Not necessarily. Whether you must return an Xfinity Prepaid modem or gateway depends on whether Xfinity identifies that specific device as Comcast-provided equipment or as equipment you purchased. The kit’s purchase channel also affects where to ask about a return or refund. Check your receipt and prepaid account, then confirm the device’s status and return route with Xfinity Prepaid before giving it away or recycling it.
First, find out whether the gateway is yours or Comcast’s
Xfinity Prepaid’s Customer Agreement distinguishes customer-purchased equipment from XFINITY Equipment provided by Comcast or other third parties. It says equipment other than inside wiring or equipment purchased by the customer belongs to the company or third parties, and that customers are responsible for returning XFINITY Equipment in undamaged condition.
The prepaid product page describes a refurbished WiFi modem as “included with kit,” but that wording alone does not establish the ownership or return status of the gateway on a particular account. Look at the receipt and the equipment shown in your prepaid account. If they do not make the status clear, contact Xfinity Prepaid support and ask them to confirm the device using its serial number.
Use the return route that matches where you got the kit
Xfinity Prepaid separates its guidance by purchase channel. The prepaid product page directs customers who received a kit from a participating retailer to that retailer’s return or refund policy. For a kit received from Xfinity, it points customers to Xfinity Prepaid’s return and refund information. Check the receipt and follow the instructions for your specific kit rather than assuming the two routes are interchangeable.

How to return a gateway Xfinity says it needs back
- Confirm the device and instructions. Check the prepaid account and receipt, and get Xfinity Prepaid to confirm whether the gateway is returnable and which options apply to it.
- Follow the prepaid account’s return directions. Xfinity Prepaid’s general support page says Comcast equipment that needs to be returned, or is no longer needed, can be dropped off at a Customer Service Center or Xfinity Store. Use the account-specific instructions if they give a particular location or process.
- If the account offers an online return, keep its proof. Xfinity’s general equipment return guidance describes store drop-off and UPS prepaid shipping, and says the Digital Return Center remains available after disconnection. For a UPS return, keep the tracking-number portion as your receipt. Xfinity says it can take up to two weeks for a return to appear on the account. These are general Xfinity instructions; use them only if they are among the options shown for your prepaid gateway.
- Keep the device and receipt until the matter is settled. Do not discard or give away equipment while its ownership or return status is unresolved.
A return does not automatically mean a refund
Xfinity’s 30-day money-back guarantee excludes Xfinity Prepaid service, gateways, WiFi modems, Starter Kits, and Modem Kits. A kit purchased from a participating retailer is subject to that retailer’s return or refund policy. Returning a gateway therefore does not, by itself, establish that you qualify for a refund of the kit price.
Do not treat the general 30-day equipment language as a prepaid deadline
Xfinity’s general disconnected-account refund guidance says unreturned rented equipment may result in charges after 30 days, which could reduce or eliminate an eligible refund. That guidance concerns rented equipment generally; it does not establish a universal 30-day deadline for every Xfinity Prepaid gateway or kit. Ask Xfinity Prepaid what applies to your device and account.
