HR career paths
The 2025–27 summer placement process covered 583 students and produced 584 offers from 114 organisations. XLRI reported an average stipend of ₹1.6 lakh per month, a median stipend of ₹1.55 lakh per month and a highest stipend of ₹3.5 lakh per month. These are internship figures, not final-placement salaries.

Its published recruiter list for HR-related hiring includes Accenture TAP, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, Citi, Godrej, HUL, ITC, Mahindra, Mondelez, Nestlé, P&G, PepsiCo, Reckitt, Reliance, Sun Pharma, TAS, Vedanta and Zeiss. The list demonstrates the range of organisations participating; it does not indicate that every student receives an offer from one of them.

Does HRM have better ROI than BM?
The available evidence cannot establish an HRM ROI winner. The headline salary is pooled across both programmes, while the fee is broadly common to the flagship courses. Without current programme-separated medians, means, offer distributions and batch coverage, dividing ₹30 lakh by ₹29 lakh would be a misleading calculation.

HRM is financially sensible when you genuinely want HR work and are likely to use the specialist training. BM is financially sensible when the value of optionality, or a target in a non-HR function, outweighs the benefit of early specialisation. Neither choice is supported by the published data as a guaranteed higher-return route.
How to model your own XLRI payback
- Set the full cash cost. Start with the official two-year academic-fee estimate, then add the actual hostel and mess quote, living costs, travel, insurance, deposits and any applicable taxes.
- Add foregone earnings. Include the after-tax income you would have earned during the two-year residential programme. For a student without an existing salary, this input can be zero, but state that assumption.
- Add financing cost. Use the sanctioned loan amount, disbursement schedule, interest rate, moratorium treatment and repayment term. Interest during study can materially increase the amount to recover.
- Use take-home pay, not just CTC. Remove taxes, employee contributions, variable-pay uncertainty and one-time components from the offer you are evaluating.
- Calculate a payback period. A transparent approximation is
payback years = total education cost and foregone income ÷ annual after-tax income attributable to the new qualification. Define what you count as attributable income; otherwise the result will look more precise than it is. - Stress-test three outcomes. Model a conservative offer, your realistic target and an upside offer. Also test a delayed placement or a period of unemployment, because a cohort median does not describe every individual result.
Keep tuition, living costs, foregone salary and interest as separate lines. This makes it clear whether the decision works because of the programme itself or because an optimistic salary assumption hides the true cost.

Admissions, seats and timing
Indian candidates apply to both PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM) through XAT. XLRI lists 600 seats combined for the two flagship programmes and describes both as two-year residential courses.

Applicants making a fee decision should request the complete 2027–29 fee schedule and the latest placement report before committing, rather than relying only on the overview figures.

What to verify before accepting an offer
- Ask for BM and HRM medians, means, percentile bands and batch coverage shown separately.
- Confirm whether reported salaries are fixed pay, total CTC, or a mixture containing variable and one-time components.
- Request the current hostel, mess, deposit and other compulsory-charge schedule.
- Check the placement report’s definition of the graduating batch and the percentage receiving offers.
- Compare your own loan repayment with conservative take-home salary, not the top-percentile averages.
- Choose HRM only if the named HR roles match your intended work; choose BM if broader functional mobility is the priority.
