Yes. Xfinity Pause can stop a selected device, or devices assigned to a person’s profile, from accessing the internet through your home Xfinity WiFi. It does not disable the device or block every way it can get online: cellular data, public hotspots, other WiFi networks, and local connections such as printing are outside its reach. Xfinity also notes that activity already in progress may continue briefly after a pause.
What Xfinity Pause controls
Pause is a home-network access control, managed in the Xfinity app through device and Family Settings. You can pause one device or devices assigned to a person. Family Settings also supports scheduled pauses and daily screen-time limits. Some parental-control options may be available through the Gateway Admin Tool, depending on the gateway. See Xfinity’s parental-control setup guidance.
The distinction is the network path: Pause restricts access over your Xfinity home WiFi, not the device’s ability to connect by another route. A paused phone can still use cellular data, for example, and a device may retain local-network access such as printing.

Choose the right kind of pause
| Control | What it affects | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Device pause | The selected device on home WiFi | Pause or resume that device in the Xfinity app. |
| Person-level pause | Devices assigned to a person | Pause the profile to affect its assigned devices. |
| Scheduled pause | Assigned devices during set times | Choose days and start and end times in that person’s settings. |
| Screen-time limit | Assigned devices’ daily online time | Set weekday and weekend allowances; automatic pause must be enabled to pause devices when the limit is reached. |
Family Settings requires an Xfinity ID with permission to manage WiFi settings and devices. Devices must be assigned to a person for profile schedules and limits to apply. Primary and Manager users generally have broader management access than Members; availability and options can also vary by gateway and app experience. Xfinity describes these requirements in its Family Settings guide and user and device management guide.

How to pause or resume a device
- Open the Xfinity app. Select the device you want to manage, or choose the person whose assigned devices you want to control.
- Choose the pause control. Depending on the app flow, you may be able to choose a duration or pause until you resume it manually. App labels and navigation can vary.
- Resume access when needed. Select Unpause for a paused device or profile. If a schedule caused the pause, Xfinity documents a Wake Up option that restores access until the next scheduled pause.
For a pause that applies to only one device on a schedule, assign only that device to a person, then schedule the pause for that profile. To make a schedule, open the person’s settings, choose Schedule a pause, select the schedule type, days, and start and end times, then save. Xfinity says schedules cannot overlap and requires at least one minute between one schedule’s end and another’s start. See the Family Settings instructions and FAQs.
How screen-time limits differ from a pause
A screen-time limit sets a daily online-time allowance, with separate weekday and weekend settings. Reaching the allowance does not itself guarantee a pause: enable automatic pause if you want assigned devices paused for the rest of that day. Xfinity notes that background network activity, including app updates, may count as active time. Its Family Settings FAQ explains the limits and setup.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Why a paused device may still seem connected
- It is using another connection. Cellular data, a public Xfinity hotspot, another WiFi network, and local connections such as printing are not blocked by a home WiFi pause. Xfinity outlines these limits in its xFi FAQs.
- An existing activity has not ended yet. Xfinity says activity already in progress may continue for a time after pausing; the pause is not necessarily an immediate stop to every session.
- You paused the wrong device entry. Device names can be manufacturer hostnames, MAC addresses, or nicknames. Check the device details and look for duplicate or inactive entries before changing another device’s settings.
- A different rule is keeping it paused. Check for an active schedule, another pause, or a screen-time rule if access does not return when expected. Use Unpause or, for a scheduled pause, Wake Up where available.
- The device is not assigned to the profile you changed. Profile schedules and limits apply to devices assigned to that person while they use the home WiFi.
- The device uses a separate network. Some Xfinity Home equipment may use a separate secure network and may not appear in the regular WiFi device list.
These device-identification and connection caveats are covered in Xfinity’s xFi FAQs and Family Settings FAQs.

Troubleshoot a pause that is not taking effect
- Check the connection. Confirm the device is on your Xfinity home WiFi, not cellular data, a hotspot, or another WiFi network.
- Verify the device entry. In the app, inspect the device details and confirm you selected the right entry. Check for duplicates or stale entries, and verify the device is assigned to the intended person if you are using profile controls.
- Review all active rules. Check the device and the person’s settings for a manual pause, schedule, or daily limit. Use Unpause or Wake Up as appropriate.
- Check your account and equipment. If a control is missing, make sure the signed-in Xfinity ID has permission to manage WiFi settings and that your gateway and app experience support the feature.
- Try device-specific recovery. If the app control itself is unresponsive, Xfinity suggests checking the manufacturer’s app, restarting the Xfinity app, and unlinking and relinking a linked device when applicable. See Xfinity’s xFi troubleshooting guidance.
