For an eligible home with a working cable outlet, setting up Xfinity Internet is usually straightforward: connect the gateway, power it on, then activate it in the Xfinity app. The main potential snag is not the wiring but whether the kit, account, and outlet are ready. Xfinity estimates app activation at about 20 minutes, but that is an estimate—not a guaranteed completion time.
How hard is Xfinity self-install?
Most of the work is connecting the supplied equipment and following the app’s prompts. Xfinity says no tools are needed to connect devices. Setup is most likely to be simple when your address qualifies for a Getting Started Kit, you have an active cable outlet where you want the gateway, and you can sign in to your Xfinity account.
The provider’s activation instructions estimate about 20 minutes; its new-customer guide also says activation may take a few minutes. Those are provider estimates, not independent measurements or a promise that every installation will finish within that time. An inactive outlet or an account issue can add steps.
Check whether your home qualifies
Xfinity’s Getting Started Kit FAQ says the kit path is intended for homes that currently have or previously had Xfinity service, have working cable and electrical outlets at the planned equipment location, need fewer than four devices installed, and are within a kit service area. Xfinity Home Security cannot be ordered or transferred through this kit path. Confirm eligibility for your specific address and order before relying on self-install.

The general instructions cannot confirm whether a particular outlet is active or whether an account is provisioned and ready. The Xfinity app can check the connection during activation; if one outlet does not work, Xfinity recommends trying another available outlet.
What comes in the Internet kit
Xfinity lists a leased WiFi Gateway, power cord, and coaxial cable in the standard Internet kit, with an exception for fiber-to-the-unit installations. The gateway provides WiFi, so a separate router is not required when using the supplied gateway. Most customers should not need to buy a coax cable; consider a replacement or longer RG6 coax cable only if the supplied cable is missing, damaged, or too short.

Set up and activate the gateway
- Connect the coax. Attach one end of the coax cable to the cable wall outlet and the other to the gateway.
- Power on the gateway. Plug its power cord into an electrical outlet. Wait for the gateway lights to stop blinking before proceeding, as Xfinity advises in its new-customer guide.
- Start activation in the app. Open the Xfinity app, sign in with your Xfinity ID, and follow the activation prompts. The app checks the connection and tells you if more action is needed.
- Set up WiFi. Set or confirm your WiFi network name and password, then connect your devices. Xfinity says you can reuse your previous network name and password to avoid reconnecting devices one at a time.
- Choose a suitable location. Xfinity recommends avoiding cramped spaces and placing the gateway a few feet above the floor to help WiFi coverage.
When can you activate?
For most orders, Xfinity says activation can take place any time from the day the equipment arrives through up to seven days afterward. This is an activation window, not a statement of how long setup takes. If your order includes Xfinity Voice with a ported phone number, activation must happen on the Firm Order Commitment date.
Rank #3
- Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.
If activation does not work
- Check the connections. Make sure the coax is firmly attached at both ends and the gateway is plugged into power.
- Restart the gateway. Unplug it for 30 seconds, then reconnect it and allow it to start up.
- Try another outlet. If the app indicates the cable outlet is not active, try another available cable outlet in the home.
- Follow the app’s connection check. Use its prompts to identify any additional action needed.
- Use Xfinity’s self-install help or support options. If the gateway still cannot activate, contact Xfinity for help with the account, address, or outlet. The general instructions do not establish that a technician is always required; that depends on the specific issue.
What changes with an X1 TV kit?
If your X1 kit includes a gateway, Xfinity recommends activating the wireless gateway first, then the primary TV box, and finally any additional TV boxes. If you already have a gateway or ordered video service only, connect and activate the X1 equipment according to the provider’s instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-install or professional installation?
Self-install is a practical choice when your home qualifies, the required outlets are present and working, and you are comfortable following the app. A provider appointment may be more appropriate if the outlet is inactive, the address or account needs intervention, or the app cannot complete activation. Xfinity describes its kit as convenient and less costly than professional installation, but the cited FAQ does not state a dollar amount. Check the terms for your order to confirm any applicable fees and whether an appointment is available or needed.
